Transitions of the Heart - Matthew Compton - An original composition for handbells
Video and audio credit to Ric and Julie Pierpont (Pierpont Productions - pierpontproductions.com/)
I was approached to compose a piece in honor of two transgender siblings by their parents in early 2021. I am so honored to have been given this opportunity to write what I believe is the first piece of its kind for handbells.
This piece is meant to be an anthem of strength and hope for those who have found themselves to be learning about who they truly are in the transgender community - those who have found acceptance and love through their transition, or those who might still be unsure and scared.
The piece tells the story of innocence in childhood, a noticeable change, frustration and chall...

A beautiful composition I had the absolute pleasure to compose with one of my best friends, Jacob Erdman. This piece was composed during Winterim at Concordia University Wisconsin when we were on break. This has become one of our favorite pieces. The title was inspired by a very brave woman who made it through chemotherapy. This was performed during worship by my summer handbell choir where we ...

The recording does not do the ending of this piece justice. When you're sitting in the middle, surrounded by bells and chimes, your breathing starts to sync with the music and you start hearing melodies in the "random" ringing that sound different at each repetition. You really don't want it to end. Surreal.

Took me wayyyy too long to realize Matt Compton was the conductor in the vid ☠️ amazing recording! It was an honor to be able to premiere this piece at St. Olaf and I’m glad to see there’s such a good recording of it on RUclips :) Quick question though… If I’m in a group that’s interested in performing this in the Spring, where’s the best place to look for it/purchase it from? Want to make sure the composer gets the best compensation possible!

Thank you for this very moving rendition of my "Prelude on Herzliebster Jesu". The full intent of the piece came through ever so clearly, that the grave could not, would not conquer and that Easter hope was just around the corner. Thank you Matt and your superb ringers for sharing this message with your congregation. Fred Gramann, American Church in Paris, France

Hello Kathy!! Thank you so much for your kind words! I never got an email saying you commented so I JUST saw this! Yes, this is my favorite piece ever and I was so happy with how well this group rang the piece (credit given to Dr. Behnke for getting the ringers to the level they are). I've never had someone describe my conducting as seamless, so thank you! Very kind and very humbling! I will be posting more videos in the future, but please check out the other videos I have!
