Halloween Monster Lanterns
I shared these little 'Halloween Monster Lanterns' online last year and they proved very popular. They are based on one of the mask-making ideas from my book 'Art Shaped', just a little smaller. They are made from just one recycled cardboard tube using a technique that I call 'pure making', where all of the material gets used up and any offcuts get incorporated back into the design. You could paint these, add details with markers, spray them, or even paper mache them to make them stronger. I just added a simple corrugated card base to make them a little sturdier.
They look great lit up, but *don't use candles though! I've used the battery powered tea lights.
If you like this idea please c...

Cardboard Flowers (in a vase)
Просмотров 2232 месяца назад
This 'one-tube' creation is based on one of the projects from my book 'Art Shaped'. It's a simple way of creating a vase of flowers which appears to be a lot more three-dimensional than it really is. The trick is to make a very simple folded base (shown at the start of the clip) which then looks like a flat table-top. I've then used a half-cylinder (half of the tube) to suggest the vase shape, ...
Cardboard Tube Whale
Просмотров 3332 месяца назад
Here’s a whale made from just one large cardboard tube (kitchen roll) This is another ‘pure making’ project from my book Art Shaped, which you can use to make all sorts of sea creatures, whales, dolphins, sharks, and other fish. I’ve just used PVA glue and some tape to hold this together, then I’ve added colour to it by simply pasting on some tissue paper (using watered down PVA glue), and pain...
Cardboard Carousel Horse
Просмотров 1233 месяца назад
I was asked to create a carousel horse for 'World Funfair Month' and so here's one that magically appears from a square of cardboard (and one straw). I like to create fun projects which children (and adults) will find exciting, but which are also versatile, allowing them to adapt the artwork and add their own ideas. You could easily add more detail to this design, try different colours, make mo...
Egg Box Hippo
Просмотров 2593 месяца назад
I always thought that egg boxes looked more like hippos than crocodiles! Here's another 'transformation' for you, this one uses almost all of one egg carton, and all you need is some PVA glue and masking tape to hold things together, and a bit of paint if you want to add some colour. If you like, you can glue on a layer of tissue (I've just used toilet roll) to make the model stronger, and, if ...
Cardboard Tube T-Rex
Просмотров 3394 месяца назад
Transforming one cardboard tube into a T-Rex. This is an idea I've used for a while now, but I decided to look back at it and apply my 'pure making' method, this means that every part of the original tube gets incorporated into the design, leaving no waste. It's completely recyclable, and the only cost is the glue which is holding it together. If you like this idea, please take a look at my man...
Cardboard Dragon
Просмотров 2514 месяца назад
I recently did a couple of projects with school groups based on dragons, both using some basic cardboard construction techniques. So, it inspired me to try a more complex version myself. With work like this it can be simplified down to just three or four shapes, but it can be made much more elaborate and you can add as many layers and details as you wish. For each stage here I’ve glued the piec...
Cardboard Tube Houses

I love a challenge . . . and these little houses are a great way of experimenting with what I call ‘pure making’ . . . can you create a house using every part of the tube, leaving no waste? I’ve made 6 different versions here, all made intuitively, without designing them first or using photo reference, just trying different ideas, experimenting, and basically enjoying the process. All you need ...
Cardboard Tube Viking Longship
Просмотров 4837 месяцев назад
This cardboard tube Viking longship is a great example of what I call ‘pure making’, where all of the materials get used up in the design, leaving little or no waste. Any offcuts from making the ship become the surface of the sea, making use of them, and creating less clearing up afterwards! All you need is one cardboard tube, a pencil, a pair of scissors, some PVA glue, and a little tape to ho...
Cardboard Tube Chinese Dragon
Просмотров 93210 месяцев назад
As the Lunar New Year approaches I wanted to create a Cardboard Tube Dragon which children could adapt and have a go at making themselves. This entire piece is just made from recycled tubes, glued together with PVA, and held in place temporarily with masking tape. You could decorate this however you liked, using all sorts of collage materials but I’ve kept mine simple. Just using paint, and a f...
Egg Box Monkey

If you’re going to be truly creative you have to ‘play’, because if you just make a plan and stick to it, then you learn nothing other than what you already knew. When I come up with ideas I always try alternatives, sometimes leaving a project and coming back to it with fresh eyes. This 'Egg Box Monkey' is a great example of the kind of process I go through. I like artwork that is adaptable and...

