I enjoy “complex states” akin to a paradoxical emoticon that smiles while shedding tears. When I read Shel Silverstein’s short story *The Giving Tree* (1930-1999), I often experience an undefined emotion-a taste of an inexplicable sadness hidden within a seemingly happy ending.
The tree loved the boy unconditionally, but as the boy grew older, he turned away from the tree and toward the world. Even so, the tree waited for the boy for years. When the boy finally returned, the tree gave him everything it had-its apples, branches, trunk, and ultimately even its stump-yet, the boy was not happy, wh...
