    It's a superb receiver. Thanks for the demonstration. In more than 50 years of licensed operation, I've never quite understood the attraction of contests, and rarely even know when they're on, let alone what they're celebrating. Sure, if I'm accidentally caught by someone because an event is happening, I'll respond out of courtesy, log the contact and give a serial number, just to keep them happy. But if a pile-up starts, I'll either go QRP to finish my tests or else sign off until the frenzy has ended.

    I just got a new Malahit DSP2 - I thought for shortwave you had to use the left HiZ antenna port? It seems to default to this when you select the SW band (light turns blue on top). How/why are you using the right 50 ohm green light port?

    • @echelfordars8854
      @echelfordars8854 Месяц назад

      Instruction manual, page 8: If you are using an END-FED aerial on the HF / shortwave bands, these present a high impedance and you need to use a high impedance input to maximize the signal - this includes the telescopic aerial that you get with the radio (which is clearly also end-fed). If you are using a dipole or similar aerial, this has a low impedance and 50 ohms is the standard. My active loop antenna has a low-impedance output and so matches better to 50 ohms (although it will work on either, but the frequency range and sensitivity is best on 50 ohms). You can set the default in the RADIO menu.

      Looks prone to 2nd-order harmonic distortion due to gain differences in the push-pull transistors, so could imagine strong 40m stations 'appearing' in the 20m band. On the plus side should offer some common-mode rejection.

      Thanks for the information. I selected the transistors quite carefully to try to match their gains. I haven't heard any cross-band imaging unless the RF gain is cranked right up on the Malahit, but this is a problem on most receivers and especially, it seems, with SDRs. Experience helps me to avoid this.

    How is the noise level compared to other recent SDRs (e.g. SDRplay's RSP1A or RSP1B)?

    • @echelfordars8854
      @echelfordars8854 4 месяца назад

      Good question. I have an RSP1a but it is operated under very different circumstances from the Malahit, albeit at the same location. Local noise is moderate here on most bands. I have no reason to believe that the Malahit is anything but better than the RSP1a and it has more control over the individual gain stages which helps (when you understand them). The Malahit requires quite careful optimization of the RF gain, and the noise reduction system is outstanding. SNR is always difficult to compare between different receivers.

    • @casybond
      @casybond 4 месяца назад

      @@echelfordars8854 Thanks for your detailed answer! Being new to these radios, what do you mean with "careful optimization of RF gain"? Is this something you need to do once or be aware of all the time (when switching bands)?

    • @echelfordars8854
      @echelfordars8854 4 месяца назад

      @@casybond For optimum reception, it is something that you should check regularly. To make a radio signal audible, you can amplify it at either the RF stage or at the audio stages. In general (and it's a significant generalization), amplifying the RF by a certain amount introduces more noise than amplifying by a similar amount at AF. Some radio amateurs operate their rigs by turning the audio volume up to almost maximum and then adjusting the RF gain for comfortable listening, thus minimizing the noise. However, the real situation is more subtle as there are different forms of distortion that can occur during the detection process. Some distortion is not usually a serious problem in (say) amateur transmissions, but for other purposes (including very weak signals) can affect readability. Also, there is the question of the operation of the automatic gain control circuitry (AGC) that tries to counteract fading. The Malahit has at least three RF gain settings; right at the front end (aerial) and at each of two IF stages (sometimes only one is used). These latter two are fixed for most purposes, but the Malahit allows you to access them if you wish to do so (most of the time you won't, but the option is there). I don't know if the RSP1a allows similar twiddling. Careful tweaking of the RF gain (or input attenuator, similar) can significantly improve the signal to noise ratio of a particular signal on a particular band (at a particular location and time of day!). I hope this helps.

    • @casybond
      @casybond 4 месяца назад

      @@echelfordars8854 Yes, this helps a lot. I've worked closely with analog electronics designers and have an (digital) electronics/CS background, so I immediately understand what you're talking about (except the jargon IF, but I'll look that up). Thank you again!

      @@casybond IF = Intermediate Frequency. In superheterodyne ("superhet") receivers, the incoming signal is frequency-shifted to a fixed frequency (the IF), and then detected by a circuit that is optimized (in sensitivity and filtering) to that fixed frequency. This provides the best performance in terms of both sensitivity and selectivity.

    Ha HA seriously ! I loved this.. then I'm thinking he's pretty bored stuck at home .... oops ... I realised I spent 20 minutes watching, glued to the screen, fascinated!! I'm definitely off to the next hamvention. Thanks Phil ... 73 de M5PM 🇬🇧

    Absolutely fantastic!! I thoroughly enjoyed this very clever and creative rendition of a typical hamvention. I was saddened when months ago, when I found that you did not plan to make it this year.... but who would have thought that none of us would be meeting for the yearly reunion. Your video has brought a joyful smile in a challenging time. Thank you so much for using you God given talents and sharing such joy with us all :)
