I describe how I've build my automatic chicken feeder that works with an timer. It's a electric motor that drives a worm gear which can deliver grains on demand. The project is under 100$ (probably less if you have already some of the parts) and is easy to build. The biggest limitation is that you need a 3D printer to build some of the parts.
