Some of the reasons of the fall of Grunge ? The whole genre gentrified itself during the mid-90's. A lot of musicians became exactly what they used to criticize before and never really took responsabilities. If the mainstream medias don't talk about the fall of grunge, I think it's because there's an "ideological" proximity between mainstream musical press and Grunge. Beyond that, with hindsight, we can see now some similarities between Grunge and the whole current woke culture. Basically, Kurt Cobain defined perfectly the SJW and was one of the first soy boys. If there's a reason to blame grunge, it's for this stuff.

This is probably the best description and definition of grunge music. While punk, blues, hard rock and metal tend to be much more well-defined, grunge is a bit of a mash-up. It was more a social movement / philosophy towards punk, rock and metal fusion. Soundgarden were a heavier grunge band that bordered on metal at times (like "Flower" and "Jesus Christ Pose" are fairly heavy). Pearl Jam were really an alt rock band, stylistically speaking. Nirvana were more closely related to Sonic Youth and The Pixies than any of their more prominent grunge contemporaries. So, defining grunge from a purely musical perspective doesn't quite work. But if you define grunge as punk / hard rock / alt rock / metal fusion with dark, cynical, contradictory lyrics and a focus on sounding raw (avoiding slick production and often being anti-reverb and similar effects), it starts to make sense. If you hung out with your friends wearing cheap clothing, getting wasted and caring about social issues (but not doing much about it because you were more a nihilist than an activist), then you were probably grunge. If you recorded simple rock music with shitty recording equipment, you were probably grunge. It makes a lot more sense now because I listen to all the grunge bands and hear so much variety that they don't really sound like a single musical genre. And that's because they never were. They were a single musical movement.

I was 16 when Grunge exploded. It was magical. This music was for us Gen X kids who had Baby boomer parents who only cared about was work. We are angry teens. I would roam the streets in anger and Vandalize cars and buildings while listening to these grunge bands. The best times of my life were in HS. I hated hair bands before grunge. I will never forget one important day for me. I was at a HS party and Nirvana smells like teen Spirit played. The whole room became quiet. Everyone was bobbing their heads and at the end of the song. One guy jumps up and yells” What the fuck was that?

I am in my mid 50s and have seen numerous popular music genres come and go over the years. Disco, hair metal, grunge, whatever. The thing that ALWAYS kills it is oversaturation. A band becomes really successful and the record companies all go "FIND ME THE NEXT (band name here)" Then they go on their little signing frenzy, gobbling up every clone and clone-of-a-clone with at least one radio friendly song. 4-5 years of that in heavy rotation and Johnny and Susie music consumer are pretty well sick of it all. Even the original acts' popularity suffers. Rinse, Repeat

Grunge at its core-concept made it extremely hard to sustain in the mainstream. I'm amazed it lasted as long as it did. -Its anti-rock star image made it extremely hard for bands after the "Drab Four" (Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, and Pearl Jam) to make it big without seeming like phonies or bandwagoners. -Unlike hip-hop in the 90s, the grunge-sound was really hard to corpratize, not just because the bands were so anti-corporate. Its gritty and sour sound would be a turn-off to most people unless the vocalist is especially talented like Eddie Vedder or had a sense of conviction like Kurt Cobain; and the songwriting felt personal. No way Motley Crue or Warrant would ever write a song like "Polly" or "Jeremy". -The genre's projection of "realness" caught up to it in the worst possible way. The death of Kurt Cobain felt like an endpoint; when grunge gets "too real". The gap between art and artist, closed

Back in those days we were rejecting the boomer narrative of power and wealth. They spit on their hippie ideals and became power hungry. They sold off our future to the Chinese starting in the mid 80s. Top that off boomers controlling the music industry and giving us crap hair band music which ignored the plight, reality and identity of Xers who saw us as a threat to their generation. The boomers wanted to stay young and relevant forever so they alienated GenXers. Grunge was spring of youth they couldn’t restrain. But as you said even those grunge band sold out to. Cobain became depressed even more when he realized he was part of the boomer money making machine.

