      Well of course not. This is a demonstration of the base sound used to create the effect. The radiophonic workshop manipulated that sound in various ways before it became the sound we all know.

    • @schubertuk
      @schubertuk 2 года назад

      It is difficult for casual viewers coming to this clip to appreciate that when the BBC Radiophonic workshop created sounds - they took base sounds like this piano wire being scraped, or a electronic tone generator or a metal lampshade being bashed by a hammer - and then did a HUGE amount of very laborious, and often highly manual post-processing on this recording. For instance, by speeding up, slowing down the tape, cutting the tape up and re-editing it, re-recording over itself to add echo and mixing with other sounds. It is amazing what results can come out of this process and what strange eerie, unworldly sounds can come out of mundane objects; but it came at a cost of a huge amount of time and love needing to be poured into the generation of these results.

    The original TARDIS SOUND was actually done in Ron Graingers "Radiophonic" work shop. It consisted of curtain wire, stretched almost to its li its, across two 3" nals hammered into the workbench. At each end a carbon granule microphone was placed. Then an old penny was scraped along the wire. The mocrophones were of the same type that were then used in the mouthpiece end of a standard GPO type black bakelite telephone. I know this because I was in the workshop with my dad who was a good friend of Ron. Oh, by the way, Ron did replace the mikes back into the two telephones he had borroed them from. But that was not before he had recorde the sound, via those mikes, on an old type Grundig open reel recorder.....in mono. I just thought you make be interested. Little did I know that , pushing 60 years later, I would be building my own Dalek and Tardis to house it in. The Dalek is too big to go through my front door. Great vid thanks.
