    I have to think the station moved to another building and this stayed as the transmitter site. There are FM antennas at the top of the tower. This would be a great location to house a ham radio station.

      We were on County Rd 23 near the intersection of Hwy 605 which runs up from Grants. I think Haystack runs into 23. It’s all dirt road and it is fenced but I was told by a guy that has been there many times that the part we were on is BLM land. Apparently it’s okay to fence BLM land to keep the cattle in but the public has access. Just close gates when entering or leaving. Good luck! Thanks for watching.

    Broadcast Engineer. There are a lot of abandoned stations like this and more coming as local stations go network. Originally studios would sometimes be with the transmitter like this was. Back in the day the transmitters and associated equipment required constant monitoring and servicing which is why I suspect many went off the air at night. Never mind the tube using a small neighborhood worth of power. We still use tubes in some transmitters but they only require checking up on from time to time. The solid state stuff is slowly taking over and don't really even need an engineer anymore as it's smart enough to tell you what's wrong. In the case of a lot of radio stations I know and done the changover they go network and all that is left is a rack of equipment at the base of the tower being fed by a sat dish and/or an internet connection. Usually by that time the studios have been allowed to languish so are often full of old equipment thats only worth salvage to other engineers needing it to maintain other old studios and thus gets abandoned. We try to save the old stuff when we can but sometimes aren't able/allowed to. Makes me sad really and wish I was around for the heyday of the local stations being the social hub of the town. I heard stories from my mentors about how awesome it was. The studios that are left... just ghosts and memories now sometimes you can feel the vibe it had. Good luck and safe exploring.

      I remember very well when I was a kid, when the television station shut down late at night or early morning, the station would put up a test pattern, one test pattern I remember was black and white, round with an Indian head wearing a huge feathered head dress like an Indian Chief, there were also pie shaped slices some were a black some were white and there were numbers and letters printed on the test pattern. As a matter of fact, you can Google television test patterns and see what I am describing, some of the newer test patterns were colored, I think the colored ones were to test the stations color guns, there are three main colors used in the analog television stations, red,blue and green. Anyways, cool video and thanks for sharing this with us.🇺🇸😏👍

    As for that wire spool, I wonder if it was for the coax going up the tower? You see, for am AM station, the entire tower is the antenna. AM runs on lower frequency or longer wavelengths and the height of the tower matches that wavelength. More efficient for transmitting that signal. However, if the transmitter was changed to the FM band, then FM is sent on higher frequency than the AM band which means shorter wavelength. ( Yes, higher frequency means shorter wavelength). Those antenna on top of the tower are matched to that wavelength.. Shorter wavelength, shorter antenna. Therefore, the tower itself in not the antenna but mearly the hoist and that spool of cable connnects tha transmitter to the antennas up there! I hope this explains things in case some one may not understand that. Laws of physics!

      not counting staff, the largest bill is usually electricity, then rent or bank payments, then property taxes. From what I see here, they have several AC systems so that's in addition to running the transmitter gear. Might be a couple of grand a month for power. Might be less, depending on the local utility rate.

      FM broadcast stations use antenna's mounted on top of their towers. AM stations use the entire tower itself as the antenna, this is why you cannot touch an AM station tower that's on the air, but it's safe to touch an FM tower while it's on the air because the tower is not carrying any RF current.

      @rupe53 That is true. The wavelength of AM is such that the entire tower becomes the transmitting antenna. However, I, too, could see the actual transmitting antenna array for the FM station near the top of the tower. Since WBBK completed their transition to FM, that frees up more of the tower's height for serving as the transmitter facilities for other stations whose studios could share the old WBBK-AM building.

    • @rupe53
      @rupe53 3 месяца назад

      @@scratchpad7954 yeah, I picked up on that too. These days I would venture a guess that most towers have more than a single license holder because it's easy to sell extra tower space and there's always someone looking for a site that's already approved by zoning, the FCC, etc. BTW, with the advent of fiberoptic and high-speed cable, a studio can be most anywhere and remotely fed into a tower site.
