We talk about the things we love, hoping you love them too! Reviews, rankings, reminiscences, and ramblings about potentially anything, but mostly music and video games. We've been working through a yearly retrospective series starting in 1985. We also have occasional video game or pop song covers. If you're not interested in all of our content, check out our playlists for a curated list per topic.
Recollections (Arc the Lad 2 cover)
Something about this song made me think of the second movement of Beethoven's third symphony, so I leaned into that in this pretty straightforward cover.

I was really struggling with this one. Nothing I was doing was sounding right. So I finally decided, why not just intentionally mess it up even more? I can't hope to create an alt rock banger as perfect as the original, anyway.

Kraid's Hideout (Metroid cover)

I didn't do much compositionally with this cover - it's such a sparse theme (as much of Metroid's music is), so the music that's there is pretty much perfect - because it has to be. There's nowhere for the music to hide behind any fancy orchestration. So, instead of changing notes, I went hard on atmosphere for this one, which is different from my normal style, but it was really fun to do! If y...

Thanks for your list! A few of these were in consideration for mine: Vampire Weekend, Fontaines D.C, and Arooj Aftab. There are a bunch of these that I don't know, though, so I appreciate that you gave me so much to check out!
@@ILoveThisBlank you're welcome! I hope you enjoy whatever you listen to. Lots of different genres 🎶
This is a great idea! The only thing I think I could suggest is looking into soundfonts! Loads of people have complied sound fonts from old snes games for people to use in their music, maybe it would be cool to use the same instruments from the games to make it authentic? There's plenty of videos talking about how you can use soundfonts with Logic Pro, and "Musical Artefacts" is a great website for finding soundfonts (although sometimes it can be hard to find what you're looking for). As for suggestions, "Culex" from Super Mario RPG always felt to me like an homage to the final fantasy games, so that might be an interesting combination to work with.
Thanks for all of the suggestions - and Culex might be a lot of fun to write for!
you're doing an amazing job and keep at it!!!
Thank you!
"Give yourself to God. Pray to God! Praise God! You must become God's strength!" Amazing arrangement for a beautiful melody 🔥❤️
Thank you so much!
Was looking for reviews of this game and this is the most clearly worded one I found. Thank you!
Thanks for stopping by - and for the nice comment! I really appreciate it!
If I remember correctly bosses level up for every 5 or 10 levels that Alex levels (either that or they have a max level). Pretty sure it's mentioned in the strategy guid portion of the manual.
Yeah, you're right. I wish you could just power-level and steamroll endgame bosses, though - I always think it's fun to do that.
Waiting for No Need to argue!
I hope you enjoy when we get to that! We just have to get through the rest of our 1993 content first. Thanks for watching!
Excellent review! Unsure why the other commenters are so hung up calling out things that specifically bothered you and could potentially bother others. FWIW I played Lunar when I was 12 to 13 so it’s not something I tend to think about as much since the game has been with me for a long time. It’s good to hear folks talk about this as I like to reexamine my media from different angles. Can’t wait for Lunar 2!
Thanks for the comment! I think it's always worth reexamining things, because we all change as people throughout our lives. But overall, this is still a really good game! And I'm looking forward to finally being able to play Lunar 2 for more than a few hours once the new version comes out.
I'm always very surprised when I think back on how progressives were in my child versus now, they've prudes. Yes, I know, nobody ever thinks they're a prude... instead they're modest, and by just the right amount.
I’ll admit, I focused so heavily on getting soaps to watch only Alex, Kyle and Nash in the spa when I played this as a kid lol I think it was a bit unfair we never get bromides of them. 😤
Yeah! If developer aren't going to stop overly sexualizing female characters, at least overly sexualize the male characters, too! Haha.
!!!!!!❤❤❤❤ Purr bliss!!!!
Dude, like common, this type of worldview is why no one takes a chance with writing any more. Everything is so sanitized now. Also yeah Kyle is a bisexual.