Excellent point. it should also be mentioned that the country was suffering from what I've heard called the "Reagan/Bush Hangover" by 1991. In pop culture, the 80's are portrayed as a non-stop party, but in real life, there were a lot of problems that were ignored during the decade and left to fester until they exploded. It was akin to drinking yourself into a stupor for a long time to escape your problems. Eventually, you're going to sober up and feel like crap. I don't think people really remember the 90's or are employing the "nostalgia filter". It was a grim time, the early 1990’s at the tail-end of the Reagan Revolution during the Bush Sr. presidency. (Especially for somebody graduating high school). Rodney King and the subsequent LA riots had taken place. Crack cocaine had ravaged the cities. Gang violence was high. The three-strikes law was coming into legislature because crime was so high. OJ had gone on trial and race-relations were a public spectacle. Clinton had not yet pulled the economy out of the early 90’s slump. The former Soviet Union was in a state of anarchy and nobody knew who would lay hands on the nuclear weapons. That period from 1992-1995 was quite grim and dismal.

I think another obvious factor that killed off grunge was overexposure just like hair metal play the number one vidio hits to death on mtv and you pretty much wreck a bands image of not selling out. And the question nobody seems to ask is if the grunge acts were against being commercial why allow themselves to go on mtv and do headbangers ball etc isn’t that classed as selling out?

    • @moisesberducido1248

You got the point! Grunge was supossed to be an anti-system music, and suddenly, by a short time, it was pushed day and night by MTV and the big disco industry as the new mainstream. It was intrusive and fake, even more, I suspect Kurt Cobain and all the Grunge stars that killed themselves were unprepared to the fame. Grunge and the original 70's Punk were contra-culture movements and non-mainstream music that suddenly were openly pushed by the big discographics. And that was the sad part, big discographics MURDERED those generes.

@@moisesberducido1248 your abasoultily right I think again the point that’s missed about bath glam metal and grunge is that they themselves probably didn’t realise how much of an impact there vidios wouod hace on those generations of kids while yes glam metal later on became more about having a good time at the beginning you did have bands that were more in line with I suppose you might call it glam plank so they took there image from the New York dolls and kiss added in punk and metal and you Get some pretty raw sounding band twisted sister being the main creators of that then after that motiey crue. I discovered the grunge genre in 1989 with the band Mudhoney I was blown way by its success by the 1990’s It was like a breath of fresh air, but like a lot of things that All seem cool from the outside.become less intriguing, less interesting and a lot more darker when one goes deeper into it. I saw many friends and acquaintances become junkies ending up homeless or in jail not to mention Kurts death which I had seen coming for months . I came to hate the G word with a passion by decades end.

It did seem that grunge had a more negative effect on people then perhaps was realised while I saw grunge as the spokes music for next generation of angry kids and teens and it was what was despeatly needed at that time like you said a breath of fresh air but I saw that grunge was just gonna be another overplayed saturated music that now rarely gets played. Kurts death while one of the most saddest in history given the fact there is still much speculation as to if he actualy took his own life or not as tgere are unanswered questions regarding that. I also have had friends who’ve been addicted to drugs honkers jailed etc so I have every sympathy with your friends I hope they have found the right path again

SHOSTAKOVICH STUDIES 2 EDITED BY Pauline Fairclough University of Bristol Music and Soviet Power 1917-1932 by Marina-Frolova Walker & Jonathan Walker Shostakovich, a Life Remembered by Elizabeth Wilson There's three interesting reads on Shostakovich that I enjoyed. In reference to his influence, there was a consistent push and pull between Stalin's favor. The party often was caught in the midst of in-fighting based on what was least likely to get someone put in the Soviet prisons. In the early years post revolution, musicians formed Unions and groups that involved much of their time trying to guide and craft the new nation, and composers like Shostakovich were guideposts. His "failures" and more controversial pieces created space for response and course corrections, but in truth, by the 1930's, Stalin's ire had turned more directly to the music of the Soviet Union, beyond even the literary crackdown, and no one was safe from his seemingly illogical path of keeping the public in fear with government regulation. Stalin's approval was regularly irregular, and after his death, Shostakovich went on to present much of the material he had written, like his 13th, which honored those slaughtered by Stalin's rule. Thanks for the comment, and keep enjoying early Soviet music! It's a fascinating subject!
