Hi! Good tutorial, but I'm struggling with how to make much stickier snow chunks.
you added another file cache at end but cutted that part , when i copy paste file cache locatin in volume nothing is happning , cant see that smoke like structure i dont know what i skipped can you help 06:32
Hi, it's not a cut, I centered the volume in the screen, using "spacebar + g".
@@MarioLeone-nt2sv actually i cant see that volume at 06:31 after pasting the cache file path
awesome, keep them coming
Sure, subscribe for more 😊
Sure I am :)
another good one, thanks ! The scaling of the props does indeed feel weird, but the orientation seems to follow a Houdini general rule which is to align everything on the Z axis, everything you need to be positioned automatically (along a path, etc...).
Oh, that makes lots of sense, yeah sure, like what happens in the copy to point etc... Thanks for the insights, I am happy you enjoyed the tutorial.
How can you export it to Ue5?
Sure, you could do that, but you will have some complications: considering you manage to export a file containing the crowd and playback the animation in unreal. You will need to create a system to randomize materials in an effective way and the terrain adaptation will need to be done in houdini, so you would need to export the terrain too. Overall, I would suggest to render in houdini: something quite tricky like crowd is better managed in houdini. Cheers
Hi, thanks. Another great lesson, I've not got around to trying this yet but I plan to very soon.
Sure, feel free to try it out and if you have any questions, reach out. ♥️
subscribed ! You're right, not much about crowd in Houdini online. Keep it coming, and thank you ;)
Thanks for your kind words, I am happy you are enjoying the series ♥️
Love this series..thank you soo much for sharing .. is it possible to randomize the textures and export the crowd sim to another 3d software for rendering ? I’ve been struggling to figure that out
Hi, thanks for commenting, yes sure, we will see how to randomize textures and much more in this series. Regarding exporting, it can be a little tricky, if possible I would render in houdini even with mantra, arnold or solaris. We will see how to do that too. Hope this helped 😊
Thank you 🙏
Hello. Thank you for the tutorial. I am following the tutorial in the 20.5 version and cannot launch Edit Vusualizer by clicking the attraction weight attribute in the node info. There have probably been some changes in the version. Would you happen to know how to resolve that? Thanks in advance. I would really appreciate it.
This was perfect. Please make more crowd videos and include ragdoll and partial ragdoll workflow.
That would be perfect
Absolutely, I will talk about ragdolls in the next videos, the next one will be on crowd layers and randomization, then we will talk abot terrain adaptation and then about ragdolls 😊
u the best <3
Thank uuu ♥️
Is there a way to export this using Houdini Apprentice into Blender? Also, the scene import all doesn't seem to work for me, either that or I don't know how to import it into the scene graph path
Congratulation @Node Flow 🎊
Thank you so much!! 🧡
Excellent tut my dude! I appreciate that you also went into solaris/karma and explained how to get good render settings for the grains
Thanks my friend, absolutely, karma and XPU are the future of rendering. This and unreal engine!!
Great tutorial, insta-follow, I see a bright future for this channel
I appreciate that, thanks for the kind words 🧡
Thanks for sharing your knowledge here, overall I think there should be more videos about Houdini.

Super happy this helped you, more crowd turorials are coming 😊
I love it ! Continue! Could you do a tutorial on retargetting ?
Hi and thanks for the kind words, I will add this to my list!!
Hi, thanks for this. I've never really used crowd stuff because I don't use characters much. Years ago I used the motion system in c4d with mixamo type stuff for single characters - usually just to loop a walk cycle or to try and mix 2 mocap clips, but this is on another level completely. The speed and simplicity of mixing the clap with the walk is amazing. Can this type of technique be used with any mocap source - for example mixamo ? Thanks again.
Hi, thanks so much for the comment, I am very happy to hear that you have some previous experience with crowds and that you enjoyed the video. Yes this new system is amazing, and to answer your question, YES, in the next tutorials I'll show you exactly how to do that, for now I am using the MocapBiped3 only to make it simple to follow. Subscribe for more 🧡
Does this method works with lower versions of Houdini ?
Yes, absolutely, vellum has been introduced in Houdini 17 while karma in Houdini 19. Anyway I would suggest to follow the tutorial using Houdini 20 😊. Hope this helps
@nodeflowhoudini Thanks mate..And good Tutorials you got keep it going 🤜🤛

