Pennine Way 2022 Day 18 THE END IS NEAR
Welcome to our channel.
An overweight Scous gas engineer and a short-legged German sound editor we are a couple of unlikely hiking and camping enthusiasts, out of shape and on the wrong side of 50. Since 2016 we have been tackling some of the UK's shorter long distance trails and when those failed to kill us, we went a bit bigger and tried for a 2019 through-hike of the Pacific Crest Trail,
Our aim is to hike until we can hike no more. We are no experts in anything and we don't take ourselves too seriously, we are just hiking because we enjoy it and we film our adventures to share that enjoyment and some of the gear and hiking tips and tricks we pick up along the way.
We hope you come along...

    how did you find the osprey weight and load wise compared to the other pack - know about the pack failure but worried my osprey may be too heavy.

    • @liverpoolhikers
      @liverpoolhikers Год назад

      The thing with the Osprey is that while it is indeed a heavier pack it carries the weight very well. So once it's up on your shoulders it almost doesn't matter how much it weighs anymore. Getting it onto your shoulders though ... you'll notice the difference then! Brian no longer uses the pack as an issue with the hipbelt led us into the Kafka-esque world of Osprey Customer Service in the UK, which is (or at least was back then) truly attrocious! Weeks of being send from department to department only to end up where we started led to a solution that cost a lot of money and did bugger all to fix the problem. Especially disappointing as Osprey Customer Service has a superb reputation in other parts of the world :-(. What alternatives to the Osprey are you considering for your hike?

  • @residentweavil233
    @residentweavil233 Год назад

    shocking to see the pack failure. not even tough tape would help that since tis load bearing. hoping the osprey will cope though it may be a heavier pack than i want for this distance.

    • @liverpoolhikers
      @liverpoolhikers Год назад

      Yeah, we were not best pleased with that one! It appears to have been a common enough issue for Gossamer Gear to start shipping the packs with little rubber stoppers for those poles since then!

  • @residentweavil233
    @residentweavil233 Год назад

    geez that looked busy at 5 min mark lol someone said consider doing the c2c in reverse :), what tent did you use and what was your pack weight approx?

    • @liverpoolhikers
      @liverpoolhikers Год назад

      Hello welcome to our channel and thank you for watching :). We used the Trekkertent Drift back then, a hiking pole tent made in Scotland. They made us a 3-man version as we needed some extra room due to a shoulder issue that forced Brian to kind of roll in and out of the tent. Ordinarily their 2 person option would have been just fine. Our packweight was (and largely still is) around 10kg / 22lb baseweight. Ultralight we are not ... The c2c is a pretty busy trail during summer, but the majority are b&b hikers, so while there were plenty of people on the trail we didn't have any issues finding camp spots. I think we only met 1person doing the trail the other direction!

  • @richardhunt3698

    Brian, what are the shoulder pocket and bottle holder you have on your chest straps, and what is your opinion of them?

    • @liverpoolhikers
      @liverpoolhikers Год назад

      Hi Richard. Sorry for the delay in getting back to you - it's been a bit manic round here. So the mobile phone pocket is from Hyperlite like the backpack. It's a good fit and waterproof, with sealed zips so the phone is well protected. Perfect for the job. We also originally got the Hyperlite bottle holder but that one didn't work at all for us. Even though it is from the same company as the pack it just didn't seem to fit right at all. May be to do with the kind of bottles we use: it seemed designed with slim smartwater bottles in mind and any type a bit bulkier was hard to squeeze in. Also the bottle kept hitting my chin. So we swapped it out for a cheap 3F UL Gear number from Aliexpress and have had no complaints since. I did have to add a carabiner clip to it to secure it properly though.

    Nice one guys on completing the Daddy of all trails in Britain! I always laugh to myself when I watch a kit video from someone who feels the need to tell everyone that all you need is a 500ml smart water bottle on a long-distance trail. They have usually just completed their first "hike" the West Highland Way and mistakingly think everywhere in Britain is the same with water every few miles like in the West Highlands! All the best in your next long distance walk! 👍🍺🍺😎

The ground around SP was covered in rocks and sheep poo, and the wind started blowing a gale. It took 3 of us 45 minutes to get my tent up. And the wind got even stronger during the night, so much so that one of us (not me!) had to get up at 3am to check all the tents. Plus my ankle started hurting as soon as we set off again. Certainly a beautiful day to end on. Congratulations on completing the Trail. It was interesting to hear Brian say that the Trail in points was worse that the PCT. Any 'things we wish we had done'. Or apart from the heat and Brian's feet. Thank you for sharing the adventure. Next year's big hike? Or do we see you out on the Peaks? And Wales of course.

