I bought the TRS-80 as soon as you could buy one - I bought the 16k RAM module right away. I tried basic and wanted to move a pixel across the screen. It was painfully slow. I read about Z80 machine language - I went out and bought the compiler. I wrote essentially the same code but it didn't seem to work. The pixel was on the left - and then immediately on the right. I didn't realize initially that the code executed so fast you it wouldn't light the phosphor on the screen. I spent HOURS AND HOURS on it - in fact the box it came in was my "desk" for a long time. Fond memories. I am now 66 years old - have had a long career in software development - including being in leadership for over 20 years - I am now back to writing code and I love it. I work mostly in JavaScript (React and ReactNative) and PHP. What a long strange trip it's been :).

I learned BASIC on the COCO3 back in the early 90s. I took a home study course in Microprocessor Technology, through a school that's no longer in business. I sold my TRS 80, + floppy drive+ printer & software around 1995. Shortly after, bought a computer with a 486 DX AMD processor & Internet capability.

It is so awesome to see you unbox that Laser 128. They were indeed sold at Sears, and I first learned of them by looking in the Sears catalog. I was a kid and wanted my own computer so badly. I asked my parents to get me one of these, as they were much more affordable than an actual Apple II. That Christmas I unwrapped my gifts to find out they bought me a computer, but not that one. They got me the VTech Laser Compact XT, which came in a case that looked just like the Laser 128. It was an IBM XT compatible machine, but I had never used one before as I was familiar with the Apple II from school. So I had to learn how to use MS-DOS. I never did get my Laser 128, but my family and I did end up getting a lot of use out of that Compact XT. Also, the handle of the Laser 128 can be used to lift up the back of the computer, thus giving a better angle for typing and better air ventilation.

I worked for GSI in "84 and '85. Don't remember this specific model. As an FSE, I primarily worked on photoplotters, but I remember a few large pen plotters that were used by the defense industry. I worked on a system at GE that would pen plot a wing model at full scale. The curve plot was a know gerber strength. For some reason, I thought these systems might of had a HP-1000. I used to program the boot strap from tape on a 16 bit panel... In assembler! I met Joe once as he walked through the plant in Vernon CT. He became famous in WWII for the algorithm to draw on film with light. P.S. I doubt there were any LEDs on the panels. Just small lights. GSI were heavy integrators of DEC/PDP computers.

Some of my earliest programs were written on an 820. Also used Supercalc (spreadsheet) and Wordstar (word processing) software. Wrote a space invader copy on it. No graphics though. Some models had blocky graphics characters in the upper 128 of the built in font.

1K RAM was for the CPU. Based on the published maximum resolution of 384x336, I estimate it supported interlaced video (which would have been extremely rare for the time) and had at least 8K RAM included and exclusive to the video processor. Actually, upon further speculation, I'm thinking it exclusively used sprite graphics for everything on the display, and supported up to 16 sprites on a line. That would account for the 16 character per line limit for text, and eliminate the need for a graphics RAM since graphic data could be stored in ROM.

I used to have one of these, I'm surprised you call the smaller system a 'small formfactor version' as when pugged into the Coleco it has probably the largest foot print of any computer once you have the printer and monitor on your desk? I proffered the all in one version due to the space improvement and the colour coded joystick that acts like a numeric keypad. Overall though a neigh on useless system but with a nice looking keyboard.

I just bought one of these off eBay this week. I bought my original one on my eighth birthday, the day after Christmas 1985 at Zayres in Londonderry, New Hampshire. They were clearancing out all the old 16 K machines, and we picked this one out because it says no adult supervision required. I never had a cassette deck for it so I would write programs, enjoy them for a while, and then lose them forever when it was switched off had till about 1998 when it was lost in the move.

A couple years later when I was in middle school, my teacher had one connected to a giant color TV. Writing BASIC code was really nice and the keyboard felt very nice (for my pre-teen fingers).

Cool thing is that you could run all the Apple II programs and games on it using command line. The Macintosh cannot run them. And it has tons of devices onboard that you would normally need to insert as a card to the Apple II. In fact you need to configure these out if you want to insert a traditional card. Oh and btw that Apple IIe Platinum you showed on the picture has 128k and everything to be able to run Mouse Desktop, a GUI very similar to the GS/OS or the MacOS. You should be able to use the Macintosh keyboard the original one - the M0100, the Macintosh SE use Adb mouse, with the db9 connector.

Hi, V.G. The Commodore PC10 had several BIOS versions, but the exact number is difficult to pinpoint due to various factors. Here's what we know: Early versions: Version 1.0: This was the initial BIOS for the PC10 and was likely included with the early models. Version 2.0: This version introduced several improvements and bug fixes. Version 2.05: A minor update to version 2.0. Later versions: Version 4.35: This was a significant update that added support for new hardware and features. Version 4.36: A further refinement of version 4.35, with additional bug fixes and optimizations. Version 4.36b: A beta version of 4.36 with experimental features. There may have been additional versions or revisions released, but these are the most widely known and documented. It's also possible that there were different BIOS versions for specific models or regions.

I used to play this game on my Tandy 1000HX computer with 640K RAM and it looked, sounded and performed exactly as it does on this computer! Probably because it had the same CPU clocked at 7MHz. What's worse is the Cobra Assault rifle later in the game would totally tank the performance or crash the game! I never completed this game on that computer because of the performance. I did however complete the arcade version in MAME which is a lot better, TBH!

Hi, i bought one brand new in 1987 here in Australia, it was just being phased out as something else had replaced it so it was discounted from $1999 to $1200 i purchased it lunch time, and it was not fun carrying 3 large boxed with string around each box to work, then to the train station, then the long walk home The first time i learned about RTFM, the pc did not work and had lines on the screen, so next day back to the dealer, he said bring the pc in only 0 - he could not work it out at lunch time and i said i will come back end of the day. The dealer was ok but cranky as he spent 2 hours then had to ring USA for the help desk - turns out that video card was set to CGA colour and i had the green screen so the jumpers on the red switch section on the video card had to be changed - USA told him RTFM , he changed them and it was find. Later i went back to buy some software and he remembered me and tried to charge me for the international call - it was pricey close to $20 Mine was basically identical but had the base 512k, i do not recall any software at the time that needed the full 640, i used wordstart, word perfect, multiplan, visicalc - none of the spreadsheets would come close tho the cells i use to day in excel ( hmm i think they had something like 256 cell limit anyway back then - next reached it ) Use a combo program called PFS first choice Also many games ran on the hercules, i had also simcga and another similar utility that acted like a buffer / converter and many cga games ran on the green screen - the standard commodore screen was 12 inched from memory, not quite the full 14 inches in the offices NEC's with the multisync monitors but the text was super crisp and sharp Motherboard has a unique round power supply connector Great machine, 2 x 260 floppies, i sold it 3 years later and bought a generic clone XT turbo with 2 x 1.2m floppy - it seemed like a big jump Regards George
