Great man, thank you, enjoying these lessons 🙏
thank you lots for doing all these, a great service to isb fans💜
Jason thanks it’s an absolute pleasure! I also learn a lot in doing these lessons as it forces me to recheck everything against the original recordings to ensure I’ve got it right You might be interested in my new series of lessons covering robins solo career Have fun! Very best wishes Mike
Thanks for sharing this. It is quite different to the version that I know from the 1,000 spirits album, but very interesting. I've never come across this tuning. I will have to give it a try. Thanks again.
Anthony many thanks Robin has used this this tuning for most of his solo career post the merry band and used to perform this song this way during that time I’ve done a lesson on the chord shapes in this tuning that you might find helpful Very best wishes Mike
That is a lovely song. Such easy chords, I can play that. ❤
Karen I agree!! Simple is often best You could also try.. log cabin home in the sky, black jack David , greatest friend … all have only 2 or 3 chords Enjoy! Very best wishes Mike
Please note the g chord is x02020
Lovely. Thank you.
Robert.. it’s a pleasure!!! Very best wishes Mike
Could be played in standard tuning….cm becomes am, b flat becomes g and e flat becomes c Enjoy!
From just like the river album
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you so much!!!!! Much appreciated Very best wishes Mike
Oh, another fave! Thanks so much :)
I’m so pleased!!! I remember talking to Robin many moons ago he said as he got older he was starting to prefer the simple beauty of traditional songs more and more….I’m inclined to agree with him!!!! I’m trying to keep some goodies back for xmas release but please feel free to ask for any other favourites before then……I’ll try to do my best Very best wishes Mike
Thank you so much for continuing the journey! 👍
It’s a pleasure!!!! So good to hear from you again I hope you’re well and happy This has been major undertaking as robin has been playing solo ten times longer than he was in isb!!! It’s also been a labour of love given the amazing range of musical styles he has covered in that time… to date over 100 lessons prepared and loads more in the pipeline Again great to hear from you Very best wishes Mike
@@kinkade999 100! 😃 You are a maschine 😅 Yeah, Robin had an enourmous output over the years. I just listened to 'Songs Of Love And Parting' on a train ride watching the sunset over the foggy fields north of Hamburg. Complemented very well. Looking foreward to your further releases! I play mostly WTATBH-songs at the time for my personal enjoyment. Your Coverversions of the songs are great and a good addition to your lessons! All the best to you and kind regards 🙂
thanks… I had very mixed feelings about doing the wee tam and big huge covers… in honesty I haven’t really got a good enough voice but these songs have meant the most to me over the years as they are songs of my youth Also I find the there are three stages to learning a song.. first working out a the basic parts/chords the next playing passable versions and then there is performance level competence.. I’m usually good at getting to stage two but wanted to go the further mile for these my favourite songs Also I wanted to show these are playable songs since I thought these songs were gifts from the gods way above the reach of us mere humans!!hopefully it will inspire others to play them Lastly as I get older I wanted to leave a legacy for my children and grandchildren to remember me by!!! 72 and still a crazy mixed kid!!! But happy!! Enjoy your day Very best wishes Mike
Hey Mike, Yeah I know that it is almost impossible to do a good cover of an ISB-Song. The songs were perfect as they were recorded and there are so many things happening at once in each song which you can hardly reproduce with just one guitar, and their voices were just perfect. I also considered them as 'holy' long before the Archbishop of Canterbury said so 😉 because of my own experience. Some people have the same experience when they listen to classical music. It just touches the heart and the soul. I hope that your children and grandchildren will once feel the same with the ISB or any other music. Best wishes! Parsa
Well said Parsa I totally agree with you Although I did enjoy feasting on the crumbs of the gods even after 50 year after the party…and would happily do it again!!! Very best wishes Mike Ps I’m thinking of reimagining your idea with a Robin Williamson midwinter advent calendar with some interesting bonus lessons!
Thanks, it really is such a beautiful song.
Thanks so much.. I absolutely adore this traditional song… robins version is gorgeous!!! Ive over a 100 robin lessons already prepared and lots more in the pipeline Very best wishes Mike
Nice one !
Thanks so much!! Over 100 new lessons already recorded Loads more in the pipeline More details tomorrow!!! Very best wishes Mike
Yes!
Thanks so much!!! I’m really looking forward to releasing these lessons.. I’ve already recorded over 100 with more in the pipeline More details tomorrow!!!!! Very best wishes Mike
Thank you...very helpful!
