2024 Tennessee Deer Season, BIG miss, BIGGER Redemption!!!
2024 Tennessee deer season is finally here!! Spent 4 days hunting pretty hard in less than ideal, (80° days and nearly 70° nights), conditions. Day 1 was extremely slow. Day 2 picked up a bit, but not much. Got an opportunity to take a shot so you can imagine how amped up I was. Buck fever got the best of me though and....well, you'll see how it turned out!
I got a chance to use my HECS suit and must say, I think there's something to it. I got winded a couple of times by does, but never busted. They smelled me but couldn't quite place me, so after staring at me in the treestand for a while, and while being very attentive, they never alerted. What are your thoughts on HECS if you've used or...

Just some trail cam videos of bucks on the farm. A pretty good mix of age classes. Good mix of bucks I recognize as well as a couple that must be roaming their Fall ranges as breeding season quickly approaches. Temps starting to drop amd the rut is on the way...looking forward to more daytime activity!

FAILED SUMMER FOOD PLOTS!! Started From Scratch, Found Success!!
Просмотров 79Месяц назад
Low and behold, the mid-June planting completely failed! This summer was BRUTAL!! Bone dry and scorching hot. The only thing that managed to come up were a few more weeds and some woody chutes and sprouts. Even my switchgrass and giant miscanthus looked like it was barely hanging on!! My goal is to use as little herbicide as possible, but I had to make a command decision and get some glyphosate...

All of the rye and oats have gone to seed. Want to get some black oil sunflowers, buckwheat, and milo down to keep something green and growing and continue to improve my soil. The goal is to plant directly into the residual standing oats and rye, then come back, mow it down with the brush mower, and add some soil amendments. Hopefully mother nature cooperates and gives plenty of rain to get it ...

The beginning of a very, very dry summer. Rye and oats all came back in Spring, went to seed and died. Lack of rain has been tough on the screening I planted as well. Plan is to plant summer plots directly into dead rye and oats, add some soil amendments, mow it down for a layer of thatch, and pray for rain!! As always, enjoy the video and thanks for checking us out!!

    Those bucks have some nice size, straight spine and no gut. A couple with a little sag in the gut indicating over 4 racks might not be wide but without genetics some bucks will never have large racks. I think culling the tall tine tight racks bucks first will help the genetic pool.

      @karlhall9561 agreed. A few of those aren't ones I've seen b4 and don't recall seeing them last year. So theyre probably cruisers from all around. Next fall is my target to start hunting the property. I'm curious to see how/if any improve with 2 years of improved nutrition. That area is really limited in natural food. No food plots anywhere so until last year, they were getting by with what they had and....corn piles in the fall and winter (hunting season). Will be interesting to see if better year round food source makes a difference in size and quality (body and racks). Thanks for checkin us out bro!! @@MonsterBucks1451 it's super tough! I feel like I'm headed in right direction though. Got new soil tests back and know exactly what I need to do. I'm actually kind of surprised the plots have done this well considering how bad the soil is. I want to go in direction of no till, but I have to be honest in saying that the plots are nowhere near ready for that. They never got off to the proper start. January will be an overhaul for me. I plan on doing it the right way. Mowing down all the milo, adding the reconnected fertilizer and amendments, and using a disc to actually incorporate everything into the soil the way it should be. Luckily here in the South winter is rather forgiving so it will be oats, fixation balansa clover, and crimson clover in Jan. I would like to see it take over the last part of winter and grow pretty good once spring rolls around. I feel like then I will have a better situation going into summer and fall. Thank you and stay tuned, as you know, it never ends!!!

I haven't seen Primo in months, my guy here Adonis has been hanging around though. Crazy thing..at the end you can see him making a scrape. This is a camera I had over a mock scrape I created that was rarely used, and apparently got blown down in Helene. The camera is set up right over the one I'd made. The one he's making is JUST off camera to the right. Where he's headed is where I see my 2 year old and yearling bucks and all the does enter into this food plot. I'd venture to say there's a community scrape there that they hit before going into plot. Since they come from other direction though....I never see it. Great thing is the scrape is across from my blind about 20-30 yds and about 20-30 yds from the tree where my stand will be. Now if I could get some of this activity during the day...I'm in the money!!! I think it'll pick up as temps drop and rut starts to roll in!!

    That looked pretty similar to what mine looked like years ago. Once you get that fixed up your plots will explode. I am willing to bet the reason your better nutrient plot did not do has well had to do with micronutrients like boron. Enjoy the soil improvements journey! I might recommend using humic acid since you have sandy soil. It works great for that type of soil. Anywhere from 200 to 250 pounds per acer should be enough.

    • @VanceVenisonOutdoors
      @VanceVenisonOutdoors 5 месяцев назад

      Actually, it was your boron video that made me circle back and re-examine that 1st sample, noting that ALL my micros were terribly low! I actually applied Anderson's HumiChar, which is supposed to have humic acid and biochar in it, to both sides last year. I wasn't sure of the application rate though, so this helps a lot. I only applied about half of the rate you suggested. I will definitely hit that again in the near future! Thanks for checking us out and for the suggestions!! It is definitely a journey indeed!!!

      I have a question to run by you. I'm going to do summer plantings here in a few days. Going to broadcast black oil sunflower, buckwheat and some soybeans. My deer population is pretty low, so not terribly worried about them wiping the beans out. Of they do, I'll live. My question though, this will not be my fall planting. For fall I plan to broadcast into the sunflower, beans, buckwheat and mow afterwards (don't have a crimper). In this instance, will mowing kill the beans? I'm in the south, so long growing seasons and plan to mow/plant for fall in September. Just wondering if beans will grow back and have any presence at all in the fall?...

    • @MonsterBucks1451
      @MonsterBucks1451 5 месяцев назад

      @@VanceVenisonOutdoors most likely it will kill your beans especially once they start to flower or make pods. Your probably get a few to comeback but it will be a low percentage unless you mow them up has high has possible. For me I just broadcast right into the beans and leave them standing but that option forces me to use higher amounts of seed but it works for me at least.

    • @VanceVenisonOutdoors
      @VanceVenisonOutdoors 5 месяцев назад

      @MonsterBucks1451 ok. I really don't want to leave the buckwheat and sunflower standing thru fall into winter. Maybe I'll just hold off on beans and make them part of the fall planting? So when I mow/terminate the buckwheat and sunflowers beans won't be affected..September planting still leaves some time for warm weather down here....

      @novi2000 I actually found that using a drag harrow was much more effective. This soil is SUPER sandy and there are tons of pine seeds and other stuff in it. Using the harrow keeps me from losing so much moisture and depending on which side I use I can incorporate fertilizer, lime etc without worrying about bringing dormant, unwanted stuff to the surface...or just lightly cover seeds after planting. That little tiller is actually spot on!! If all those roots and vines weren't everywhere that little thing would have crushed it! Thanks for checking me out, appreciate the comment!
