At first I considered making a regular top-down RPG-like game with visual novel storytelling aspects, but after this series I've started to reconsider my options. I still want to implement visual novel moments - with full sprites and scene changes - while still offering the player the room to move around in an environment. Giving that sense of being in the world, ya know? Instead of strictly locked in dialogue sequences with simple click-based mechanics that so many visual novels do. Now I'm considering doing it in a side scroller fashion. Especially since I had no plans to do any fighting system, to begin with, but rather the generic horror "run" and "hide" game mechanics. I still have quite a few challenges ahead of me - RPG Maker is new to me as a whole- and I appreciate you offering these tutorials free to follow on YT. It has helped and inspired me a lot so thank you.

I used your aspect ratio but I was wondering about the thin black bars on the left and right of the screen when play testing. Will that be there after exporting (along with the purple bar on top that you get with the window for max/min and closing the game) or is there something to make it truly full screen? Not sure if your example was cropped for the video or if I goofed somewhere. Total noob here. Anyway, thanks a bunch! Love your videos.

Hey @sidemv I am having trouble with putting more layers into my test game. I have the two layers but i cannot get anymore to work like in your video. With having some in front of the character or just behind or having buildings in the background slowly moving. Help is much appreciated.

I was wondering, I’ve managed to do the whole tutorial exactly but my character is continuously doing the auto run command even after the map loads in- is there anyway to stop that :0?

I personally favor QSprite over Galv's plugins. Nothing against Galv's, my main issue is how all animations need to have the same number of sprites when using them. So if, for example my idle has 3 frames, my walk has 4 and my run has 6 I would need to make them all have 12. Nevermind if the run had 7 frames instead. QSprite lets you use a sheet with any number of frames and set the animations using any of the frames you wish, including number of frames on each animation - they don't even have to be the same number for all directions of one. You can also create new animations from the same aheet, and use the same animation sets on more than one image without needing to configure anew as long as they have the same number of frames in the same positions.

Let's goooo, new SideMV video! You have no idea how excited I was to see this crop up on my feed. Really digging the new intro and the 3d presentation! Your explanations are really clear and I definitely have a better understanding of how your template works now. I've noticed that there's something in Galv's Character Animations that runs a common event after the player has been idle for a certain number of frames, and I would assume that's for idles that the character briefly does (rather than just an idle for breathing). Would you happen to know how to use that? I've got a vague idea how to (probably briefly switching actors using that common event?), but wanted to ask since this video goes over the rest of the plugin pretty well. Also, I'm curious - I know I touched on this before on one of your streams, but is it really not possible to enable the front and back sprites at all? Some sidescroller games do have mechanics where the player looks up and down to interact with the environment, so I was just reeeeally wondering if it was possible to disable the left/right direction fix. I hope that's not too bothersome a question to ask! Either way, thank you for this informative video.

I love the way this channel inspires and facilitates creative ways of using MV. Top-down RPGs are all well and good, but I think there's something inherently compelling about using an engine in a way outside the boundaries of what it was made for. So glad you're continuing this.

I know this is your whole stück, but the RPG Maker is made for top down JRPGs and so I'm curious whether or not you will make content on rpgs and maybe even on coding? Best regards.

The tut is amazing but ive got a problem, evertime i try to run the game, i keep getting the profile error and as a beginer i have no idea how to fix it-

I was wondering, is there a way to do a perspective switch, like how you have the overhead map and then switch to sidescroller on an encounter like how Zelda II works? I was working with someone that might have that approach and I'd like to know if it was possible at all or not.

When playtesting the game, I often just get a black screen! does anyone know how to fix that? It started happening after I applied the options explained in "Map Layer Loader" (5:11) in this video.
