I heard somewhere that when the Who production team called the Hartnells' house to ask if Bill could return, he got to the phone and leapt at the opportunity despite being in absolutely no condition to perform by that point. Eventually they were able to arrange for him to record his scenes at home from cue cards, which allowed him to have this one last appearance as the Doctor. Dedicated right till the end. :)

Fun Fact: The whirl effect done for the first three doctor's intros could only be done using the black and white cameras they had. In order to get Jon Pertwee's opening to still have the whirl effect, they had to record it via the black and white cameras and add the color in as an overlay.

This title sequence is actually in its original format from a production point of view since the colour camera used to film it didn't produce the howlround effect very well so they found it easier to shoot it in black and white (like the test footage) and then colourise it. Makes the colours quite sharp i think.

The chroma dot colour reconstruction was quite impressive, but the DVDs seemed to be overly aggressive with the noise removal: the VHS was noisier but had a lot more detail in general. It's too bad that they didn't combine the multiple sources or use less aggressive noise removal on the DVD.
