Pretty sure they were shooting an iron target. Probably one of those that swivels on a hinge at the top. Those are notorious for ricochets. Although I wouldn't guess a .50 would bounce off. Maybe it was shrapnel off the target. Although I seriously doubt shrapnel would make it that far.
