On this play, the offensive player drove to the basket from my primary coverage area and I watched as he lowered his shoulder and initiated the contact with the defender.

    This was definitely your call. I had originally typed up a disagreement ONLY because I would not have called anything but on my initial viewing agreed that I would call PC if anything - BUT seeing it in slomo, I have changed my mind. I would not call anything at all. In slomo, it seems obvious to me that the DEFENSIVE player initiated contact because he was moving TOWARD the ballhandler without LGP, and THAT results in the contact. (The ballhandler did not change direction to create the contact. He simply leaned toward the defender.) The contact was before the ballhandler ended his dribble, so, because he did not affect the ballhandler at all, I'd just "play on." In real time, and from your angle, I understand making the call the way you did.

    Hmm. Not sure the slomo really helps. Frame by frame shows the runner's foot possibly off the bag and the fielder's glove still open. The next frame, the fielder's glove is closed and the runner's foot is on the bag. I do love being the "rabbit" in 3-man.

    I follow the adage 'Don't go looking for a call'. IMO, it does depend on the level of play. First one, should not have been called 'Out'. Second one, I think the base umpire was not looking at the baserunner/bag when the violation occur. Did the runner come to a compete stop? Second one may have called 'Out'.

    I watched this twice and they both look like the same play. Either way, there isn't any interference in anything I'm seeing here. The runner is nowhere close to the shortstop. You're right - he doesn't have to make contact but a runner can, literally, pause for a second to impede the fielder's ability to see a ground ball. If the fielder wanted that call to be made, he should have continued his path to the ball to show that the fielder was in the way. I suppose it's possible I'm just not seeing it. At what second mark in your clip are you saying there is interference?

    you were correct getting to 3BL extended early, but you got unlucky as the P came in and fell over your view as he lost his balance. It is hard getting to that position and not getting too close to the 1B side of that line because we don't want to interfere with the C making his relay toss to the plate. I just appreciate how R3 didn't complain or anything, just got up and trotted to the dugout.

    I am a bit confused by this take. By the time the runner "interfered," the fielder had already fielded the ball.

    • @mr9512
      @mr9512 Месяц назад

      I believe issue is the rule doesn't say the opportunity for interference stops once the ball is fielded.... rather it applies for the duration of the fielder's actions in completing the play. Once "fielder 1" releases the ball, that transaction is complete and attention shifts to "fielder 2" receiving the throw. Basically, in this instance, the interference was in part 2 of the options listed by Ump.

    • @MaydayAggro
      @MaydayAggro Месяц назад

      @@mr9512 That is clearly not true. The only way this makes sense is if he interfered with fielding the ball, which he didn't. By the time F5 came up to throw, the runner was by him. The runner did not impede, hinder, or confuse the fielder, which is obvious because he cleanly fielded and threw.

    • @mr9512
      @mr9512 Месяц назад

      @MaydayAggro I respectfully disagree. But, (TLDR: to me it's close, I can see both calls) here's where I see it though... I think we agree it was initial defense attempt at batted ball (part 1) so issue is #2. I see a violation of point 2... "2) 𝘿𝙞𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙧𝙪𝙣𝙣𝙚𝙧 𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙛𝙚𝙧𝙚, 𝙞𝙢𝙥𝙚𝙙𝙚, 𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙧, 𝙖𝙣𝙙/𝙤𝙧 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙛𝙪𝙨𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙙𝙚𝙛𝙚𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙧?" I see the fielder being impeded or hindered on the throw by the runner. He did a "hitch" in his throwing motion. A slight double clutch... As noted in point 2, interference isn't required to be only in the catching of the ball, but during the entire defensive play... assuming that was the actual rule quote the Ump is going by. If the defender had to pause his throw in the least, due to the runner, then he is hindered. That's my interpretation at least. Ultimately it is a subjective call on the part of the ref... and what they see. Have seen some doozies of calls in the past that I can't agree with, but this one I can see your point. That's the fun part about the ones he posts... they make you think and oftentimes there might not be a "100%" clear answer

    • @MaydayAggro
      @MaydayAggro Месяц назад

      @@mr9512 I'll just say this: I have umpired for over 20 years, including 12 national championships, and have been involved in baseball and softball for more than 35. I have *never* seen an umpire call interference *after* the fielder cleanly fielded a batted ball unless it was intentional or involved the runner's lane at first base. Also, F5 did not double clutch the ball as I would expect if he was prevented (or delayed) from throwing; he simply shuffled his feet as he raised his arm to throw. (His arm motion was one uninterrupted motion.) But you're right - I am sure there will be disagreement among umpires.

    • @LouTiel
      @LouTiel Месяц назад

      You're not confused. This is a blown call. We all agree there is no contact. We then get to the idea that somehow in the eyes of this umpire R2 running at a constant speed (ie no pause, delay or standing in front of F5) is somehow "hindering, impeding or confusing" F5. The fact of the matter is that U2 cannot live with his call on a consistent basis. ANY player that runs in front of a fielder fielding the ball would automatically be called out for interference.

