The MONSTER HUNTER movie is the worst ADAPTATION ever
I did say I'd talk about this movie eventually. Specifically about its qualities as an adaptation, because a million people have already told you how this movie regularly sucks.

The 20th Anniversary Monster Hunter Retrospective

Hope you enjoy my deep dive into my Favorite series! This video doubles as an ultimate retrospective of the Monster Hunter series and a look into both beloved and obscure items of the franchise. Feel free to use this to sleep to or whatever you'd like. Also RUclips won't let me add links at the end so look below the Chapter select for my links. Chapters 0:00 Intro 1:00 Personal history 6:39 His...
I love this
Love this when I first saw it and still do. Saw it twice on release I liked it that much as a child. Genuinely never understood the hatred for it, had plenty of action and Emmerich did try characterisation here which wasn't too bad. I go back to it every so often and it's always a good time. Nice to see some love for it.
1:09 Godzilla’s Revenge would’ve been another example
I played the original PS2 Monster Hunter when it released. It was amazing. Epic music, grand locals, cool armor and weapons. But it was hard as hell....until I played online. I missed the PSP versions until I moved to Japan and played MHP3. That game got me back into MH. Since then I've played every game I could get my hands on.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who likes this movie.
I actually played Monster Hunter Online for a brief time.
No way! How was that?
@@AlbaAlbtross The game itself was great. Despite the game not being made by Capcom, they really nailed it. Monster behavior, weapon attacks. It was all solid. And it even did some parts better than world. Like when you can look up the pictures of monsters and where their weakpoint are, Online had more distinct weakpoints than world and it was better communicated. However, it was all in Chinese ofc. There is/was an English patch. But after some time Tensent decided to get rid of those pesky foreigners and encrypted their files which made the english patch almost impossible. Though some smart guys figured it out and the patch came back after a while. But you needed a new version of the patch each update, and it did not translate everything. The hubworld was kind of weird. You had several hubs, like villages, but you would progress to other hubs once you defeated a certain monster and leveled up enough. At least that is how I remember it. Oh, yes you had levels, they did not gave any benefits in terms of damage or so, but you needed to gain certain thresholds to progress in the game. There was an auction house where you could sell or buy items, including monster parts, so you could probably make sets of monsters you never fought, but I am not sure since I only ever sold parts. Aside from the language problems I already talked about, there was another big problem I had that made me quit. High ping and constant disconnects. Unlike in world where you can play the game offline no problem, this game was actually an MMO. It was luckily very client based, so even with a 400+ ping you could play smoothly, until your ping got too high. I would notice my ping because of damage numbers (yes it had those before world did) when my ping was high, the monster would act normally but I would see the damage numbers some time after the attack occurred, if the numbers where missing completely a short while after the monster would most of the time stop responding/ moving. Problem was that the game was still running on the server, with other words when you come back you probably had carted in the meantime. And sometimes the game would kick you altogether which sucked if you where in a 40 minute hunt and then lost all progress because of that. There was no reconnect feature. Because of that I did play hunting horn and just played the healing song over and over again in hopes to survive despite the lag. It sometimes worked on short lag spikes but not on the longer ones. Oh, and another thing, because this was a f2p Chinese game there were a lot of really stupid cosmetic items in the game. So most players you see were just running around in pikinis lol. Oh and it had Monsters that were unique to that game, and those were really cool to fight, but way harder and faster most of the time than the og Monsters. I wish this game could have had a release in the west, with english text and on servers with decent ping.
As someone who only got into Monster Hunter a few months ago, this helped understand everything so well. I adore your in depth overview of the franchise! Thank you so much for looking at Monster Hunter merch, besides Fangamer it was actually hard to know where to look.
Glad you enjoyed it! Comments like these make me so happy 🥺
Also with Paul WS Anderson's movies I wouldn't be surprise to hear that he specifically makes the movies as material for him to get off to his wife being a badass woman and that's it
More like he gets off to that fat check from the budget he slips into his own family pocket
If anybody sees this and knows why could somebody explain to me the issue with the playground chant. Not like I've been using it ever said it I'm just curious what the issues are with it I'm guessing it's hinting towards Asian people being unclean but I don't know with my dumb white American brain.