Barry many thanks It’s a really beautiful song Enjoy! Very best wishes Mike
SO GOOD!! I love these videos!!
William thank you so much!! If you’re interested I’ve done note for note lessons for all the incredible string band songs on my channel and will shortly be releasing lessons on robins solo career Very best wishes Mike
Hi Mike, I really enjoy your lessons and am finding them a very insightful dive into Robins playing style and music. I'll definitely be looking out for the Robin solo lessons as I have been dabbling in the cgcgcd tuning lately and have mostly worked out Robins versions of Keep on the Sunny Side and Log Cabin Home from live performances of him on RUclips. I like the way he breaks into the lead parts and back to chords so effortlessly. If your taking requests then a By Weary Well lesson would be great! Also any from the Just like the river album or anything from the Merry Band albums would be amazing. Thanks for all your hard work! Scott
Scott thank you for your comment.. I’m so glad the lessons are helpful to you I agree with your view on robins fluid playing style both on the harp and cgcgcd guitar Good news!!! I’ve already completed lessons for all the merry band albums including by weary well.. I’ve also transcribed all of just like a river and will shortly be recording lessons for them..I’ll probably start releasing them in a few weeks time on a daily basis Ive a whole file of transcriptions of clips of Robin on RUclips which for me are some of his most interesting arrangements I love doing these lessons, I learn so much from preparing them.. especially revisiting / rechecking my older work before preparing the lessons Great fun!! Very best wishes Mike
Thanks Mike! Great, looking forward to all the lessons 👍
Scott many thanks ! Watch out for weary well tomorrow and a special bonus lesson with you in mind where I review robins single string and choral approach Hope you like it! Very best wishes Mike Ps plus a merry band track on Sunday!!
thanks for making it understandable
It’s a pleasure! Have fun with it! Ive just completed a 50 plus year dream of playing all of wee tam and big huge! Very best wishes Mike
@@kinkade999 that's great. I heard Yusuf Islam Cat Steven's was going to re-record at 70+, his Tea for the Tiller man album.
@@A_Pa-Plainjanethat’s good to hear!!!! Interestingly robin Williamson is now over 80 and has just started gigging again after a five year break!!! Best wishes Mike
Thanks for all your hardwork. Its lovely to see the mechanics of these beautiful, timeless songs.
Jeff thanks! It’s a pleasure!! I wanted something positive to come out of the first Covid lockdown so set myself the task of transcribing all of wee tam and big huge.. and then it took a life of its own to include all isb songs plus Mike and robins first solo albums Just planning a further series of lessons on robins solo career So watch this space Very best wishes Mike
I always liked rigtime music. I did not follow the lesson (as I don't play with plectrum ) but enjoyed the first part. Lke 3
Thanks !!! The lessons work just as well with finger and thumbs ie My thumb and index is your thumb My middle is your index My ring is your middle My pinky is your ring That’s how I used to play but in addition to isb and ragtime I also enjoy playing chuck berry Hendrix Richard Thompson and Danny gatton all of whom use a pick Have fun Enjoy Very best wishes Mike
Héhé, I know that, thank you; When I was young I used to play only ( no singing) and worked on tabs. But now I feel too old yo change my way of playing. A little like Mark knopfler: he just never changed his way of playing. I am sure many will enjoy and learn from your lesson, of course. As for me, I just enjoy to sing old songs from when I was young, mostly. Whish you the best: Joseph
Very nice singing and playing: Like 2 👍
Thanks a lot!!! Just part of a 50 year dream to be able play all of wee tam and big huge! Very best wishes Mike
bravo
Thank you so much It is very satisfying to finally play this song after 50 plus years!! If you’re interested I’ve done a complete RUclips lesson on this arrangement Very best wishes Mike
😊 thank you for the inspiration 👍🙂
Hi thank you for your kind words! In honesty I haven’t got a great voice But wee tam and big huge have been the the cornerstones of my life This vanity project is just fulfilling a 50 year dream If you’re interested I’ve done guitar lessons for all the string band song elsewhere on this channel I do hope it has inspired you to play this song… I’m sure it will be better than me!! Have fun Enjoy Very best wishes Mike
Thank you man, going to tackle this now 🙏
Thanks!! Its a pleasure Fabulous song and the right month to learn it !!!! I’ve done lessons for all the string band songs Have fun Very best wishes Mike
@@kinkade999 I’m came across Jon Wilks cover yesterday and feel in love with it, you should check it out! I’ve heard the song before but to be honest I’m not too crazy about the original, I guess it’s the recording quality but I can’t get into it
@@hughjosephfeelythanks so much for the heads up I absolutely agree it’s a great version.. I think John is playing it in dadgad but the top string melody is the same in both tunings String band is always an acquired taste !! And bear in mind the whole album was recorded over a weekend with just one microphone!!! Best wishes Mike
@@kinkade999 I’m working on it now, it’s a tough one to sing and play haha. Wow one mic over a weekend, okay did not know that, know very little about the band but see their name crop up quite a bit! I’ll have to do a bit of digging on them Cheers Hugh
@@hughjosephfeely I’ve literally just listened to a word in your ear podcast with sound engineer John woods who said the whole album was done in one Sunday afternoon with just one mic between all three members of the band!! Hey it was the sixties!! Good luck with the song Hugh Mike
Beautiful, my friend!!
