The Wednesday Play - Son of Man (1969) by Dennis Potter & Gareth Davies
Full of the woes of working class life. Sad ... and true. (We could have done without the toilet shaving scene.)
That was so moving! Thankyou so much for giving us this.x
The building used in Downtown Abby????
When Andrew Davies created his own screenplays instead of adapting other peoples novels! What a loss to TV drama! I want to see Heartattack Hotel and series 2 of A Very Peculiar Practice. Are they on a VHS in landfill?
Is Phil who plays George still about I need to contact him?
Thanx vg
Talking of Gamekeepers, that scene on Oaks Lane where the lad goes into the woods with the kitten…we used to call that wood the ‘Private Wood’. There was a gamekeeper who patrolled that area that we called ‘Baggy Pants’ because he used to wear plus fours. He had a very deep voice and was always ‘nicking’ me and my mates when we were in there or around Greasborough Dam bird nesting 🙈
We never forget that first feeling of love that makes us feel alive ❤
Beautiful ❤
Nipsey Hussle sent me to the book and now to the movie.
Whether Arafat knew it or not he was fighting against European Zio-Nahtzee and the bribe taking imperialist white supremacists war mongers of Washington DC. Hats off to Vanessa Redgrave.
Excellent play- great performances. Thanks for uploading.
So happy to find this! A Scots Quair is another favourite by Grassic Gibbon. 🏴
Can't believe I watched that till the end !
A wonderful film, thank you.
Risk. Great memories Jellied chicken not so Great, but we were slim!
I remember when this was first shown on tv. What a couple of drips! 😂
49.45 vera duckworth👌👍great play and great music takes me back to being a child in Liverpool 🧐😉
Great play absorbing thought provoking.
Much better quality than the DVD which I paid £30 for off Amazon!!
How marvellous to find this - and hear the beautiful Chopin Étude - both of which first captivated me in 1966, as a 17 year old. Thank you. Simon Ward was such an underrated actor and a wonderful cast 🙏
28:49 this is what you're looking for
The only thing I don't like about this great movie is Alan Arkin hamming it up. He should have played straight
Classssic
Nice Alfa Romeo Mr Otway has. This is a great play. Deep and meaningful. Excellently acted by both leads.
Don't waste your time!
I listened to the BBC radio play last night and had to find a film version. Wonderful, brilliant play. I love it.
Really enjoyed thank you!
I saw this play when it was first broadcast in 1966. I've never seen it again until today, but I've remembered it all these years. Felicity Kendal completely charmed me (of course), and I felt that her character nicely caught the spirit of the swinging sixties. Amazing to find that after 58 years, it is very much as I recall it. Memory is an amazing thing! Thank you for somehow finding it and uploading it.
I was 14 years old then and born in Gourock Scotland next to Greenock where this was filmed. it's like traveling back in time watching this even down to the 99 teabags etc.
Town planners are the social criminals of the 20th century - the so-called 'slum clearance' didn't just demolish houses but communities as well. The wasteland of tower-blocks is the result.
Spoiler: It seems the synopsis for this is inaccurate, I know it's from IMDB but she doesn't get a chance to "snap and fight back".
Why are all these plays so low resolution?
That's the highest quality they're available in. The BBC hasn't reaired or released them in better quality so its all we have to work with.
Yep, this is how I remember school. My German wife doesn't believe me that is how it was. I got slapped around by both pupils and teachers on the first week. First day even.
Thanks for the high quality transfer!
This is creepy as hell and I love it.
Some great stuff here, I have a lot more PFTs etc you might want to add, how can I contact you?? Also looking for City Sugar, Sunday Drama from 1978...the search goes on!!!!
You can contact me directly over discord. My username is verdoux
Charming, absolutely charming, from beginning to end. Thank you for the film, PFF.
I am on holiday in Canada and wanted to watch a film which was representative of Canada in some way and found this one, and it was absolutely wonderful. 💙
💖💙Terrific play. She should've ditch her boyfriend several times over! What a manbaby mummy's-boy control freak. She could've done soo much better.
Remember watching the intro. Finally watched it. Very moving
I was 10 years old when this was broadcast, and I watched it. Usually, 'Play for Today' went right over my head, I was too immature to appreciate the plays, so I found them dull, boring and perplexing in the extreme, and I usually just mentally switched off or found somethin else to do. But not with this play. It struck far too close to home, and had me mesmerized - especially Phil Davis's powerful, commanding performance. His taunts of 'farty, farty, pooh, what a scortcher!, Go on do another one!' aimed at that bullying oaf of a PE teacher still ring in my ears after all these years, as do the PE teacher's retort, 'all he needs is a kick in the balls'. Extremely powerful and impressionable stuff. How Barry Keeffe managed to hit the nail on the head like that - the real actual unvarnished truth of the UK's sh*tty comprehensive schools of the 1970s, I will never know. Should be required viewing for our public school educated political class. This is as close to the truth as a work of fiction will ever get. Nay, it is *truer* to the reality of the 1970s comprehensive school than the lived experience ever was.
Great depiction of gangsta life on the Clyde coast in the late 1970s … Greenock / Port Glasgow - if anything - was worse than Glasgow coz there weren’t any posh people anywhere.
Charlie Fairhead as Hair Bear
Sadly there wasn't much in the way of jobs in civvy street for them. Commissionaires and that was about it.
Seeing a image of Britain in the 70’s is great I was tiny then
Thank you for this and so much else., I really enjoyed this one.
Ruth from raising damp
Holy mackerel! What a cautionary tale this is. First-rate acting by all.
