Sociological Dictionary
Добавлен 17 ноя 2015
This channel is designed primarily as a help for introductory students in sociology at the University level. Each video represents an important sociological term or concept, with a video definition. Some videos are broader in scope, and many of the videos will be of the most use to students when viewed together. An effort has been made to mention these connections within the videos themselves. The title of each video represents the term it explains.
iron cage short
Short version for "iron cage" for more explanation, see the longer video:
ruclips.net/video/KKgHSY3Yy3A/видео.html
Iron cage: a feeling, condition, or characteristic of modern societies in which people feel trapped or dehumanized by rationalization forces. These forces originate in production (factory, work place, agriculture, labor, etc.) but begin to spread to all aspects of life and society. Things that are personal, such as leisure or intimate relationships begin to take on a rational, factory-like quality.

I've decided to make short versions of some of my longer videos to provide more concise definitions. For longer explanations of this concept (bureaucracy), you can go refer to the following video links: ruclips.net/video/94d5wI_kdSM/видео.html ruclips.net/video/BLlWC1hzHMo/видео.html Bureaucracy is a modern social arrangement characterized by the predominance (and preeminence) of rules and regu...
iron cage

Iron Cage: The "iron cage" is an idea presented by Max Weber as a description of the affect of modernization processes on individuals and social relationships. The idea is that rationalization and specialization forces in the work place (factory, office, bureaucracy) alienate people from their labor and make them feel they are trapped in an "iron cage" of rationalized production in which the go...

bureaucracy 1

This one's a bit long, but there's a lot to go through and it didn't seem like a good idea to cut it up. This video contains the characteristic points of bureaucracy as described by Max Weber in his original writing. Bureaucracy: an organizational system found in modern societies (and according to Max Weber, characteristic of modernity) marked by certain characteristics. Weber originally argued...
ideal type
Просмотров 31 тыс.7 лет назад
Ideal Type: a "pure" example of a social phenomenon, created by observing characteristic traits of as many cases as possible, and then combining those traits together into a definitional construct that can then be used for analysis and research. The traits used to construct the ideal type may not exist "perfectly" in reality, and rarely does an actual example fit the definition of the ideal typ...
rationalization
Просмотров 49 тыс.7 лет назад
Rationalization: the process by which society becomes more rational; meaning that ways of solving problems and approaching tasks increasingly focus on efficiency and outcomes, rather than on traditions and processes. Division of Labor

Division of Labor - The extent to which economic tasks (jobs, work, etc.) are specialized or different one from another. The division of labor increases as populations and technological development grow. The division of labor affects not only work and production, but, according to Emile Durkheim, also has moral and social consequences. While all societies have some division of labor (especially...

poverty

Poverty is a concept central to a lot of social science research and thinking. In order to really understand poverty, we first need a clear understanding of what poverty is, and what we really mean when we say that someone is poor. This video looks at two key sociological concepts, absolute and relative poverty. Absolute poverty is defined as a condition in which there is serious difficulty obt...

great video 👍👍
Situating the cause of anomie as a lack of social REGULATION is not what the theory is about, not what it's founders imagined, and a very dangerous way of mis-explaining this concept.

30 second intro
Thank you for this great explanation of social imagination. I have been having a hard time trying to understand it - I am used to looking at life through a psychological lens, focusing on behavior and emotions of individual people. I have read and watched all the resources provided by my university, but this video turned the lightbulb on in my head, and now I get it!
we used this for an example in out lectures, good work
listened this on 2x speed and it sounded almost normal speed to me
exactly what i needed
So clear !! Tysm !!! If I pass my exam tomorrow it will be thanks to your video !
Thank you for simplifying this whole concept into something my brain can understand 😭 I have to do a report about it and I got zero idea what this even meant until I watched your video. Thank you ❤
