The 87 offers more versatility but unless you're recording like a horn section, a church choir or two people singing on both sides of the microphone "8" you don't need all of that. The 102 is great for a rapper. 👍🏿☺️ Great video!

The manley has smoother high frequencies the sound silky smooth without sounding harsh i have the U87 and been thinking of adding the manley to my arsenal

the tlm 102 is better for vocals because it eliminates alot of the low end thats not useful in vocals that the u87 pics up.

Jus bought the 102. Upgraded from a rode nt1, which I hated. It was such a boring mic and preferred my old at2020 to it 😭 Hopefully the tlm suits me 🤞🏽

Tlm 102 Is reality Better on your voice, U87 was darker but in a less clear way, had more room resonances, was too nasal. No doubt in 2016 I had a great deal even if the cutted the price today

I bought a u87 ai with my own hard earned money and I sold it after 2 weeks.

didnt find much diffrence .. as per price

the u87 is more solid in the mix but slightly

Manley sound good. I don't like this U87ai, I just replaced it by a Lewitt 1040 LCT, it's a huge step forward.

U87 sounds more natural to my ears, but the Manley SLICES through that mix. It's probably the better choice for dense mixes.

Your running a world class mic into a ok mic pre, I owned one and ran it into a Manley mic pre, the sound is untouchable

The tml is not a budget mic is the least expensive neuman has.

Honestly you performed your verse better on the Manley. I hear more confidence and consistency. Overall that doesn’t mean the mic itself sounds better than the U87. I wish you would have done this VS more evenly. I’m also not an owner of the U87, so this is completely unbiased.

u87sounds more upfront that make the vocals sound more controlled. the Manley sound open with more top end sounds like a background/chorus mic

I heard this comparison a while ago and came back to it. I started nodded my head more on the U87 especially the "been on a mission to get yo attention" part. That part made me realize i like the detail the U87 has in the lows and mids. I do like the Manley brightness. But to me it lacks detail that the u87 has. Both great mics.

The 87 sounds more natural honestly to your voice, it’s hard to say with the mix added on to it though they sound close.

The u87. Ames your vocal sound more up front and full while the Manley makes your vocals sound more open. I feel the manly allows the instruments to shiny through more while the u87 site better in the mix. Both are good tho if used in the right conditions

I like both but the Manley sit in the mix well. I think u87 sounds better and needed to be mix better. Two great mics.

Idk man, I think you'd sound better with a dynamic mic, but that's just me. You don't necessarily need a condenser microphone. Although they add some bling and cool/notoriety factor, IMHO, I don't care about that stuff. Even cheap mics like an NT1 (condenser but cheaper) can sound good and platinum albums have been recorded with... And even sm58's have been used in stuff that really blew my mind.. Different music style but Depeche Mode, Billy Idol, and Marilyn Manson (lol) all used 58's. Back to your style.. The Manley (which I also have) is a bit sibilant and has low plosives on your voice. The 87 has a but of that thing in the midrange you don't like. The Shure SM7 and SM7, paired with a really good preamp like higher shelf Neve / Heritage / BAE can soften weird midrange. You just need a great pre with lots of power for that mic (I'd skip the cloud lifters, but that's just me). I'd try one, and find your distance with a pop filter. To anyone making decisions based off ofvideos on RUclips, forget about it. Each mic will sound different on each person's voice. Chasing a mic because of an image means nothing to the resulting sound...and what you see in studio pics isn't always what was used. Like I said, there are albums where the singers are worth 50 million plus that just used an sm58.

Definitely Manley I already knew this. Because I have one and I worked on that you u 47 for many years. And I mean for like 14 years straight and I hated the vocals, but I also was working for a studio. No one in any studio that I’ve been in has the Manley but I have work on a lot of their outboard gear and I already knew that that microphone with sound great. It has a different type of sound that sits very well and most every track that I’ve done sometimes I have to switch it up to get a more warmer sound, but other than that, it’s a great investment, the best that I ever did in my life and I have seven Grammys so I know what the best sounds like

The Manley sounds a bit brighter but nothing a d esser can't fix. The Neumann sounds kind of hollow... It's definitely not the 47. But the Manley sounds better. I just hear a bad frequency somewhere in the 200-500Hz range you need to take out. But other than that it sounds like there's not too much more you have to do in order to make the vocal sit on top like it is. Keep it dude.

Would love a u87 I had a problem like this with a Tlm 103 until I added a focusrite isa 1 with Safire 14. They discontinued support for the Safire 14 haven’t been able to get the same sound out of the Tlm 103 but it immediately made the mic sound way fuller and in your face back then but made the fatal mistake I upgraded the iMac from high sierrA which was the worst decision of my life because the Safire 14 wouldn’t work. I’m finally getting the quality back with a zoom f3 going into the isa preamp. My zen go usbc was complete shti compared to the focusrite Safire 14. I have the Tlm 107 is well and the switches on that in cardioid mode if I put the high pass to the bottom it makes the mic sound like I’m coming up from under a RUclips free beat like I’m sitting in the mix rather than on top of it with out adding eq that’s with the zoom f3 in 32bit float mode and it is a complete game changer so I know what you mean with the u87 switches they are also an even better game changer.. I haven’t added any content with the zoom f3 and isa set up yet but I will be soon
