Alfa Romeo 1600GT Junior - Club Alfa Romeo track day (fixed audio)
In this episode we take the Alfa Romeo to Kinnekulle Ring for our second outing. This time to an event hosted by Club Alfa Romeo Svezia.
A completely new front suspension has transformed the car and we are picking up a bit of speed. Still getting to grips with the car and the damp conditions held us back a bit, but there is a lot of potential.
There are several places we can make up time around this track.
Using video to evaluate your driving and car performance is so valuable.
But most importantly we had loads of fun!
Some information about the car:

This is a very special Alfa Romeo 1600 GT Junior from 1974. Stepnose, GTA heritage running a fully built 2.0L twin spark engine. 850kg and 190hp should make for a fast track car once everything is dialed in. The car is in mint condition and the list of mods is long... In this episode we head to Gelleråsen for the cars first shakedown on track.

This is part 2 were we produce and mount a new reverse lockout mechanism to my Nissan 200sx S13 Time Attack car. This was our biggest problem at our last outing in the Swedish Time Attack championship TimeAttack.nu. We are running an sr20det engine with a 350z cd009 transmission and using a GKTech shifter that is designed to make this combination work in a S13 chassis.

@ 8:41 hold 3rd even if you feather the throttle. Do you left foot brake at all? There if you hold 3rd you can just dab the brakes coming into the left hander with the left foot then get back on the power. What revs do you redline at? 6800? 7400? On one of the tracks I race at I run to 7600 in 3rd for a split second when I qualify and during the races just feather it at 7400 not wasting time to change gear. Doesn't look like you have a close ratio box and have a 5. something for the rear diff 5.7 at a guess. The turn is still a bit aggressive on the tighter corners listening to the tyres struggling for grip. But you're driving really well and the car looks and sounds fantastic. What tyres are you running? semi slicks on 60% aspect ratio your aiming for around 26/7psi front 21/2psi rear (depending on spring rates).

Thanks for the feedback! Yeah, our revlimiter was set to 7400, but we where not able to rev that high. Solved now 😉. Will be in the next video, when we go back to the same track. The extended rev range and smoother power band made all the difference. As you surmised we are currently running a stock 5 speed. 👍 No left foot braking yet and like you say the turn in is a bit aggressive. After the event we went through all our footage and found a long list of improvements and in the next video that pays off. 🙂😉👍 Looking forward to more seat time next year! Do you have a similar car?

I would agree on the rev limiter - you are hitting it 500 rpm to soon, also, maybe a more race oriented cam would (though I am not sure what cam you are running) would be ok. I guess it depends on the bottom end of the engine and if it can take more revs 'safely'.... my .02 cents from the couch ;) - - great video!

Thanks for the feedback! Yeah the rev limiter was a bit of a head scratcher. But it has now been solved 🙂👍 and the engine is being rebuilt for next season. Longer stroke and better oiling to the main bearings is on the agenda. Hopefully I can make a video going through the engine.

@@techstation4903 if you’ve got springs that can handle the revs, and you have lightweight valves (hollow stem or titanium) mine are 2mm larger than stock, but are 40% lighter than stock - they cost $ though sadly :(

Nice retune on the front end. Looks hooked up. What motor (displ?) you have in the car? Sounds a little too roarty with the mic in the engine compartment. You can run more revs? We figure the stock 2L. motor OK for 7000-7200max. depending on whether fully counterweighted crank, and certainly the cams, carb chokes, etc. Looked like you had a bit of excessive caster induced weight in the steering. You can try lightening the steering with less caster. How much static camber? Lowering the rear roll center is worth a lot of improvement. If you are gonna enjoy this car on tracks alot, it's worth the effort. Racing is the best fun. Your car is beautiful. My street GTV is same color. My racer is a lightweight, white, wide body with lots of tire. Your pedals are top swing? (presumed) I cut mine off 2-3 in. from the pedal and reweld to arm at good angle, and set for much less travel, so my heel is closer to the front of the floor, 5-6 inches closer than with standard pedals; so I can fit comfortably in the car (I'm 6'-"). I use a heel stop, to brace my leg weight. The gas pedal gets hours of custom work, each car I build, to fit up to the brake pedal correctly for heel-toe. I never need move my heels from their positions on the floor while driving. You've made a GTV to be proud of. This is year 50 of my hobby with these cars: Giulia Sprint GTV, Giulia Sprint GTA, 74 GTV, 72 GTV Full race. 'Liked your video.

Hi Stephen. We are running a fully built 2L Twin spark engine and have the rev limiter set to 7200rpm, but in this outing we had trouble getting past 6800rpm which we confirmed after the days driving when we could look at the videos. That is now fixed and the higher rev limit made the power band so much wider, making the gearing fit this track so much better. (More in the next video) ; ) Yes, we had to do the same thing as you and cut all the pedals and after a couple of incremental changes we are now happy with how it turned out. What modifications would you recommend to lower the roll center in the rear? Lovely cars and so many kind enthusiasts!

@@techstation4903 I have done my own simple panhard rod. Adjustability is easily accomplished with extra holes for changing the rod’s height. Best scheme is a watts link. Performatek has a good one available for 105/115 chassis. There are others. The stock rear roll center is a little high at the pivot on the upper Diff case and causes moderate jacking. I think a way to see this is of the car rolling on its roll axis and how it’s weight migrates rearward. My GTA was sliding block. It and My current race car RCs are a couple inches below the axle.

Part of the Understeer will be coming from the aggressive turn in, Alfa's are naturally a lead dart with all the weight up front. Brake hard, then as you turn roll off the brake then at the transition of the initial turn in to the middle part of the corner be on the throttle (the art is how much throttle) this lifts the nose of the car up reduces the pushing mass of the front wheels, rotates the car. I could be talking out of my arse and find out your a 3 time rally champ and a 2 time touring car champ. But the aggressive turn in, Alfa's don't like. You'll find with a gentler turn in and quick transition to the throttle you'll have a higher entry speed into the corner.
