I live in the Texas Panhandle which is part of the grasslands...there are really no trees here. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the great plains. I thing research is needed to figure out how to raise cattle on LESS land so that people can still have beef but more of the land can be opened up by cutting down fences. Also, I've thought for a very long time that Ostriches should be raised in the Texas Panhandle. They provide a LOT of red meat that's better for you than beef and they take up less land. They survive well in grass lands.

Exactly! From 23:38 to 23:48, 'must adapt to climate,' and, 'nature is not something you can be the boss of...nature is the boss of you!'

Do we not all realize that the world goes through extreme changes, on its on, without any interference or assistance, from us? It is folly, and arrogance for us to believe, even for a moment, that we can control what our beautiful Earth does.

Thank you to Hampton Sides for setting out, and completing, this five-year odyssey to research, write, visit locations, and finally tell the story of, to me an Australian, the greatest sea-faring captain and navigator the World has seen, and given the way we travel these days, the greatest navigator the World will ever see. I must admit to knowing little, if anything of this Third Voyage, other than seeing it as lines on a map. Australia, like the United States and Canada, is fortunate to have been part of the British Empire, especially during the 18th century as they brought with them, among other things, the language, system of Government, and laws, and scientific innovations and medical advancement. It was individuals, many who were escaping difficult living conditions in Europe during the 19th Century that, on the ground seeking profit and expansion in the lands they moved to (Australia, USA and Canada) that undid a lot of the initial goodwill that great seafarers like Cook and Bouganville and Nicholas Baudin (the later two French) left on their encounters with the local populations and land. France could have had a similar high place in history as at that time they had great scientific minds and the support of their monarchy. The 1789 French Revolution and subsequent rise of Napolean set in place the destruction of France internally, as well as created a system of colonisation based on the bayonet and gun, instead of co-operation on shared principals, and that of trade. American innovation As an Australian I, together with all Australians, read, see and enjoy the benefits the endeavour, ingenuity, often self-sacrifice, co-operation with, and learning from, that the Americans and Canadians have provided to us. At the simplest level I think of the work of American engineering that produced, refined, and improved much of the farm equipment we use on broad -acre farming here in Australia. Tractors with wheels taller than me, attachments and 108' (30+ metre boom attachments) for spraying, ploughing, seeding etc. ABC Radio National-Nightlife with David Maher Tuesday 10-11 PM Tuesday 30 July 2024-Interview with Hampton I only became aware of the existence of both Hampton Sides and his book on Cook's Third Voyage, because on Tuesday 30 July he did an interview with our ABC Radio National Nightline presenter, David Maher. I was so impressed with both the presenter and this work that I came across this presentation he did with the Explorers Club of New York in May. Thank you to the Explorers Club for hosting Hampton, and bringing both his, as well as the story of Cook's Third Voyage to a world-wide audience.

Poor Captain Cook gets mistaken by some of our dumb Aussies thinking he came out with the First fleet in 1788. I know an American girl who was working in Hawaii who accused him of being a coloniser and murderer. I soon explained to her that she was factually incorrect. He was the greatest explorer ever.

Yes agree, if people want to be picky, greatest navigator and naval explorer. One thing that I failed to acknowledge was the invention of the chronometer by, I think, a father and son combination, the Harrison's (?), a few years earlier. I think as part of Cook's First Voyage (1768-1771) which I understand had several aims including transitioning the path of Venus in Tahiti and finding out if there was a Great South Land, was using this relatively new invention of the chronometer. It should also be added that he provided citrus fruits to his crew as a means of preventing scurvy among his crew. I think it is the English author, Simon Winchester, who wrote a book on the Harrison's and their own 20-year search, trial and testing, that lead to the invention of the chronometer.

Can someone explain how these early hominids were climbing down into these pitch black places? For modern men with all many of equipment, it seems incredibly difficult. Were they using torches? How long would those last before burning out? And what about the smoke? What compelled them to venture so deep inside? It is truly remarkable.

I assume that they would have been a tribe of hunter gathers if this was so then this cave would possibly have been near their main camp, and groups would have moved around and returned. It could be that for those who died away they would have been returned and due to time and distance they might have considered that the face or head represented that person's memory and would have been returned to "the Ancestors Place". In human societies infant mortality was a constant and I expect that they would have also experienced this, placing these children with grandma in the "Place of the Ancestors" is a question best answered by anthropologists as to how this is handled in human hunter gathering groups.