    • @liverpoolhikers
      @liverpoolhikers Год назад

      We just don't do much trail maintenance by anything but 'sheep' in this country (though it looks like the Southern Upland Way, a trail we would love to re-do, has an amazing volunteer maintenance crew these days!) The PCT is actual trail for all of it's length, whereas the UK delights in 'signpost into cow field, good luck finding the stile on the other side' kind of hiking 😄. Things we wished we'd done differently? A) tested the water filter before setting off 😂. B) allowed more time, as the time pressure we felt towards the end marred some of the experience. Though, to be fair, we had allowed plenty of time, but nearly one week was eaten up by Brian's feet. C) not hike during a national rail strike. 🤣D) took a guidebook with mileage rather than hour distances. Didn't realise until this trail how much that bothers us. Somehow being told 'it should take you so many hours to here' is - for us - more depressing than being told 'it's this many miles to here'. E) possibly take even more water bottles! The next big trail? Not sure there will be a 'big' one this year due to our mushroom Market commitments. It takes a long time restarting the growth once you have shut it down for a bit. But we are looking at squeezing a number of sub 100 milers into convenient gaps. There are a lot of awesome trails in that category, some of which we'd like to re-hike, others we've not explored yet. And picking up day hiking again is a must! We know a guy with a RUclips channel doing the Ethel challenge, who's videos will provide a great bit of inspiration. 😉Just as soon as we have our mushroom - day job schedule sorted ....

    • @chrisbentleywalkingandrambling
      @chrisbentleywalkingandrambling Год назад

      @liverpoolhikers yes, great points. I've spent time before trying to find the next sign only to end up climbing over barbed wire because 'that's where the OS Map says the Trail is' only to find it has been moved a field or two over. I don't think I inspire anyone with my vlogs. Remember, I'm on year zero with my hiking, and every time I try a nice loop, I get lost. So even on an 8 mile hike (long for me), it's an out and back. I have the OS app now, so hopefully, my confidence will increase. I get comments like 'I'd have done a 10 mile loop' or 'that wasn't far', and I think I'm year zero trying my best, and I'm 61 and disabled. But I refrain from taking the bait. I just hope that someone else as inexperienced as me will be 'inspired' to give it a go. Because that is all I am doing. Pointing and shooting on the phone and just getting out there and giving it a go. Thanks again for the wonderful vlog and for your reply. I have really enjoyed this.

    • @liverpoolhikers
      @liverpoolhikers Год назад

      @@chrisbentleywalkingandrambling - 100% don't take the bait! We have been incredibly lucky to not have encountered any keyboard trolls or one-upmanship warriors on our channel (yet). I guess having the word 'challenge' in the titles unfortunately attracts some of the 'I do 10 miles before breakfast, hopping on one leg' brigade to your vlogs. These people are best politely thanked and/ or ignored. There will ALWAYS be someone who can do it bigger, better and badder, but at the end of the day it is your hike and you do it the way you want / are comfortable. When we started our hiking adventure (in our mid 40's!) we regularly did 4-6 mile hikes and called it a good day. Because it IS! It's 4-6 miles longer than not hiking at all. And as for getting lost ... on one of our last day hikes (not vlogged) last year we managed to misread the map to such an extent we ended up adding an entire hill to the trail because - having gotten totally lost in featureless bog land - we figured that by cutting straight over the hill we would eventually hit the return leg of the loop trail we had lost. It worked, but at what cost! Our legs (and mood) were totally shot after an hour of scrambling up and down dense heather hills 😕 And it was a trail we had hiked before! It's all part of the learning curve, sometimes flatter, sometimes steeper. You do you and don't let anyone spoil your adventure!

    Glasses: we always wear a cap similar to a baseball cap but much thinner. You can get them with large overhanging peaks. It helps in the rain and when walking through low clouds! Heidi, I feel your pain as glasses wearer. Have you tried a baseball type cap with a longish visor? That helps keep the water off my glasses in at least some conditions. Or what about hiking with an umbrella? Not that an umbrella would work in the kind of wind you were having!

    • @liverpoolhikers
      @liverpoolhikers Год назад

      Yeah, wind is an issue. Someone else suggested a badeball cap but again: does that work know wind? I seem to be unable to keep any headwear from flying off when the winds get at it 😕

    • @josephinegibbs3902
      @josephinegibbs3902 Год назад

      Sometimes the wind does grab the baseball cap off my head. I wear a ponytail hanging out through the hole in the back and that slows down the hat's departure enough for me to grab it sometimes. But that isn't much help to you, is it? I've also resorted to tying a cord to it and safety pinning that to the back of my shirt collar when an occasional gust might try to steal it. But the main thing we are talking about is in rain, to keep the wet off your glasses. In that scenario I'm usually wearing the hood of my rain shell up over the ball cap and that keeps the cap in place.