Wow I will try to make this
You are a British person right
Yes, based in the UK 👍
Why is it to fast
Hiya, virtually all of my clips are edited to share on social media, and they have limits . . . 1:30 on Instagram, and 2:20 on Twitter. So, I speed up stuff that's repetitive, and edit out parts that you can work out for yourself. What I create isn't a 'perfect' result, I leave room for you to work things out, adapt, alter, add things . . . these are just a guideline to the techniques and methods that I'd use. You can always do some and then hit pause? Have fun.
I made it for my school project and it looks amazing! I love it! Thanks!❤
That's great to hear, thanks. 🙂
Just wondering, what brand of paint do you use?
@@Luvbaking9 I only use water-based paints (very occasionally a little acrylic if it needs it) I use the same they use in schools, the sqeezy bottles of ready mixed paint. On this I use some metallic paint too, again just water-based stuff.
love it ❤💀
Thanks
super cool, lots of design elements:) thank you for sharing 😊
Thanks, the basic 'making' is clearer in the 'Tube Houses' video, but the techniques are the same, I'm just pushing them on a bit here! 😁
It's very whimsical. Nice job!
Thanks. The fact that the tubes are curved means that when you build something like this it has quirky twists and bends, just like an old building would. It's one of my favourite things about using them. 😊
Very good creative ideas 💯
@@seemahemanthkumar5289 Thanks. Make sure you have a look at the website if you haven’t already seen it. No subscription needed and lots of free ideas using simple materials. 🙂🙂🙂

Thankyou..
Greatest fun making these fishes...
It's a great example of how simple sculpture can be put together, without following a strict method, you could use this technique with kids of virtually any age. 🙂

WOW SEMPRE UNA SCOPERTA!!!!
Grazie, ogni giorno è qualcosa di nuovo. 🙂
That's cool. I used to make stuff like this. Paper plate for the base then cardboard and various trash (like cans and single use cups, aluminum foil) to make the form on top. Hot glue and tape to put it together. Then I would jab holes in the sides with scissors and put yarn through to hold it on my face. Nowadays I have a reusable clay I make the armature from then I layer paper mache on the top. Then I use elastic for the strap. It's a lot easier to get nuanced shapes and better structure this way, but you have to pay for the clay (I also have a lifesized mannequin head so I get the size right and don't have to buy as much clay), so I'd recommend this kind of way in the video for people who don't have any access to money, or only enough for necessities. Mask making is very fun I think more people should do it. Some other ways people do it is carving from wood, eva foam, leather, making from gourds, some people do it with clay but that's pretty heavy, crochet. I even saw someone do it with yarn, they had a weird way to put it together and make it solid. And I saw someone make one with an animal pelvis. Some people even use metal, for example traditional Japanese masks are carved from wood with metal eyes. All of these coming with their own costs. Making from paper and trash is the best budget option, paper mache is also budget and is sturdier but more time consuming. Anyways I recommend you look up these other options if you have more resources available to you and want to try a different method.
Thanks for the info, it's a fascinating subject. The work I do now is pushed by a desire to make things as accessible as I can for children, so I use the simplest, most available materials I can, and the least amount of processes. To get to that point I've made tens of thousands of masks, models and sculptures over 35 years, some of which are way more complex, time consuming and costly than what I do now. When you come back full circle, and have experienced all that, then the purity and simplicity of what you do is enriched by all of those other successes and failures. 🙂👍
That’s so clever!
Thanks 🙂
