Hah! Do I detect some classic Golden Age Fallacy? Have you heard the Sex Pistols' Greatest Rock 'n' Roll Swindle album? Bad Religion (Greg Graffin who sings half the vocals on this track) and NoFX both have done more than their fair share of intelligent and powerful social commentary. You can't begrudge them some fun every once in a while (particular Graffin who does not fsck around).

Yes, if you define intelligent as making an accurate & powerful statement about the state of their world. Their world in England in the 70s was a grim, desperate place. Unemployment was severely high & it was a relatively hopeless situation to be a lower class, poor, underprivileged young man in a country that was increasingly indifferent to the people's hardships & suffering. And thing only got worse in the 80s. I'd say that the emotion & energy that they expressed was a work of intelligence.
