Welcome! I have been involved with music, my whole life! Since third grade, I played the suspended cymbal with the chorus and fell in love with drums, piano, composing, and teaching! I have two music degrees: BFA music, education, and MFA Percussion performance. However, my best teacher has been life and teaching for 30+ years as I've learned so many different methods at work for seven different people! I live in the north east USA with my wife, two dogs and my 10 year old son. I'm hoping to start businesses through grass, roots, drumming, as well as grassroots piano! Learning correctly, and giving you motivation is one of my top goals! bye for now, Jim

Lesson 1: Expert Tips on How to Hold a Drumstick Like a Pro!"
Hi, I see you have everything on the lesson. Apologies for the request fir more rhythms. ; )
no worries, yes these musical multivitamins are for everybody! Saxophone is an awesome instrument! Happy learning 🙂
I play the saxophone, but is very useful no matter what instrument. Thank you 😊
Do you have a favorite type of music?
Hi, great exercise. I wish I found you last year when I was just starting music reading at the age 50's😂. Thank you very much. Could you do some of the other more complicated ones like eights and sixteenth combo? Many thanks .
No worries, what is great about music you can learn at any stage in your life. On my other channel I just spoke about this. Feel free to watch if you like :-). ruclips.net/video/qrJYYfHAZHQ/видео.html
Hey everyone! I'll be adding in timestamp soon. Happy learning!
I play guitar trying to expand my drum chops but I’m starting at the very beginning. Little videos like these are perfect exercises to get going, for me.
@@SpaceKadetMegaStar I really love the feedback. It helps me out tremendously. Sometimes in RUclips land people watch and just take, but it doesn't help the creators to know what people are looking for if that makes sense?
Keep it up! Easy to understand. Looking forward to learning more.
@@SpaceKadetMegaStar thank you again and question did you check out the videos on stick grip? It's not the most enjoyable practice session, but it will go along way. By the way, am my guitar playing is quite comical :-) But it's good for my ears
Let me know what you all think! thanks!
Thank you everybody just doing a little Saturday jamming
Hey Everyone! Please let me know what you think, sorry I had a bit of a problem with my recording equipment! I will fix soon!

I wanna rip my guitar over this
That's cool. I'm wondering if you can do a duet over this on RUclips shorts?

Props for trying to play a cool beat.
Just jamming

Another great video!! Awesome fill it’s nice to see you’ve included the bass drum even for a beginner level!! It’s always important wish I had fills like this when I was a beginner haha
@@ALICEmusician thank you so much for supporting my drumming RUclips adventure :-) yes, I agree I wish I had B.D. integration right away!
Great video! Relearning drums and this was easy and helpful. Love the visual diagram too.
@@washywashie thank you so much for your feedback! Thank you and wonderful comments... do you have a favorite music?
Thanks. New sub. A lesson on left foot work for opening and closing hi hat would be great.
@@achoice2bmade thank you for your wonderful comments and support. I'll definitely look into a video soon with left foot technique :-)
This lesson feels like going to a friend on a Saturday afternoon where he is about to teach you the basics of drumming and have a few beers afterwards. Similar to 66Samus' video on learning blast beats :D Also probably the most detailed presentation about the grip (the basics of all) I've seen, lots of key points here! Subscribed!
@@wraith29A wow! You are so kind with your comments and I really appreciate the feedback. I've been doing RUclips for a long time (this is my newer channel.) and I've never received such kind comments from all the fellow drummers especially yours thank you so much!
Nice! I am glad I found your channel. Your tutorials have been perfect to learn and start with strong basis. I am very excited for the upcoming tutorials !
@@decapent316 hey there thank you for the kind comment! Feedback is helpful! Are you learning drum set too? Also, what kind of music do you like?
Another great video. I remember one random day a few years into playing I managed to get a good flow with this technique it was a great feeling all those faster songs I couldn’t play up to speed I now can haha
That is awesome! It's always a journey and when we get to reflect, we can see and feel as well as here our improvement! Thank you for listening and watching

Thanks. Not to sound annoying but filming yourself in backlight in front of windows makes everything darker than it should be.
Yes, it sure does! We had a home emergency and this is not my main set up as I was at an Airbnb trying to make things work... many other future videos won't have this background :-)
Ive thrown sticks into drywall and into the 4th dimension but never just dropped a stick

Great lesson! Love all the different views of the stick.
@@elizabethchellis8556 for the learners I gotta put in the quality angles / views
As a new drummer my biggest fear is that im developing bad habits. Having videos such as yours that really breakdown technique and how to approach things really help. Keep up the good work its appreciated!
@@codisfer thank you! For your kind words :-) take it slow and at times we all learn something incorrectly. It's the discipline and passion that we need to work through certain habits. What kind of music do you like?
Great vid for beginners!
@@MrMufungo thank you so much! That was the goal when making this video to slow things down and demonstrate certain skills. Question: how long have you been playing drums?

