R these the kids of lenient “millennial” parents? Wondering how they will “fit in” w the rest of society when they get older. Doesn’t seem like they will pass college entrance exams so their job options will be limited. Do they have skills to become entrepreneurs? Or will they just continue to depend on their parents and live at home?
In Poland it is truly rare to find a school with so many genuine smiles! We have compulsory curriculum, so all school are democratic in name only! Smashing a cardboard carton is not happening in Polish schools, and yet I loved such games as a kid
Love this so much ❤ Made me wanna go visit PFS!
4:41 kicking bottles in the streets? wow! that's freedom! In Poland kids would be detained, parents informed, and the teacher who allowed this anarchy might be in trouble. Perhaps even the principal's job might be at stake! :) ... It's nice to be a kid out there! :)
Interesting video. Really struggling to see how this is remotely good or productive for the students but to each their own I guess
Lmao the more I watch the video the more preposterous this school gets. When asked about it the kids seem like they're almost holding back a smile at how ridiculously lax the school is. Like they can barely believe their good fortune and they don't want the secret to get out. Obviously the kids are going to love it, they get to chill with their friends all day. University, trade school, or any job or career is going to be a rude awakening for them, having learned little to nothing, no work ethic and raised under the philosophy that their time is their own and they have the right to do whatever they want with it. Seems like a formula for success.
@@attikaifinch while you are absolutely correct that it's harder to decide your own educational path & be responsible for your own choices, you might be interested to know that while many democratic school students wait a year or two before entering college or a trade school, 90% attend some form of post-secondary schooling, and 80% of them get into their first choice. The reality is that all human kids are highly motivated to learn the tools of their culture, and the tools of our culture are media, technology, & education. Left to their own instincts they will find their way to what's important to them. At the school my kids go to, which is very similar, there are kids taking calculus & English & cooking classes, all at their own request. There are also kids who spend all day every day playing video games or making art. The point is - they learn how they learn best and when and if they decide to chase an ambition, they can do it very successfully. It's worth noting that these kids are very well aware of the pressures the world can throw at a person and they make choices about how much they do or don't want to engage. Plenty of democratic school grads have gone to ivy league schools & even won academy awards. Their choices will lead to many different places, but as they are already places that the kids are interested in, the self-selection is appropriate to me at least - I would rather my kids know themselves & be in pursuit of their own goals than successful by someone else's definition.
Loved the editing on this one! I also love how directly you guys show what is going on, no convincing or strong angles, just hearing what the kids think :)
Thank you Harry! Our goal is always to let people come to their own conclusions about things, trying to make the films as "self-directed" of a viewing experience as possible.
Wow awesome job! This is great. So cool to see y'all continuing the project. Much love <3
Thank you!! We're very excited to see what y'all have been working on too :)
This episode was so fun to edit, lots of fun to be had with this much jazz!
Hi Ben
I know I'm a little late on this but YAY, first episode! What a pleasant glimpse into a day with the Grand Rapids Flying Squad. Seems like a great group. Makes me want to start one in my town, too.
Thank you!! The more Flying Squads the better :)
Imagine young people being allowed, surely, but more so accepted and supported to exist, day to day, in the very same spaces that they already inhabit. And then, consider that, if life-learning is the truest education, they are right where they have every business to be. 🙂✊ Also, just yay to Ben and Gen and yay to Annie Friday!!
Exactly! 💛
Can you imagine being around as a fly on the wall (or brick), getting to see all the early days of Flying Squads unfold? 🪰😃 In that vein, how cool it would be if a biopic were made some day with such events in mind! It would be another access point, in parallel to what you both have accomplished here.
Hopefully these kids know how to read!
Thanks for sharing. I'm a mum of 3 children, a 16 year, a 12 yr and a 5 yr olds. Always looking to learn from others , to improve their journey of learning.
This looks great!
Congratulations 🎉
Nice to get a peak into this awesome group! More please! :)
More coming soon :)

Thank you Hannah! :)
Awesome work! Helpful interviews! 💖🙏🏻💖
Thank you, we're so glad you enjoyed it!
Great job, folks! Good camera work, sound, interviewing, and especially (the hardest part for me) film editing! I, too, have sometimes felt frustration when adults have been unreasonably impatient with my children. We adults sometimes impulsively hurl our own childhood traumas at vulnerable youngsters. Good job working to counteract that, Mama!
Thank you so much! Holding space for young people to be themselves is such important work.
So cool that you two are doing this!! :-) Congratulations on the first episode!🎉🐦
Amazing project!!
This looks like a great group!
They were awesome! There are many other Flying Squads across the United States, as well as in Romania, Canada, and Mexico. Maybe there's even a group near you...

"Wait a second, these people are human beings and maybe they should be making decisions that matter for themselves instead of just following whatever the adults say." (2:41) An essential perspective that SDE community entails--and the goal for what could be the normal outlook more widely. Oh and another great addition to the project!
Yes! We hope one day this is the widely shared perspective. We're glad you liked the interview :)
Excellent!❤
Thank you!
I'll be honest (Ben can attest to it over on his channel): I loved it! Wow, the film, the filming, the cuts, the editing, the dual narration, the music, the honesty, forthrightness, and courage, the passion and hopefulness that becomes subtly evident. So far, the project looks to be an adventure and, accordingly, a special journey of life-learning. Enjoy, take your time, and keep at it, you two!
Thank you for your kind words Michael. We're really looking forward to sharing the rest of this project!
I look forward to seeing the rest of your journey!
