This is less than perfect but sometimes that is just the way it is when you are playing improvised music and trying to work ideas out in the moment.

One thing I always tell students when they want to learn a song (whatever genre that may be), is to listen to it a lot and if there are numerous recorded versions, check them out to see how other artists treat the tune. Thankfully, in the world of jazz standards this is often very easy. Henry Mancini was a composer of tunes that jazz musicians often used as vehicles of improvisation with "The Days of Wine and Roses" probably being his most famous.