@Guts-blood Everything is within the flow of Causality ...
To be fair, I don't mind sexual stuff in a game. It just bugs me that there's such a tonal shift between how the voiced characters act and how the rest of the script is written. If they'd picked one or the other, I'd be fine! (Oh, also don't sexualize under-age characters.) But thanks for your comment!
Having originally played the SCD version back in 92, and later the Complete version on PS, I actually prefer the SCD version, but that could be 12 year old me having fallen in love with these characters at the perfect age to feel heavy nostalgia about those original hours I spent with them. Looking back as an adult, I see the games flaws, but I can't help myself, I still love it dearly. It also opened me up to the entire genre of JRPGs, an obsession I would maintain many years and games later.
I wish I could have had the experience you did with the SCD version! I never had a SCD growing up - I don't think I even knew it existed until many years later. I had friends who had Genesis, Saturn, and Dreamcast, maybe a friend with a Game Gear, but I never heard anything about any of the others. I was always a Nintendo kid - until Square jumped ship, and I joined them!
@ILoveThisBlank it honestly wasn't a great system, but I'm still glad I had one exclusively because of Lunar. Great vid, hope to see more.
@@Solsev Thank you!
Surprising coincidence that I released this review yesterday, and the remaster was announced today! I'm looking forward to getting my hands on the remaster so I can play Eternal Blue, which I'd only ever rented before.
It was also a cooncidence that I've been playing and talking about Lunar games a few weeks or days before the announcement. That's why my bro told me to just watch the State of Play. I have to borrow a Lunar Legend cartridge from a cousin because he said that I was being "bias and unfair" with how I criticized the game on GBA. In the end, I've enjoyed it and finished it. Replaying the PS1 version and also trying to finish the PSP version (since I've been maintaining my PSP). Sadly I don't have the Sega CD version so my cousin told me to just use emulator before buying. And he has a point, cos the Sega CD version is a lot harder to play compare to the later remakes. Well, I've been playing different versions of Lunar Silver Star before the announcement because I don't want the series to be forgotten. But after the announcement, I'm happy that Game Arts and Gungho cared so much to release the Remastered Collection. Eternal Blue is actually my favorite. And by the way, Tempest is called Temujin or Temjin in the Japanese version. So I ended up giving him the nickname Khan when playing the Japanese version of Lunar. Because in History, Genghis Khan's birth name was Temujin before he became The Conqueror.
Love the groove of this!
Yeah, the entire OST of this game is so fun!
Nice, I love to see Maniac Mansion covers!
Thanks for stopping by! This OST really is great.
Just finish the game and THIS is a great review
Thank you - I'm glad you enjoyed it! What are you playing next?
Nice review, Michael! I absolutely loved this game. It's a love letter to Chrono Trigger which is an all-timer for me. Love the music, the battle system, the secret final ending, and Garl - the secret main character. MYGS
Thanks, Mike! Yeah, Garl is definitely the best character - he's up there with favorite game characters of all time!
This is an interesting talk about timbres! I had really only thought extensively about it with string playing, but now I want to try experimenting with my own voice haha!
Yeah, it's super fun! And sometimes it can make a big difference in what you're doing with a vocal track.
Personally im outraged, change is scary.
Hold on, let me get out my ukelele to make another apology
I will miss the old name, but I think the new name for the channel is great!
Thanks! We're excited about it, too.
Do the three 'rules' apply also to minor keys? Is this partimento/rule of the octave?
The three most common root movements do also apply to minor keys! The only thing that will be different will be the qualities of the chords. By rule of the octave, do you mean going up a fourth instead of going down a fifth? If so, yes, that does apply here. In Classical music, basses can make wide leaps pretty easily, so leaping up a sixth instead of down a third is fine, but leaping down a seventh instead of going up a step is usually less common. You tend to want to think of everything as if it's going to be sung, sort of for safety's sake, because if a voice can do it, most instruments should be able to do it.