Thank you so much Rafael It’s a quick mini project to play most of wee tam and big huge.. a dream from over 50 years ago!!!!! Next up will be a set of lessons on robins solo albums Hope you are keeping well and happy Very best wishes Mike

Thank you!!!!! I’m working on playing wee tam and big huge as a complete medley in cgcgcd A dream from 50 plus years ago!! Very best wishes Mike
One of the most beautiful songs ever written. Now I might even be able to play it myself! Great work, my friend. Thank you!
Thanks!! It’s a pleasure probably my favourite song of all time I did a second lesson on this with variations in a different register Hope you get to learn /play it Very best wishes Mike
Oh, lovely! Glad I came across this channel. Many thanks!
Thanks … an absolutely classic song from Robin I was lucky to have a two hour guitar lesson with Robin… at the time he couldn’t remember how to play any of the string band songs!! I’ve now done lessons for all isb songs Enjoy!!! Very best wishes, Mike
How about we meet at Liverpool Station on one of your visits? I am retired so I could manage most times, just let me know when you next make a visit. All the best, John
John that’s a great idea I’ve just seen a clip of the gig.. it looked like Robin didn’t have a harp on stage and also looked like bina was supporting Robin playing much isb material… is that correct? Best wishes Mike
Do you live anywhere near London, if so we could meet up? All the best, John
Hi John I live near Chichester in Sussex My daughter lives in London She works near Liverpool Street station I quite often pop up to see her Obviously my recent messages haven’t got through but ive now transcribed nearly all of robins solo work and a lot of the live clips of him on RUclips If you want copies of any thing please let me know Very best wishes Mike
Thank you so much for this -- can't wait to check out your other ISB lessons!
Don it’s a pleasure!! Hope you enjoy them It’s been a real labour of love producing them Have fun Very best wishes Mike Ps ive done playlists of lessons for each album
Don a 1000 thank yous for the isb discography post!!! I’m not on Facebook and have to rely on the kindness of strangers for such publicity It resulted in 50 views for that song Please let me know if I can help in any way I’ve just transcribed nearly of robin’s solo album a much of his live RUclips posts Thanks again Mike Ps perhaps I really ought to join Facebook!!!
Hi Mike, I was at the concert on Friday and I recorded it for private consumption, would you like a copy? As this is a public forum I'm not sure how we could exchange email addresses so that I could send it to you. All the best, John

Hi John I’d love a copy ! Ive tried twice to send you my email address in different ways Will retry soon Very best wishes Mike
Hi Mike, I will be doing the same, see you tomorrow evening, all the best, John
Hi John upon checking train time tables we would only see the first half of the concert before having to get the last train home So we’re now not going tonight..a shame ! Enjoy the evening! Best wishes Mike
Thank you Mike! This is so special and I will really enjoy listening and learning. There was no one like them and Banks of Sweet Italy is one of the most beautiful songs ever 💛
Thank you Antonia I was so lucky to have a two hour in-depth guitar lesson with Robin where he showed me his cgcgcd guitar tuning which he used for most of his solo career.. a real joy Very best wishes Mike
@@kinkade999 How wonderful!
