make sure the shape(rectangle) is on top of the design that is to be clipped

They are actually lines not dots. Use direct selection tool to edit the shape.

U can use the blend tool and if u don't have that i think u are using a version of illustrator that do not have blend related stuff ____________________________________ LOCATION: the 4th last icon along with the eyedropper tool.(if tools are in one column then around 7th last) STEPS: 1. Select both shapes. 2. Use the blend tool and click both of them one after the other. 3. The shapes will blend And for blending options double tap on the blend tool and you will get them

1. First select both shapes. 2. Or check if the letter G (or the letter you used) is just a path not a closed shape. 3. Or make sure have done the blend part correctly. If these do not work tell me more about the problem.

Check the blending mode + the colors used. I guess giving black to the other line and using blend mode from the light/screen groups will work.