  • @MaydayAggro
    @MaydayAggro Месяц назад

    Here's the way I make sure I am at least in a good starting position to see the play developing: As the runner starts home, I put myself where I can see BOTH the runner and the base/plate in a direct line to one side of the catcher. In this case that means puting myself in a position where I can see them on the RIGHT side of the catcher because she started in foul territory. (This also allows you to determine possible obstruction better because you can see if the catcher "breaks" your line between the runner and the plate before receiving the ball.) To see both of them to the right of the catcher, you need to be approximately on 3b line extended. I'm not sure you nailed the call here either, especially since you could not see the actual tag. The fence view is not definitive in my opinion because it is hard to tell that the glove is actually touching the helmet or shoulder at the moment the video pauses. (It's also hard to tell if the fingers of her outstretched arm are touching the edge of the plate.)

  • @lanem4304
    @lanem4304 Месяц назад

    Great call by the field umpire here - this happens a lot in lower level softball. Interference can and SHOULD be called any time the runner Impedes, interferes or confuses the fielder. Here, the runner interferes with the fielder's view of the ball by running RIGHT in front of her as she is about to field the ball - contributing to the fielder not fielding the ball cleanly. VERY easy call to make. There does NOT need to be contact by the ball into the runner (same call, but for a different reason) nor does the runner have to "intentionally" try to interfere with the fielder making the play, nor does there need to be physical contact between the runner and the fielder. Simply the fact that the runner DID impede the fielder here is enough to make the call. The runner should be running behind the fielder, or slowing down, or stopping her run in this case. Most think the runner has the right-of-way here, they do not by rule. The fielder does - but only when actively fielding a ball as is happening here. The runner by rule must give the fielder room to field the ball. Simple example: Lets say the runner here, R2, bumps into the SS while running to 3rd base (we don't need contact, but for the example it is an easy comparison)- Scenario 1, the ground ball was hit to the 3B, runner and SS bump into each other, we then have Obstruction where the fielder is in the wrong - we signal obstruction and let the play run. At the end of the play, we remove the effects of the obstruction ,and if this makes R2 safe at 3rd, then they are safe, but if the 3B makes a throw to 1st to get the BR out, we don't even make a call besides we signaled Obstruction. Scenario 2 - R2 and SS bump into each other while the SS is trying to make a play on the ball - instead we have offensive Interference, immediate dead ball, runner is Out.

    Looked safe from the fence perspective, and you can't actually see the tag from the BWC perspective. I think this was bad positioning again. 2 steps to the left (1B extended), and you'd be in a good position to see the plate, the runner, and the tag.

    safe if umpire had position

    I'm not so sure about this. Frame by frame shows no tag the frame before runner's foot is over the plate, then *maybe* a tag next frame as runner's foot is over the front corner of the plate, then more likely a tag as runner's foot is resting a few inches closer to the middle of the plate. Also, you can't really see the tag from your position because the leg is between you and the glove. In which frame is the initial tag actually applied? It is hard to tell. The only certain tag I see is as the runner is on her knee beginning the "pop up" portion of the slide after she has already touched the plate. This would have been easier to see from the 3b line extended instead of 1b line extended. You gotta get out of the "holding zone" mentality. It's hard, I know, bc I have umpired USA Softball for 20 years, and that's what they preach. But it is a *terrible* position for actually seeing most tags at home. Watch the runner touch 3b, but then as soon as you see she is continuing home, hustle to the back outside corner of the left-hand batter's box to see the tag and runner's touch of home.

    Probably. I can understand that you didn't notice it in real time. Looking at it from the fence view, PU probably could see it if he was paying attention. The intentionality is much more noticeable from that direction. Just an observation: You seem to be really far away from the bag. Maybe it's just the camera.

    This is the same spot you went to on the previously posted "kung fu" play. It's good you didn't guess the out. Well done.

    This is a very poorly officiated play. You moved in a position straight lined far behind the base runner and way out of position to see the play. it is anyone's guess whether the runner was safe or out.

      I'd say the tag means he's out. 🤷‍♂️

    Obstruction. The runner was slowing down before the fielder caught the ball because the fielder was in the way. Why did you run into the baseline to make that call instead of into the 45?

    Whose call is that in the outfield? I heard no call. The call at 2nd was routine, so it didn't really need an overhand out.

    That feller must be quite the hitter. There was no reaction by the crowd when contact with the ball was made. Only a reaction when they realized it went yard.

    Looks like the runner's foot snagged on the catcher's foot in front of the plate as the tag was made. Looks like a good out. I'll say that IMHO you moved out of position as the throw came in. I think you should be at 3B extended instead of 1B extended. The USA Softball "holding area" somewhat forces you to be in that position, but in baseball, you generally stay point-of-plate, so being up the line is not the default.

    There's not really any reason to move toward the right hand batter's box. Just stay point of plate, then move to 3B line extended and close in as the throw comes home. I'd try to be just outside the back corner of the left hand batter's box as the play happens. Good call.

    nothing wrong with this play - especially at that age group and ability. Defender actually runs into the path to block - runner didn't attempt to lower his shoulder to take out the defender, we have a nothingburger with cheese.

    watch closely runner has daylight between 2nd base and foot good tag out. umpire should of been more inside the play at 2nd and hustle to play instead of walking to play.I see nothing malicious on runner path of ball took fielder to play out.