This is lovely, one of my favourite songs and not easy to work out the chords for. Great help for my playing! Thank you 🙂
Antonia so pleased it’s helpful to you! I agree it’s a beautiful song If you’re interested I’ve done lessons on all the incredible string band songs plus Mike and robin’s early songs Enjoy!!! Very best wishes Mike
Thanks for posting this. I've benn trying to get this down for ages. I thought it might be in DADGAD. Thanks again
Dave I’m glad this was helpful I’ve done lessons for the string band songs on RUclips if you’re interested Also for most of his solo career Robin used the cgcgcd tuning Enjoy! Best wishes Mike
Cadê a Cifra mano? Quero pra ontem.
Sorry no guitar tab just the chords Enjoy , Mike
Thanks for doing this, well done. It's one of my favorite ISB songs
Nigel thanks its an absolute pleasure I’m glad it was useful to you Wee tam and big huge is my favourite isb album I’ve now done lessons for all the isb songbook plus the early Mike heron and Robin Williamson solo albums Enjoy! Very best wishes Mike
I’m revisiting Mike’s music for the first time in decades. It is amazing how sweet and endearing they remain after being away from them. I still remember lyrics and tunes after so many years. What an artist!
Hi Paul yes after all these years I’m still truly in awe of this song… the melody orchestration lyrics.. whilst it was recorded in the key of e I now play it in c!!! I came across all the meanings of the key words of the song recently eg Madhava is one of the many names of krishna whilst jayadeva is the author of bhakti or devotional poems about krishna I’m glad it’s bringing back great memories Have fun Very best wishes Mike
this song is so beautiful i tear up everytime i here it i wish there was still music like this being made
I love this song so much too I was overwhelmed with happiness when I first learnt to play it Along with maya still my favourites to play and sing Feel like im 17 again!!! Best wishes Mike
Thank you this is my favourite song of all time and i was able to pick it up easily from this, this is exactly what ive been looking for.
Thanks so glad you liked it… I ended up going two versions the first in cgcgcd and then I thought it would probably be better in standard tuning!!! I’ve learnt so much doing these lessons Robin was and still is such a genius Can’t wait to see him live this September Have fun Best wishes Mike
I’m sure that this was on an LP I had back in the 1960’s... Possibly very early Dylan or, more likely, a Donovan album called ‘What’s Been Did and What’s Been Hid’ ... I’m off to trawl the Internet to see if it was Donovan. Cheers for jogging my (fast failing) memory!
It’s a great song!!! Donovan definitely did a fantastic version in the 1960s Hot tuna did a real fun version too Happy memories indeed Enjoy!!! Very best wishes Mike
Thank you so much! Learning how to properly play this song has been like a grail quest for decades.
Thank you so much it’s a pleasure Ive been transcribing a lot of robins lesser known solo work recently including a few versions of maya I may do a further batch of lessons soon as he plays lots of songs on stage that never reached the recording studio In any event enjoy! I loved your RUclips videos You ought to do some more! Best wishes Mike
is this the davy graham version?
Hi … yes it’s from his folk blues and beyond album.. a piece of genius!! Best wishes Mike
This sort of thing seems so much easier without a pick. I never use one anyway but for anyone else, you might want to think about putting down the pick for these songs and you can pick it back up for others. Whatever gets the job done. What's comfortable for you, you should do it.
Thanks for your comments My first love is incredible string band/ robin Williamson.. then jazz ragtime blues then chuck berry/danny gatton The pick and three fingers enables me to cover all these styles.. so I’m sticking with it!!! Best wishes Mike
@@kinkade999 That's not my first love but it definitely has become my passion. Arlo Guthrie, Blind Blake, Scott Joplin, Dave Von Rank, Son House, Rambin Jack Eliot, Led Belly. That's a lot of what I've been getting into lately. But I've always been into The Who, Zeppelin all that stuff. I definitely do some jazz. I like Charlie Mingus, Chet Baker, Miles Davis. Sun Ra if I'm in the right kind of mood. Fusion too. Mahavishnu Orchestra. Classical. Ravel, Shubert, Bach. I like a lot of music. For a while I even got into Indian ragas. There's so much music to listen to and so little time. Lol.
@@MurphySlawsMusic we share similar tastes esp too much good music too little time!!! I missed out jansch / renbourn/davy graham/ pentangle as heroes Have fun Mike
Good old version but I prefer the even older Luke Jordan. All good
Thanks … hadn’t heard the older version till you mentioned it .. it’s great but almost a different song with the same title! Have fun Very best wishes Mike
