Practice like a pro provides free guitar tutorials on finger picking, open chords, bar chords lessons, spider exercises, building speed on guitar & guitar playing tips!
Hi I’m James, I have been playing guitar since childhood and been teaching face to face guitar lessons in the UK for over 10 years! I have built up my knowledge teaching from my music school in the north of England. During that time I have developed an effective approach to teaching my students how to play.
The internet is currently flooded with “gurus” and tutors who claim they can teach you how to play with very little effort. I challenge this notion, the truth is playing guitar is hard! My aim with the content on my channel its to bring good quality, easy to understand & clear lessons on how to play guitar.
Thanks for coming to my channel and I will see you in the practice room!

Thanks for your lesson. It helped a lot. I’m using the Yamaha c40. I rested my elbow as you taught but when I rested my palm on the bridge my hand didn’t reach the hollow in the body. 😅 I’m a long way from playing a tune but enjoying the sound of the strings.

This is like a reset for me. I finally got dedicated with practice for the last 15 months. Been a beginner for 30 years prior. You know there's this thing called life which hindered practice. Anyway, I loathe the open Am to Dm shift. One would think it's the easiest but there's always the muted b or e string. Hopefully, your tip about pushing the wrist out more will get me over this hump. Thank you. Practice practice practice! ❤

As an absolute beginner who's not taking guitar that seriously, so I'm just teaching myself some chords, this video saved my sanity (and prevented me from smashing my borrowed guitar into pieces 😂). Personally, it was the wrist advice that saved me. This video deserves so much more attention than it has of now. Cheers James ❤

My ring finger was a stupid fat tip, unlike the other fingers, it's a bitch. With certain chords it's just impossible to not touch the string below.

Something that took me a loooonnng time to realize....RELAX. You made a very good point about the shoulder. It matters! Another thing I would say is focus on the pressure of your fingers on the fingerboard. You only need enough to sound the note, not push the string through the wood ( which I did unintentionally). Techninique surely will heilp, but I would also suggest practice pushing the string ever so lightly (actually muting) and keep plucking while slowly increasing fretting pressure until the note actually sounds. You might be surprised to find it doesn't take as much pressure as you think. This helps to RELAX the fretting hand as well, making practice less tiring and more enjoyable. Good video sir.

Do you have any tips for someone with small hands? I have trouble with the C chord stretching far enough that I do bump the string below. Also any tips on the D chord I really struggle with that one? I push my wrist out and go on my finger tips but I still slightly brush the string below.
I can empathize. I also have small hands along with short fingers. Plus I play a full size classical guitar with a wide neck. Ouch! I am seriously thinking of getting a smaller size classical just because of how much trouble I'm having, especially with that dratted C chord. And forget playing any barred chords! 😮 Anyway, I hope you're managing and improving your playing. Good luck.

idk how to explain this. But my index finger shape is weird which restrains me of playing guitar ever. Actually the index finger tip is a the finger nail. It doesn't have a finger tip. It is the pointed side of like "V". So, that one pointed end is the nail and the gap underneath the nail. And that is apart from fingerprint area of index finger. I cant touch strings to the fret with my index finger. And if I press with fingerprint area, it mutes all other strings. I practises a lot but at this point, I think no practise can change the physical shape of my index finger, idk what to do. Please come forward and talk if anyone who's having such an issue, how to deal with this?

Consider heading over there if you are interested :) youtube.com/@kirkleesguitarschool?si=DztJyU8UAnJUoRSE

Thanks for watching!
Dude so far your videos are the easiest to understand. Alot of other videos assume I know something about this but you are truly starting from the beginning. Thanks bc I'm getting very frustrated and after watching your video I'm more hopeful!
Thanks for watching! Keep an eye on my channel I have lots of new content I think you will find useful coming up over the summer :)
great lesson James!
Thanks man!
Love this - going to try it on a very nice acoustic guitar I’ve got on loan at the moment 😎
Enjoy it :)