Am a new fan, great video man, If you don't mind what your pc configuration?
Thank youu, I have a ryzen 5900x and a 3080.
One question please : The volume rasterise is to give the snow the correct look ? It's like meshing ? Why not vdbfromparticle for example?
Hi, if you check the video, I have explained what it does, there is also a little pop up from the bottom clarifying. Anyway, this nodes converts the points to a volume. It's not like meshing. Hope it helped
@@nodeflowhoudini Hahaha I can imagine your face : "I explain everything, I even create little boxes, but he still asks why oh my god..." hahaha. Bro your tutorial is very clear and your little boxes are perfect! It's my brain which is slow, sorry. My question was more on the esthetic side : you create a volume for the snow to actually look good, right? You got a new sub, by the way. Thanks again!
Naaah, don't worry at all hahahah. To answer your question, yes using a volume can lead to more interesting results, it's just one of the possible ways of rendering snow. This method is particularly useful for large scale snow simulations, like an avalanche, where the snow tends to behave more like a volume then like a mesh. Thanks for commenting 😊
Great video brother, helped a lot ! did you try the new MPM solver? It seems you have more control using this method. Cheers
Thanks, regarding MPM it is not necessarily about the control you get but more about the ease of use and the presets that get you 80% there already. I am considering making a series on MPM too. Thanks for commenting, Subscribe for more ♥️!!
what if i wanna convert it to mesh after volume rasterize attributes is it gonna look the same if i tried to render it in different software ?
Hi and thanks for commenting, to my knowledge is common to render snow as a volume. But you could use the particle fluid surface SOP and convert it to geo, although I cannot assure you it will look in the same way, you will probably need some subsurface and experiment a little more in shading. Hope this helps ❤
Really nice and well explained tutorial! Also really great with a Karma snow shader 😊 I know you stated in a previous comment that getting glints/speculars in the snow is difficult. But is there any way, that you could explain how you would do it? For me that alone, is a reason to render with Mantra instead as the speculars really help sell the realism!
Hey, thank you so much. Absolutely, I understand you concern, to my understanding you could calculate the gradient of the volume using the vdb analysis SOP and then create a custom shader to add reflection to the volume using the gradient as input. Although I have never done it yet, I have seen other videos explaining the same concept and applying it for mantra. The concept would be the same and you could play with a pre-made whitewater shader or make a custom one and still render with karma. I hope this helps, I am still in the process of understanding the reflection side of a volume, as usually is not really needed for smoke, explosions etc... thank you!!
Amazing man, please keep going !!
Thanks a lot, will do! ♥️
A nice, clean and informative tutorial with a great result. the way it should be. keep them coming! thank you very much!
I really appreciate your words, I have seen so many tutorials, like most of us and I have also wasted a lot of time. With this channel I am trying to communicate clearly, without so many gaps of me saying nothing and keeping it short and easy to follow. It is not the easiest because this requires lots of small edits in post but it's worth it. ♥️
Can we render the volume with normals like in mantra whitewater shader? That is standard workflow for snow because we need the reflections/ specular
Yes you could, but using Mantra you will be limited in performances, great render by the way, but for this series we are using karma! Also using the normals for reflection is a nice trick but the proper volume reflection in shading is a more advanced topic. To sum it up I chose karma over mantra because it's faster more efficient and more subject to updates and "in studio" implementation, and I chose the "XPU pyro material" because it's a simple way to get nice results without faking reflections or diving in the complex realm of volume reflection shaders... I hope it helped 😀
@@nodeflowhoudini I am very interested in how to achieve a specular volume shader in XPU. if you can figure it out you'd be doing the community a huge favour! so many posts on the sidefx forums looking for an answer to this problem
You are right, it's a pretty well known issue. From a teoretical standpoint it should be done in the same way used for mantra, but rest assured, I will experiment in solaris, and once I have it I will post it here. Thank you for the interest and for the comment, subscribe for more ♥️
Great work !easy explanation and easy to follow :)
Heyy, thank you so much, subscribe for more 😃❤
It's so hard to find good tutorials on making snow and rendering it in Solaris! This one was super helpful, and the material was really easy to follow. Great job!

wonderful to learn how to make these interact with objects
Thank you for the kind words, yesss, vellum can be pretty fun. I am really enjoying creating this series ♥️
@@nodeflowhoudini I am happy you are enjoying making these
Thanks for the informative tutorial, would it be possible to use a shirt or a jacket as a demonstration for future tutorial related to vellum? I don't see any tutorial available online that shows a how a complex cloth structure and used for cloth vfx!!! Thanks you!
Hi, and thanks so much for your comment! Absolutely, I'm planning a full human cloth simulation for the final videos in this Vellum series. I’m gradually ramping up the difficulty, so stay tuned, the human cloth sim is coming soon! ❤️

When I import the scene it only shows me straight lines that don't move, I've already checked all the steps and I can't find what the problem could be.
Hi there, have you tried moving the timeline to another frame, rather than the first one? Let me know...❤️
@@nodeflowhoudini I changed the SOP Import Mode from default to display in the "sceneimportall" node and it worked for me, I guess it's not the correct mode, but it worked for me
@IamJeshua oh, well to know exactly what happened I would need the .hip but the Scene import all, it's perfectly fine too. In that case is important to flag/visualize the node you want to import in Solaris, as the Scene import all, will import based on your last flagged/selected node. Hope this helps!
Thank you very much for the tuto, simple and straight to the point ! One question, simulation (ex from frame 1 to frame 240) are not rendered to Karma (pyro or your sim), frame by frame it works but not if a played the simulation. Thank you very much if you could help or have an idea to fix it ^^
Probably i found an answer, it's not possible to play directly with karma xpu in Houdini, upload is required to play it in .exr format and play in AE or other stuff like that. (I share it in case of other nood like me see this comment ^^)
@marlenehaz590 Hi yes, because karma is not a realtime renderer like unreal engine for example it cannot playback your animation in real time while rendering. These render engines are called "offline render engines" and can usually achieve more complex results and allow for more customization than the realtime ones. I hope this helps, thanks for your comment 😊
@marlenehaz590 ideally you would export a frame sequence (lots of frames) and then in a software like premiere when importing you can tick the "image sequence" toggle and it will import it effectively as if it was a video. Let me know if you have any other questions, I am here to help...😊
Amazing thanks, would love to see how you’d go about shading and rendering them 😀
@zurasaur Yes definitely, for now I am preferring making shortest videos focused on something in particular, in this case, Hair constrains and plasticity so the format is shorter and easy to follow. But I get your point and I love shading, I am already planning a new series of tutorial regarding it. Thanks for commenting 😊
