from GL Alumni newsletter, 3/12/24: John White Completes His Seven Part Series on Grass Lake Garage Bands Researched and Compiled by John White Doug's Note: Thank you, John, for your attention to detail and your willingness to commit your time to this project. While I was aware of the many bands because of my relationship with Dave Sherwood, I didn't know the particulars. John's series has been extremely interesting. On July 6, 1957 an event took place that changed the face of rock music forever. On that day Paul McCartney met John Lennon at a Liverpool church festival and asked to join Lennon’s band “The Quarrymen.” A few years later they would become the Beatles and pop music was never the same. A parallel incident, though of perhaps slightly lesser significance, occurred in 1968 at George Long Elementary School in Grass Lake. Jim Libey (GLHS ’72), his sister Sue (GLHS Class of ’74) and Harold Curtis (’72) had begun playing music together and entertained students one day that year at Long School. Afterwards they were approached by Sue’s 6th grade classmate Cindy Gadbury (’74), who asked if she could join the trio as a lead singer. The group agreed and a band was formed that would become known as “The Lake Valley Four.” Jim was the guitarist, Sue played drums and Harold played both accordion and keyboard, providing back-up for Cindy. Unlike their predecessor garage bands, The Lake Valley Four leaned to country music and soft pop tunes. Partly because of their youth but also due to their proficiency at playing this unique musical genre, the group was in great demand. They played many local country jamborees (see photo below from The Midwest Jamboree in Hanover-Horton, a competition they won) and for several years entertained regularly at Fitchburg Wilderness Park outside of Stockbridge. They were also prominently featured during Grass Lake’s momentous centennial celebration in the summer of 1971. Amazingly, The Lake Valley Four opened for Johnny and June Cash at the Jackson County Fair in 1969 and later opened for country music legend Ray Price. And then there were the records! The band recorded their first 45 featuring the song “Running Bear” which even if it did not enjoy widespread sales, found its way on to the jukeboxes at Kugler’s Dairy Bar and The Village Inn. It remained at the latter establishment for many years, as discovered by Cindy Gadbury (now Amyot) during a visit long after the group disbanded. The Lake Valley Four would go on to record a total of four 45 singles (Click on link to hear the group’s rendition of “Everybody’s Talking at Me”). ruclips.net/video/WAUvGiSusUU/видео.html As with all good things, the Lake Valley Four eventually came to an end, primarily because Cindy wanted to enjoy a more normal high school experience for her senior year. The fact that Cindy felt like a road-weary music veteran at the age of 17 illustrates how young the group members really were. She never lost her love for music however and has been leading a Christian worship band for over forty years in Kansas. Jim Libey stayed in the music business as well, playing with popular country music artist TG Sheppard among other ventures. For those of us who remember them, Grass Lake’s longest running band, The Lake Valley Four will always hold an endearing place in our hearts.
