Some Combat Robot Rules of Thumb

We'll cover my general rules of thumb for motor sizes, weight distribution, and armor. Good info if you are new to robot design, or maybe compare notes with the design veterans.

During the layout and planning stage of your build, it can be expensive to buy items while iterating. Using online resources to make maquettes and models before you buy. Sites used (plenty of others beside these) McMaster Carr for standard parts: www.mcmaster.com/ Grabcad for products: www.grabcad.com Template Generator for shapes: www.templatemaker.nl

Great job!
Some fantastic ideas here.
Great video. It’s always nice taking a closer look at interesting robot designs like these.
Fun time and looks cool!
Great video
very cool, good on ya for going into the science - most people don't understand how gyroscopic precession affects all bots lol using 2822s is definitely a good idea for V2, I'm using a 2830 for my (also novel drive) ant and it's more than enough. overall very cool bot, and I love the weapon design! for the gearing problem: Tommy used (idk if he still does) Bridge Nylon from Taulman for his gears. I use 85% infill TPU since mine are exposed, but with mod 3.6 gears, a lot of interface from tip to root, and about 3 mil of backlash my power transfer has been golden. Mess around a bit more with printed gears! machined Al might be too hard, anything 90A-120A seems to work.
droopy mini
it only missing the butt cheeks, Crackjack needs a butt-crack 😉
Awesome job! I love seeing this kind of thinking, especially brought into the ant class! Maybe consider a aluminum gear interface for the weapon side too, but shock mounted to the bar through a tpu hub of some sort? That way you still avoid sending shock into the motors, but you dont get tooth skipping in the process?
I like this idea. If I can fit this into the space I have this could be just the solution!
Massive electronics for a ant!
Awesome little bot!
Interesting design!
Thank you! I can't take credit for the concept, I lifted that from NHRL' s Droopy bot. But I do enjoy how my version came out.
Great video
Luke you made my day!
What type of drive motors/ESCs do you use? Trying my hand at a higher weight class and I’m curious what everyone is using.
In Honker! I have regular brushed 550 motors connected to banebot gearboxes at about 23-27 gear reduction. They're a bit large compared to other solutions. I've seen others run 4x of something similar to the megasparks. I'm interested in smaller options but I still tend to go conservative. I'm currently looking into using brushless inrunners paired with gobilda gearboxes. I look to do a review on this motor setup soon!
@@davidritland7949 thank you. I’m just trying to get an idea of what people use.
Congratulations! We were there fighting in the Insect class and managed to get 2nd in Beetles! We love Makers Faire!
Thanks! Sounded like Big G had a really good day. Think I saw your match up with Team X Rumble
@@davidritland7949 I had to fight out of the losers bracket and had 9 fights! However this was the 3rd final this year with Mechanical Advantage and the 3rd second place lol. We have a major upgrade for this year! Love your bots I wish I had found your channel sooner!
Congratulations on winning the event! I’ve always loved Honker so it’s really nice to see it be successful.
You killed it at robot ruckus! Can’t wait to see what comes next!!
Congratulations! I love the little graphics with tech details on all the robots.
Thanks! I thought other builders would appreciate a quick summary for those bots
Nice work! What ESC are you currently using for the lifter? You mentioned it's brushed - I may know of an ESC that handles 2-6s and will suit your needs.
For the lifter, I couldn't go cheap, whereas the drive is running generic 2S RC escs from Amazon, the lifter uses a Castle Sidewinder 2 programmed for brushed.
well done, buckaroo.
Honker’s Ghost was easily one of my favorite bots at the event. Such a beautifully designed machine. I hope to see more of it in the future!
Really appreciate that! Thanks!
loved the bot at Norwalk hope to see it again
Thanks so much! Really love the Norwalk events
That's awesome! I was just researching this and getting ready to try it when I found this video.
Perfect! What I found online was limited and initially confusing. Glad it helped!
Awesome video, glad you're back! What are the drive motors out of interest?
Thanks! They are simply 550 brushed motors on a 16:1 banebot gearbox.
Nice job Dave!
I was fascinated by this design during the live feed of the event. It was great to learn more about how it worked.
Love the design. The arm movement looks great. Good luck at Norwalk!
I haven't seen many 4 bar linkages used in combat robotics before, it is pretty dang cool! I have been working on a design for a robot that stores kinetic energy in a flywheel and transfers it into a 4 bar driven launcher, but I still need to do a lot of calculations to make sure that it won't destroy itself when running.
Now that sounds pretty cool. A kinetic flywheel sounds epic!
Looking forward to the event video :)
NIfty!
Great video! I only caught your fight once the robot was already smoking, so I was very curious to see what had actually happened.
Thanks! It was a fast fight, so I'm not surprised you only caught the aftermath!
