Jeff Suway: quantifying luminance with a camera, video analysis, & his love of retroreflective tape
On this episode, I interviewed Jeff Suway, proprietor of JS Forensics and collision reconstruction/human factors polymath. Jeff is on my short list of people to call if I need help deep diving some topic, whether it's EDR, video analysis, or conspicuity.
In this episode we'll discuss how Jeff got into recon, the current state of his firm, Jeff's real love, retro reflective tape, quantifying luminance with a camera, video analysis, and much more.

Great job - very informative. Question - have you used known dimensions instead of control shot with a total station? For my work we aren't able to send surveyors out. I'm thinking if I knew the make/model of the police car for instance I would be able to use this somehow. The known dimensions are not in a coordinate system however. How would you approach that? Maybe you wouldn't have to if survey is always available.

Thank you, Dude. If the vehicle consumes enough of the frame, you could use something like a 3D point cloud of the vehicle to provide control measurements. Once the camera is solved for, the contact patches of the tires could serve to create a surface for measuring roadway evidence. Advanced technique, but doable. If you need exemplar point clouds of the sort, we have about 1,200 of them here: lightpointdata.com/laser-scanned-exemplars.

Great to have you talk with Jeff, especially having had you use the data in a course you ran recently! Your conversation talking about 16-25 years got me thinking, has there been anyone look at the data (or even Jeff himself) to extrapolate the PRT into age brackets? I can see older drivers having an effect as well, could that then have a contributory effect on dragging the data down as a whole? And when it comes to autonomous vehicles, it's definitely a brave new world, and I don't think there's been enough noise about still ensuring drivers are still engaged with their surroundings. The NHTSA study into Teslas showed they were deactivating their autopilot a second before the crash, and if the driver isn't fully engaged yet the car is essentially out of control. You would normally have had time to go through the PRT motions, but if your attention is elsewhere when the car detects a crash, you're then having to react to the stimulus from the car and recognise what it wants before even starting to assess the roadway - www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2022/06/15/tesla-autopilot-crashes/

I almost got T-boned by a Toyota Highlander on an intersection. They had the right of way but I could have sworn I saw no one coming over that curve in the road. So I thought I could get my dash cam footage and do some math based on how many pixels per frame they were traveling and the length of their vehicle model to find their approximate speed. Can't have been going more than 5 over the speed limit when they were in front of me, but they could have slowed down when they saw me about to cross the intersection. Good thing there was no collision though.