    • @josephinegibbs3902
      @josephinegibbs3902 Год назад

      Also, it might sound goofy, but you could try stitching a ribbon to each side of the cap and tying the flighty thing on under your chin! Might be worth it if it keeps the glasses functional.

    Deepest sympathies re the weather! Mind you, was ours any better - oppressive heat, no wind or shade (and no paving in those days)? Drank our last liquids at Russell's Cairn, but did manage to pick up water from College Burn (below Auchope) - was that not an option for you? As regards rain-spattered glasses, I can only recommend contact lenses! Bit of a hassle taking them in and out hygienically (and carefully!), but otherwise no problems. Then again, the only rain we had on the whole walk was a shower before Malham. Some might say we were spoilt...

    • @liverpoolhikers
      @liverpoolhikers Год назад

      Yeah, we didn't realise there was a stream near the Cairn. Visibility was so poor we couldn't see more than a couple of meters either side (and probably were in full 'get-to-bothy-or-die-trying' mode 😂). I can imagine doing that stretch in the heat is brutal! Really need to look into disposable contact lenses again. Hate the thought of going near my eyes with hands as filthy as mine tend to get during long hikes, but carrying a couple of pairs of disposables for 'those' days is probably a good idea. Better than stumbling around blindly at any rate 😆.

      @liverpoolhikers This Monday coming, I was going back to Dead Edge End, but the mountain forecast is snow and -9c with hiking advisory. I don't mind the snow, but when the mountain forecast gives out warnings, I'm tempted to agree.

  • @chrisbentleywalkingandrambling

    I was trying to hike Dead Edge End yesterday. Weather said 75% chance of rain. That's a 75% chance in a one mile square of 0.0006in rain. What they didn't say was gales and horizontal hail that cut through your skin. It lashed it down for another hour as I sat in the car contemplating life, the universe, and everything else. Needless to say, I came home. I don't mind getting wet hiking, but when you start in that for a 5-hour hike wet, then it is madness. Waterproofs. Mine leaked like a sieve. So I got proper top layer Waterproofs. Thick for warmth. But then you get wet inside because of the sweat. Lose, lose. Kudos for getting your head down and pushing on. 3 in that hut would be cramped. But cosy. Heidi, you were talking about being an 80s child. But Brian...... has he had an uphill paper round, or has he kidnapped a young lady like me?😳 The glasses are an issue for me, too. You start off able to wipe them, but eventually, you get that wet that there isn't a dry patch to wipe them on. The water issue, you could always have the noodles, then use the water for a coffee. 🙄😳 I've seen it on another vlog. It was described as an acquired taste. It was a great penultimate day on the trail, which I have watched all the way through twice so I don't miss out on any jacuzzi joke. Brilliant one-liners. Thank you for sharing your hike, warts, and all. I am looking forward to the last day hiking, then a post trail review.

      We have driven all the way to Wales for a day hike before only to turn around and go home - that we could barely open the car door against the wind may have had something to do with it. Oh dear, we really have caused some permanent imagination damage to you, haven't we?😆 Don't worry, Chris: what happens in the ferns stays in the ferns ... 😜. Your question about the subtitles was interesting: while Michele in her comment just proved that some of our US friends really do struggle with Brian at times, (we are sure people struggle with Heidi's accent, too - especially when she is butchering local place names 😂) that is not the reason for the text. It's 'wind translation' rather than subtitles because Brian is further away from the mic usually. We struggle to judge what is and isn't audible because as we edit on a laptop, where certain things seem clearer than others. If noisy things happen in the house we use headphones, which suddenly make OTHER things clearer and to top it all of we watch RUclips almost exclusively on our TV, which gives yet another soundscape! So we slap titles on whenever we are not 100% sure it can be heard. So to hear you say ot is perfectly clear is very encouraging. Out of interest: May we ask what medium you are watching our videos on?

    • @chrisbentleywalkingandrambling

      @liverpoolhikers I listen on a Galaxy Zfold3. But it is probably how I hear it rather than what I watch it on, which may give me the advantage. I listen via wireless earbuds. They may give me the edge. That and the fact that I was a Psych Nurse in a Prison for 25 years and ex RAF. I have worked with and been on the other side of the bars from a lot of scousers. Not that I'm saying there are a lot of cars without wheels in Liverpool. 🙄😳🤔 But my ability to discern dialects is probably better than our friends across the pond. Sad to hear the Byrness filling station has gone. For us, it was the congregation point for all the other walkers we'd met over the previous days, about a dozen altogether, and we stayed together for the rest of the way. Not that the shop at the filling station was particularly good - we had to go down to the village to get supplies for the final day. That forest ride up from Byrness was brutal, the worst climb of the whole PW for me: doesn't look much, but I really struggled on that before we eventually pitched at Chew Green.
