only1 - Polyend Play patch
I have been intrigued with the Polyend Play workflow ever since it was announced so I picked up a used v1 on Reverb. I have a few nitpicks with the workflow but overall it is a pretty fun device. I quickly realized I wouldn't be writing whole compositions on it but would be satisfied creating some random percussive loops, it really excels at quick, glitchy beats. It really likes to move more towards a generative, Autechre type sequence which is fun, but these days I am trying to be more determinative with what I create so I don't see it being a machine I would grab too often. The Plus version may actually be overkill with the interface so I think v1 would be fine as a grid based drum sequ...

    I just picked up a Play last week and I think grabbing the + would've been a mistake too! Much more interested in the synths on something like the tracker+, and stereo samples aren't too too necessary making quick glitchy drum beats. It's great for chopping up amens and sequencing some other drum machines though! (i use it with my Model:Cycles mostly)

    I felt the same way...I thought splurging for the + would make it a more complete DAW in the box. But I found it rather rigid in sequencing structure and sample manipulation without the generative features. And I found programing the synths absolutely... joyless...weird because I've worked with other menu based synths...

    • @machine_aura
      @machine_aura 17 дней назад

      my biggest gripe is the envelopes. tightening every drum sound meant I was spending all my time twisting one knob. I just picked up the Tracker+ and hoping the synth programming is a little bit better than how it looked on the Play. luckily the presets are really good for the type of music I make too. don’t want to lose that immediacy of the Tracker.

      it’s an A4 synth voice for the guitar sound, into a mixer channel. I clipped the mixer channel and sent it 100% out of an aux and back into another channel to keep level under control. DIY mixer distortion.

    Woah this is pretty good, love those detuned bell like sounds at the start, also the brighter long decay sounds starting at 0:50... how did you make those sounds? I really like it, sounds inspired by Aphex Twin's Drukqs.

      it’s the same patch on U-he Repro-5 for both sounds. I raised the filter sustain and it sounded like a whole different sound. diving into tracker workflow has helped understand a small fraction of what RDJ does. endless number of ‘tricks’ to learn still.

      @mpfmax0 Месяц назад

      @@machine_aura pls if you can share this file it would really mean a lot to me. I have been trying to learn Drambo and IDM production in general, the documentation is very spread out, incomplete and sparse, so it has been quite difficult. Drambo is complex, so is this style of music, but I love it. I just want to learn more from your work since I really like it and the particular techniques of FM synthesis and drum sequencing you are using are exactly what I want to learn more about. I spent hours going through all the connections on your IDM template demo file, it really taught me a lot more than any video tutorial or forum thread I had seen before. This song is imo way better than that demo and I could learn so much from just going through the project file and figuring out how it all works. So please, It would really be immense help if you did…. I can send you an email if you don’t want post it publicly. Anyways, thank you for your time and reply. Love your music, keep making it <3.

      I do have to refer to the manual to refresh like 1 or 2 combos when I have had a break but most combos are intuitive. the simplistic step sequencer and no screen is a nice change of pace actually. and when you need detailed info, the app shows more on the screen at once than a typical groovebox. somehow they packed some magic in this box. it’s definitely deeper than the sum if it’s parts. can start with simple 16 step loop, expand on it with step components and even get into generative territory. I don’t care for the limited sample and project memory. I back it up constantly so I don’t lose work. the buttons double-click and then your note is gone.

      thanks for watching the vids! PT is all about productive workflow. it’s where I go if I want to actually complete a full track. the ‘restrictions’ actually get you to the writing phase way sooner. I realize that a simple bass sample with a filter is all you need to get a song going. Ableton and Drambo I’m always building things for hrs, which I like, but they are endless. PT nonlinear, vertical sequencing is great. can see what notes are on all tracks in each line which makes it easy to copy notes over to other voices and build melodies. all the notes show up on the light up grid too so you can see what note another voice is playing on a step and press the same one for the voice you are writing. there is nothing else like it.