A movie if you're going to the movie theater is measured by is it worth the popcorn or not.
good video
My brother got me into the games since the psp freedom 2 and am excited for wilds
I was so annoyed when they didnt add him in iceborne
I wouldn´t have minded the isekai approach. I think "normal" people reacting and interacting with the MH world could be fun. But they made it soooo endlessly bland and uninspired.
The army dudes are around for like 10 minutes and then that's it, it's just Alice barely reacting to things around her
I came up with a hopefully more entertaining plot in 10 minutes. It is long, but please hear me out first! There is a village that is ransacked by a Rathalos. But then, a brave group of Hunters rescues the village from being destroyed, slaying the King of the Skies as a collaborative team. A village kid (or teenager) witnesses the fight and sees the beast being struck down by the fearless squad. How awesome would that be? To witness a team of skilled fighters take down a huge wyvern in front of your eyes? When the fight is over and the team begins carving the monster, this villager goes and congratulates the team. At a party celebrating the successful hunt, the same kid or teen from earlier asks the leader or a member of the squad how they fought back and why. This member or leader could say something like: “Because we are Monster Hunters. That’s what we do best. You wanna join?” This could inspire the villager to want to be a hero (or heroine!) and become a Hunter just like the squad who saved their village from destruction. They go to a guild and train for several years, growing up to be a young adult and learning how to use weapons. They could pick the same dual blades as in the film. One day, they head out for their first official hunt and as they are hunting a Aptonoth, they overhear a bigger, stronger, louder monster (Could be an Anjanath or maybe a green Rathian as a surprise?) coming over for a kill and the rookie hides behind a rock. Maybe cover themselves in mud to cover their scent to show their resourceful skills. After returning home, the rookie is assigned to a team of other rookies and they work together to take down whichever large monster when they are ready. Shenanigans ensue. One day, they managed to track the monster, but before they could leave peacefully, the monster attacks one of their squadmates and either kills them or gravely wounds them. They manage to outrun the monster and head back to the village to heal. As a act of vengeance, the rookie vows to slay the monster for killing/or wounding their companion. Cue training and hunting montage. Eventually, they all encounter the same monster while hunting a much bigger but not-too-stronger monster (like a Great Jagras or something similar to that monster’s level) and work together to slay both monsters. They dispatch the Great Jagras and use traps for this other monster for research. Movie could go on with an epilogue or a montage of the team growing stronger, maybe a little older, and slay a Rathian or a blue Rathalos. Boom. Movie ends.
Sorry it's long-winded. I'm just passionate about this series and wanted to share my idea. I kept it simple because sometimes, a simple movie is a good thing. I know it is not the best thing in the world, but I tried.
Passion is good! It's great to share ideas with each other
Lightning is Pure fire.
Yeah the movie was trash, thank God that we got something better later on called Monster Hunter: Legends of the Guild.
Great video...showing that kirin doujin has me so tempted 😭😭😭 anyways I'm gonna carry on till I finish the video, 50 mins in now
Despite this being my most HATED movie of all time.... there are 2 GOATED things about it: 1. CGI of Diablos 2. Tony Jaa
this video changed my life for the better . . . .
Monster hunter is literally so open ended you can make a entire dnd game without much issue. My ideal movie (literally just for me, no one else lol) would be an entire feature length film about the events of mh3u from the point of view of Cha Cha and Kayamba, simple slapstick comedy and awe inspiring scenes like watching cedeaus glow in the pale light of the sea, or jhen morhan dancing across the dunes, Kayamba having to rescue his brother from being sucked up by a Giginox on the cave ceiling, and ending with a climactic battle where a Rouge Alatreon threatens Moga Village as it battles against an Abyssal Lagiacrus on the sea floor creating a massive typhoon above them (we only ever see Aletreon associated with fire and lava, i wanna see him in his ocean environment form!).
if you can’t get the weapons and their techniques right, why make a mh movie at all?