@@Anti-material thank you so much I love your handle name. Sometimes I'm funny sometimes I'm a troublemaker.😂
@@grassrootsdrumming thank you
Awesome video!! I remember when starting out the one thing I struggled with was the timing entering and leaving fills haha. Very informative video well done!!
@@ALICEmusician thanks so much, we all slip up from time to time and that's how we improve, but just being aware of her inner clock is everything!
Thank you so much for your videos! I am in my early 30's just got my first drum kit because I have always wanted to learn how to play. I appreciate your focus on adult learners and really look forward to more of your content!
@@beershark7 you're very welcome! What kind of music do you like? Enjoy the journey, nothing beats drumming ;-)
@@grassrootsdrumming I love all sorts of music, I grew up a big Tool and Danny Carry fan as well as Jose Pasillas of Incubus!
@@beershark7 that's awesome! Usually people who are into music, they like so many different styles. Drumming carries into almost every single musical element up there!

@@ALICEmusician thank you so much, Alice. I appreciate the kind comments, my family and I are moving from an Airbnb back to our home as it needed to be fixed so I'm a bit exhausted these days. 😩
@@ALICEmusician how are you doing with your stroke rolls?
@@grassrootsdrumming yeah they’re pretty okay not where I want them but they’re a work in progress. Doubles are one of my favourite rudiments my open doubles are pretty okay most of the time just have a hard time with closed rolls
@@ALICEmusician I remember when I was a kid I would listen to the jazz drummer Art Blakey to get my press roll down :-)
@@grassrootsdrumming ahh awesome maybe I should take a listen to some of his stuff. Plenty of tutorials online as well nowadays and start nailing my rolls :)

🎉 hey everybody, thank you for all your thoughts and support. Feel free to hit the like button if you enjoy my lessons and content! More soon :-)
while I'm not a drummer this is basically how I practice my right hand alternation on guitar. these kinds of rhythm exercises are pretty critical for every instrument.
@@OldManSilencer yes! Thank you for sharing your thoughts as I completely agree. If we don't practice with a sense of flow, our music becomes stagnant. How long have you been playing guitar for?
@@grassrootsdrumming off and on for about 20 years.
Awesome video!! Appreciate you doing right and left hand lead!!
@@ALICEmusician thank you so much for saying hello! How long have you been playing for?
@@grassrootsdrumming You’re welcome. It will be coming up to five years this month!! 😁
@@ALICEmusician 🎉👍 you're gonna have so much fun! It's funny. I have a big jazz background, but I wanna get into rock again. What kind of music do you like?
@@grassrootsdrumming that’s awesome!! Honestly I need to branch out again to different genres I haven’t in a while since my drum lessons have been cancelled for personal reasons. I’m mostly a rock person do want to branch out to pop punk but my control when it comes to speed isn’t quite there yet so I look a mess 😅 but I also want to branch out to things like funk because I love funky music haha. Jazz is also something o should do more often
@@ALICEmusician years ago, I had a wonderful musician telling me eventually you'll be become your best teacher, although that doesn't always fit every student, but if you have the inner Drive, you'll be on fire! I haven't met a drummer or a student that says they hate funk, drumming, so good for the soul and coordination
Great!
Thank you
@@DiamondGirl-1234 you are WELCOME‼️ how long have you been playing drums? Do you have a fever kind of music? Bye-bye wish you well.
@@grassrootsdrumming just getting started.
@@DiamondGirl-1234 awesome! Did you get a drum set yet? Or just focusing on stick technique with a practice pad?
@@grassrootsdrumming practice pad
Nice start. May i suggest. The first 'one' is indeed hihat+base, but the first 'one' after the fill is crash+base. The rest of the band will be looking for that 'one' after the fill. You might as well get that in right at the beginning of learning. Don't forget the hihat hits of stem and tip of the stick.
@@perro0076 thanks so much! I plan out of basic outline, but then I just go and teach like if you're on the room in the crash was a little extra :-) but I think many viewers will benefit from your thoughts. I always love feedback! 👉 how long have you been playing drums?
@@grassrootsdrumming Hi. My wife and I have only just started. Still trying to nail basic grooves. We thought we were doing OK until our teacher threw that hihat technique at us. Also introduced basic paradidles for use in fill-ins.
@@perro0076 the shoulder tip takes some time to get used to and I definitely didn't want to teach it for very first lesson on RUclips! However, I just recorded that yesterday. It's all about the journey!
