Hi, just wanted to clarify something here. It seems that when you installed XFCE with GDM3, it logged into GNOME as opposed to Xfce. Just wanted to inform that if you need Xfce, choose lightdm. Thanks 😊 Though, the VNC connection seems to use Xfce.
