Anatomy of a Bad Speeding Ticket
The subject was accused of going 60 mph, based on radar, when the limit changed to 55 mph. Police followed the subject for 5 miles, during which time the speed limit changed from 75 to 65 to 55 mph. The officer activated his lights almost immediately past the 55 mph speed limit sign.

    32-years in the business and don't recall a single redlight "shaver" being cited. Of course you'll hear all sorts of one-sided hearsay tales you can file away with the "know a guy who knew a guy who got a ticket for 1-mph over the speed limit stories," but cops drive too and know that some redlights are timed so poorly that you either have to dynamite the brakes or run the light at the first yellow. To get a ticket for a redlight you have to bust the intersection well into the red cycle, usually bad enough to cause cross traffic to slow. A shaver might get stopped just to see if he's sober or because car looks like a maggot wagon, but not cited.

    I agree with everything you pointed out, but you left a lot of important information out too. Firstly, police do not NEED radar to give you a speeding ticket, they are trained to judge speed by eye and only "confirm" with radar readings. Also, police vehicles' speedometer are certified accurate every 6 months so simply driving next to, or behind a vehicle and matching speed (called pacing) will give an accurate measurement. And finally, the officer pulled out into traffic well before initiating the traffic stop, most likely to observe the driver and/or passengers for other probable cause to initiate a traffic stop. The speed limit at the location the officer was stopped at may have also been 55mph before changing to the higher limit so they may have issued the speeding ticket referring to the original measurement from when the officer was stationary. I can not say for sure any of that last part is true based solely on this video, but hopefully your source for information was more than just this dash cam video, or you too are doing nothing more than speculation, same as I have.

    • @donaldsawicki6866
      @donaldsawicki6866 Год назад

      In addition to the video, evidence included the patrol car speedometer reading when the officer stated the defendant was allegedly speeding. Note, the patrol reading and many other parameters are on the raw video submitted to the court, but edited out for the public version. Other evidence included the officers' sworn deposition, officer report and notes, and information on the ticket. I did NO SPECULATION, I only used hard documented evidence, just the facts. The Judge agreed and dismissed the case WITH PREJUDICE. Dismissing a case with prejudice is rare and more powerful than just a dismissal. The case cannot be refiled and new charges cannot be filed. There was no justification for issuing a ticket, let alone wasting court time and resources.

No crap on a road that should be 50mph. It's a straight-line 4 lane road with no intersections or foot traffic. He never showed me the radar reading and I've been pulled over actually speeding like 20mph over and the guy showed me my speed on the radar gun and asked if it was correct. He also only wrote the ticket for 5mph over because it was a petty stop at the end of an interstate where it goes from 55 to 40.

    Quite simply an occasion of "double bounce" when the signal is striking two objects together and the two speeds are calculated as one speed. This is easily detected when something that should be travelling 50 mph is being calculated at 100 mph. This is why the radar is a tool that corroborates the officer's opinion the driver of the vehicle was speeding. Nothing to see here...move on.

    Vehicles are moving faster than the readout indicates. That is a very sharp approach angle which makes the radar less accurate; of course it's inaccurate in favor of the motorists. If you angle the antenna too sharply in the moving move, it drops the patrol speed and falsely adds the difference onto the target speed. Of course I reckon you know all that.

  • @mnpd3
    @mnpd3 3 года назад

    Anyone who uses traffic radar is aware that the fan can be detected by inside windshield deflection. You move the antenna, or just keep the fan speed below any possible violation speed. Or ignore it, since the fan speed disappears when a vehicle appears. Traffic radar locks onto the strongest signal, and no reflected fan can compete with a vehicle . Last, radar is not used to determine speed. The eye is; the radar only confirms what is being visually observed. It's part of the "tracking history."

  • @Sky1
    @Sky1 3 года назад

    The radar is hitting a large vehicle coming towards the patrol car, the radar ricochets off a truck on the oncoming lane, reflects back to the first vehicle then back to the patrol car, it measures the closing distance of the two vehicles instead of the real speed. This is why cops listen to the Doppler audio so they can immediately rule out false hits like that. I think the newer units filter that stuff out

    This would make a good physics experiment! What would the displays show if the gun was placed on the passenger seat and pointed at the wall under the dash while the patrol car is traveling at 60 mph? According to mathematicians, the left and right displays would both be dark because the speed of the wall is zero relative to the gun. But, according Einstein and the Doppler Effect, BOTH the target display AND the patrol display would show 60 mph.

    You’re getting inaccurate readings because of how you’re parked. You’re supposed to be parallel with the lane in which you’re monitoring on the right side of traffic, meaning the opposite side of the road in this video. That’s why there’s front & rear antennas. Police radar has a “TARGET” and “FAST” box, target displaying the target vehicles speed and fast displaying a trailing car that is traveling at a faster or slower speed. I see this one doesn’t have that, meaning it’s probably combining the speeds of 2 cars instead of giving them separate readings. Radar is extremely accurate when used right and is easy to calibrate

    Errors of Photo Radar. How many people know what angular deviation is? The use of Radar to calculate the speed of a vehicle on a highway is quite accurate on a straight line highway, but when a radar beam is place on a vehicle traveling in a curved section of a highway, the reading can be as high as 30 percent off. The province of BC conducted tests in 2008 which showed that a radar gun placed at a 45 degree angle to the speed of a vehicle traveling at 100 km / hour, actually reads 115 to 120 km / hr. I actually participated in one of those tests. Last year I moved from British Columbia to Alberta and I've got a vehicle equipped with a dash cam camera. Last week I experienced traveling in Devon Alberta in a 30 km zone at the speed 35 km/hr, as recorded by the dash cam. I was pulled over and received a ticket from a Town CPO where the officer wrote in the radar speed to be 44 km / hr. An error of 9 km / hr. I traced back the location of where the radar was used at and sure enough the officer was shooting his radar at an angle of 30 to a 60 degree angle. Such a high deviation angle gave the officer a false speed reading. I covered 390 meters in exactly 40 seconds. When you do the math, 390 meters in 40 seconds calculates to exactly what my dash cam indicated, that being 35 km per hour. Because British Columbia has plenty of curved roads, there were 1000's of Radar readings that were way above the actual speed of the vehicle which was traveling within the correct speed limit. Many photo radar operators know about this angle deviation, and will purposely place themselves close to a curved highway area and collect false radar readings so as to increase their earnings and the profits they illegally collect for their local government, an act that robs funds from motor vehicle drivers. This act is better know as a "Cash Cow Profit" for the government that allows it to operate.

    While this is entertaining to watch, we don't know if this radar unit was calibrated correctly, recently passed certification, or defective. Yes, all humans and machines will make errors, but if the officer is properly trained and the unit passed it's calibration test (at the beginning of each shift), errors will be minimized. We cannot tell from the video if there are high voltage power lines,TV/Radio tower, or airport nearby. These can induce interference with the radar unit.