@@ILoveThisBlank Thanks for replying. AFAIK Rule of the Octave is a collection of ways for harmonising each note of a scale applied to a bassline, popular with baroque and classical eras composers.
Saludos desde México ❤
Welcome! Thanks for watching!
Breath of Fire II is my second favorite game on the SNES after Final Fantasy VI. It's also my second favorite Breath of Fire game after V for the Playstation 2.
You have excellent taste! FFVI is my favorite game of all time. Thanks for commenting!
Hi! I was just telling a friend that I think Jimmy Eat World's "Work" is in 8/4, not 4/4, and he told me to look up the concept of hypermeter. Which, admittedly, with my very basic music theory education, I'd never touched on. The potential phrase that I'm looking at in this case is the drums in the verses. That thick "pah, pah, pah" in the snare at the end of the drum lick strikes me as being a "6, 7, 8," not a "2, 3, 4." Or is this a case of hypermeter instead? Thoughts from anyone? I know, not as groundbreaking a song as the examples in this video, but still. :)
Okay, I think I've got one. "Hoppípolla" by Sigur Rós. I feel like it has a hypermeter of 4 most of the time, but then the occasional 3? The common thread I feel is in these odd-numbered hypermeter songs is that they have this feeling of "rambling on," like my brain can't neatly organize it until I really sit and listen.
@@thegirlnextdork Thanks for your comments! I don't know either of those songs specifically, but I know both bands pretty well. When it comes to 8/4 vs. 4/4: It's more likely that it is 4/4, just the drum pattern is in a two-measure pattern. But even if it is in 8/4 (which is possible), it would likely not change the hypermeter at all - it could still be a standard 4 in both cases. As for your point about odd-numbered hypermeter feeling like they're rambling on, I hadn't thought of it that way before, but I like it! I personally feel it more as abrupt stops before the full thought is finished, but it makes sense to me that you'd hear it as rambling, because the ending is less satisfying. Great insight!
The only best mario that really got my interested was Super mario bros 3. But Super mario world was awsome too play but later on found myself going back too sonic the hedgehog games
That's interesting! I, personally, find that Sonic games don't hold my interest for long, but I didn't grow up playing Sonic games. I wonder if it would be different if I played more of Sonic than I did Mario!
Damn how any of you never owned a Sega genesis we got it when it was got released so as all the other kids and teenagers in my neighborhood
Most of all of our friends were Nintendo kids - I think we each only had one or two friends with a Genesis! It is a great console, though.
This sounds so good!!! This is the kind of music I feel like I’d hear at a church!
Thank you!
Why not let Erica play as Tails?
We couldn't be together on the day we streamed the games, so she was just watching on Zoom while I streamed. We were hoping to play all of the games together!
Really wonderful work! I always love listening to your covers even if I never played the game myself! Although I have been really addicted to stardew valley lately which has similar elements haha!
Thank you! Yeah, I put so many hours into stardew valley a couple years ago, and I still play with my niece every time I'm visiting family in Ohio.
Yasuhiro Wada recently produced Birthdays the Beginning-pretty cool sim if you haven’t tried it! Great review, fair score, and good humor, too. Keep up the great work!

Excellent video. I've catalogued quite a few songs with atypical hypermeters (as you called them) using a playlist. I wonder what Odessa said that upset you
If I write it in the comments here, people can probably avoid the hint of a spoiler: “It appears… I’ve chosen to be a woman… rather than commander of… the Liberation Army.” My issue is equating saving a child with being a woman and with not being a good leader. I'd hope that a good leader of any gender would try to save a child!
I love the amount of care you put into this ❤
Very relaxing, definitely being added to my playlist ( 1:11 sounds a lot like Don't Look Back In Anger but happy, and that's nice)

Well calling anything of Doolittle weak is kind of insulting especially knowing just how many bands are directly influenced by it. Its people like you that stood in the pixies way in the USA while the rest of the world where falling in love with them.
Man you did a very thorough review! Really wish you had B roll footage of the game, but you had me sold
