Yeah, but then as now, the gore and brutality amounts to -- if you'll pardon the expression -- a dick-measuring contest. "Can you top this?" Problem is, if you strip away the gore, is there a substantial enough story to stand on its own? I'm an admirer, and owner, of Fulci's The Psychic (also known by my preferred title of Sette note in nero). There is violence there, and gore, but also an interesting, complex story that stands on its own. The 80s was a dumber decade, though, what with all the slashers, and everyone had to keep up with the body count.

I just watched it last night. It's the best adaptation of Dr. Moreau I've ever seen. It's not faithful, which is good because the novel is a bit of a snoozefest and I don't know why it gets remade so much. But I was surprised at how good Twilight People was. It was fast paced and had some great performance.

The negative attitude around the Terrifier movies feels like horror hipsters hating them because they became really successful.

Its not overrated at all. Its been a vision of damiens since late 2000s. Terrifier 1 and all hallows eve were niche, terrifier 2 is when it hit mainstream.

For some reason, when Art pulled out that gun, I just cracked up. It just came out of nowhere. Definitely a nasty film. I dug it. I still need to check out part 2 & 3.

I love this movie. The two main girls are so funny and to me, very likable. Like you, I wasn't a fan of the final girl and wished Tara was the final girl. I think the biggest reason the Terrifier movies are doing so well is David Howard Thornton's depiction of Art the Clown is pretty darn terrific. What a hilarious yet totally evil character! Original and effective. I agree this one is mean spirited to some degree but nowhere near like the second one, which actually was distasteful to me; not a fan of the 2nd one. (And apparently the third is also pretty mean, so we shall see. Lacking the two main actresses from the first one and the gritty feel, I doubt I'll like 3 as much as the original either.) I also agree w/ what you said about how 80s movie characters aren't unlikable. In fact I find so many 80s movies refreshingly enjoyable to watch BECAUSE the characters are so likable. I can't stand new movies, the characters are annoying just like most ppl are these days. lol.

Even though it’s simple and brutal, I think the Terrifier movies has breathed new life into the Slasher genre. Showing that the fans of the gore are still there and want more. The only issue is that it can and probably will lead to writers and directors going further and further with the violence in order to one up each other, or themselves, with every movie. Which could result in stuff like the Wrong Turn franchise. This at least has characters that feel believable and likable