The funniest (read: worst) part about the whole isekai thing imo is that they immediately write themselves into a corner by doing it. The boring army guys get isekai'd, and then they shoot their guns at the black Diabolos- but wait, this is the monster hunter movie, they can't be using modern day weapons! So now, they have to say that monsters are just immune to guns and they need to use swords and stuff. But uh, I don't know if they forgot... Guns exist in monster hunter, and they work fine. Bowguns are pretty much just straight up guns, and the official term for ranged weapon users in general is "gunners". Literally just forced themselves to create a lore plot hole because they couldn't be assed to make a more creative story.
Uuuuuhhhhh.... No. Eragon.
So I think I was the only person who noticed that black diablos had red eyes in the movie. With how accurate all the monster models were, I am of the (probably wrong) opinion that they were foreshadowing the gore magala bit by giving the diablos the frenzy.
No you see we have to give it red eyes so you understand that it is ontologically evil
@@AlbaAlbtross I am giving them too much credit, aren't I?
I've watched this movie 3 times. The first time I was sober and so excited for a monster hunter movie and came away speechless. The 2nd time I was higher than the moon and fell asleep. I had to give the movie one last chance, there HAD to be something redeemable. I got cross faded to the point that I was laughing at my own breathing and turned on the movie. Nothing. There is nothing positive about that movie. You can't even make jokes about how bad it is because every scene is just bland, tastless or just false.
Honestly outstanding. Like i have no words ahfhdhfhbdd
Amazing video love all the details you go into, this channel is underrated and deserves more subs
Thank you so much ❤ i really appreciate hearing stuff like this
They coulda just had a movie where fatalis destroys everything, then a monster hunter goes on a journey to find and kill fatalis. Boom would’ve been sick
They butchered the diablos too, the diablos acts like a sandshark in the sand. And look at its forelegs, they are way too big.
One of the most ridiculous parts of nerscylla’s adaptation is that they’re allergic to sunlight for some reason. Also I’m glad that this review talked about the film’s terrible soundtrack.
ITS SO ASSSSSS
Great video the godzilla 1998 film was hated to much and godzilla the series is amazing
The mistyped year makes me think you're talking about space godzilla aldhsjhfksdhs
@@AlbaAlbtross sorry my brain stopped working alsdhfmnshf also the 1998 film is great
It's a good action movie, but a bad Monster Hunter adaptation. If you've never played the games, it isn't so bad. Sadly it was a wasted opportuniity and should have remaind faithful to the source material. Diablos looked very cool though.
It's real disappointing to see such a high budget put on this project. Paul had actual designers for the monsters critique the way the monsters were being depicted and he still fumbled it with a film that only looks like monster hunter if you squinted really hard, turned it upside down and lit it up with gasoline. It's kinda weird too. the opening of the sandship, the desert section with a Dahren mohran skeleton, The monster selection surprisingly includnig only monsters you see in 4U. Makes me feel like this started out as maybe a movie adaptation to 4U's narrative, but once monster hunter world popped into the scene and so it was changed massively to tack on anything world-related to ride the trend. It's really nothing but the crazy ramblings of a guy with strings and tacks on a wall, but i'm glad that bozo Anderson didnt get his slimy hands on 4U to try and shoehorn his wife into.
Milla Jovovich as little miss forge
You made a whole video about a Monster Hunter movie but they never made one. I mean there’s definitely not one. Nope no movie whatsoever. Never happened
That would be such a cool idea though. The monsters could look really cool. And hear me out, what about guns? Right? Like what if there was an ambigous squad of modern soldiers in the monster hunter world? Too bad there aren't any monster hunter movies...
bro i love this movie, maybe im crazy
I guess there had to be at least one person who loved it on the planet ghdbgjdbfd
I mean. good for you . I wish I could like it.
I am new here .. but after watching this video.. i know i'm gonna stay for a long time here.. great video btw
Aaaaa thank you so much!!
I only watched half of the movie myself, amd hobestly it isnt an adaptation. The MH movie was something.ething much more akin to several fanfics I have read and written than an actual adaptation of an amazing series. Although, the transport scene was inspiration for my own MH fanfic which thankfully hasn't been ripped apart into atoms by people irate over the movie
As someone who's read a decent chunk of fanfiction, I wouldnt even compare this to fanfic. Fanfics have given the earth so much more than Paul ws Anderson asfgsjgkshgdkl
@AlbaAlbtross that's a fact. Hell the man should have stopped at R.E. Extinction so the plot didn't become such crap. Also, I feel you on the fanfic thing, having read and written them since 2006 lol
I didnt even know a movie could be that bad, I watched it like 3 years ago and have still yet to hear of a movie even close to being as bad with its budget. They made a worse movie than fucking morbius for crying out loud.
At least Morbius had meme power, this film really had nothing going for it at all
See if I had to make a Monster Hunter movie adaptation, I wouldn't do any of this stuff in this movie. There wouldn't even be people. Just the monsters, and they'd go on adventures like in The Land Before Time. The main characters would be an aptonoth, a kelbi, and an apceros, and the villain would be a velocidrome with a bunch of velociprey goons.
Unfathomably based idea, that sounds cute as hell actually
gotta add a rhenoplos and a popo too!
Can the true BBEG be an Anjanth with a perpertual cold? Now that I put a little thought into this I can't stop picturing an adorable baby pukei pukei trying to fly to get some scatternuts...
@@atbauchat nah if this is a land before time style thing, We need to scare the younguns....Add Deviljho!
Honestly, even if they wanted to go for a more action heavy movie, they could have just gone on a hunt for the story. Do the trope of the hunter hiding behind a rock while a monster is enraged and getting ready to charge then flash back to the village where they were approached by the village elder/guild gal/whoever and asked to help deal with the rathalos/monoblos/diablos/great jaggi that's been stealing mosswine from their farm. Show the hunter getting ready, show the villagers going about their lives as the hunter departs on the quest and starts the hunt for real before catching up to the start and finishing the movie shortly after.
Very amusing how many RUclips comments are more inventive than a whole film studio..
God, I totally forgot about the existence of this "what if my wife" Paul W. S. Anderson movie, nice video btw
Thank you! I'm glad other people are also getting tired of his schtick
Banger video, I didn't know anything about that translation part of the video, how ridiculous, lol
I'm grateful for it cos it meant they didn't get to profit off of this soulless film alsjfhshdha
great video! I especially appreciate the look into the movie beyond just "durr it looks bad" but the philosophy behind it, too
Thank you! Everyone's talked about how the movie is awful but I wanted to touch on why it specifically is a shitty adaptation, so I'm glad you liked that
Wasn’t this movie partially inspired by the Metal Gear/Monster Hunter cross over? Even so, it’s a shame MH got such a poor presentation movie wide. Here’s hoping it gets a better presentation later!
Inspiration implies that Paul ws Anderson is capable of being inspired..
Good video! Frontier is not outside your grasp though, you should look into it, it takes a tiny bit of work, but it is very possible to play frontier today!
Ough.. I meant more that I don't have the time. On top of playing regular monster hunter I also play ff14 and a lot of dnd gbjshghsgd. But I would like to run around in game at some point, just to look around.
Good analysis
Thank youuuu!
Isn't Zamtrios in MH4? That means there are actually 2 amphibians in MH4. Btw, this video was an absolute blast! You are SO underrated!
Thank you so much!! And omg you're right I totally forgot he counts cos shark makes me think fish like plesioth im so dumb ghsngbsvfbfs
Great vid, what memories!
And many more to come!
(warning ⚠️ my comment has a lot of text) The movie is bad but its first act is peak of perfection (at least for me, and I'm not the only one who thinks that), although as it progresses it becomes more disastrous, I still love this movie and I feel that the complaints and criticisms of this movie are already getting old (and bad), this movie is my guilty pleasure, And like it or not, this movie introduced Godzilla to new generations and reached countries that did not know the character (something similar to the Star Wars prequels that already have a whole generation that grew up with them) it is a good monster movie (although not a very good Godzilla movie) don't believe me?, that's what the director of Godzilla Minus One said!, in his words: "1998's Godzilla was pretty well put together and a fun movie, but I can understand people who also say this isn't Godzilla," I think as a Kaiju horror movie, it's pretty well executed." -Takashi Yamazaki As a final note I will add that the credits song aged like milk due to Puff Diddy's "situation" 💀
godzilla didnt know the danger he was in when he did that music video with diddy..
