The Differences between the The Lumos, Fineliners and Isograph pens
Просмотров 6 тыс.Год назад
One of the questions I often get asked is what are the differences between The Lumos, a fine liner and an Isograph pen? So, I thought I would write a blog post to explain their differences (and similarities). Starting with the Isograph pen, this is a very clever pen and if you have one, I encourage you to use it because they can last a very long time. I am lucky enough to own a very old Rotring...

Tom's Studio - Oblique Pen Holder Adjustment
Hi I have just received my Lumos Pro pen. However I found the written instructions confusing and wished I had seen this video beforehand. I unscrewed the brass top and then put the tip in to the ink then screw the brass tip back on. I was worried the chisel shape one would not hot through the hole but it did, thankfully without damaging it. I was wearing surgical type gloves however everything was fine until I went to write with it and ink leaked out all around the tip. Can I leave the capillary in the pen or will it dry out?
Tom, I have been tempted to buy your pen. Can you use it with Platinum Carbon black ink? That's the ink I use with fountain pens I draw with. I also like both fineliners and rotring stylographic pens.
love this a lot!
Feel like I’m having the same issue as everyone else with this pen. The nib holder won’t unscrew and I can’t refill the pen. Sad to see others aren’t finding solutions
I'm curious the difference between the fineliner tips and the two writing tips? I can't find a sample of the writing tips or much information on them. I'm looking for something close to a Micron tip.
Beautiful! I’ve now purchased two for myself and two as gifts. I wondered if you’re outsourcing the making of these pens now? I would guess so. And I’m in awe of seeing this process of you making one!!
Hi there, thank you so much, I really appreciate the feedback. All our pens are hand assembled in our location in Somerset, UK.
@@TomsStudioinkwow! Incredible!
fantastic idea. but my only peeve with this is why don't you use a regular cone shaped tip(i kind of mean it like a pencil) the sharp drop off from the cylindrical body to the tip feels janky and unnatural to hold. other than that everything about this pen is just perfect. (no messiness of ink leaking due to shaking which regularly happens if a fountain pen shakes around in your pocket as this stores ink through capillary action) another plus point is the ink refills don't get your hands dirty like fountain pens because the refilling action happens through the backside and not where you actually hold the pen to write. This feels like the much awaited product for people who like the infinite refill ability of fountain pens but get frustrated when treating a fountain pen as a grab and go and it just works kind of thing. (the fountain pen isn't designed to be grab and go due to issues like ink leaking when shaken around too much, the nib getting damaged if it accidentally falls on the nib etc)
Thanks so much for your positive comments and also feedback. Really appreciate it.
Fantastic!!!
Thank you!
Can you clean the tips too?
yes they are washable under running water!
thanks for replying here, and exactly as you've said, they're washable under a tap and just drying off with a paper towel.
Hi! I just went to change the ink in my Lumos. Unfortunately the black piece behind the tip holder is not coming out when I unscrew the tip. Any ideas on how to resolve this?
In this video he used the silicon cap with small pliers to unscrew the black tip holder, aim to hold the small flat section of the holder rather than the threaded area.
Hi, were you able to resolve this? If not, please send us a message at hello@tomsstudio.co.uk and the team will be more than happy to guide you through. Many thanks.
Incredible....💘
Thank you!
Hi! Could I carry the lumo with me to work outside the house or will be a messy with the ink inside? Thank you.
It won't leak, My mini doesn't.
Should be fine!
I feel like I need one
Maybe you do. What did you decide...?
@@TomsStudioink that I'm getting the lumos pro next month
Just got mine and is pretty bad, the nib holder keeps sliding up, the screw is just not good.
Oh no, sorry to hear. That doesn't sound right. Are you OK to email the team directly on hello@tomsstudio.co.uk so they can look into this for you? We'd really like to get to the bottom of it.
What pen in was it - you changed the nib - Great.
This is our Studio Fountain Pen which you can find here - tomsstudio.com/collections/fountain-pens
Is it possible to screw a Lumos mini into a Duo? I wanted to get some cool colour combinations but buying a second Duo is a bit expensive.
no
Yes you can!
Can you change the nib on this pocket pen?
Our Studio Pocket Fountain Pen is compatible with several nibs and yes they can be changed. You can see all the nibs we sell with this pen here - tomsstudio.com/products/the-studio-pocket-fountain-pen I hope that helps!
I'm wanting one just need to wait
Got mine
Very helpful thank you
You're welcome :)
I noticed in the lumos - how to video from last year that there is a metal ball on the top of the reservoir. Mine and the one in this video doesn't have this - is this an old feature?
We've refined and iterated the product design since launch so it's possible that the latest Lumos are slightly different. All Lumos are made with super high quality materials and designed to last though! How have you been getting on with it?
Loving my Lumos "Mini".
Great to hear.
Good evening. Is there a video in how to clean the nib to change ink color???
A good idea. We do sell a nib cleaning solution which is a great option - tomsstudio.com/products/nib-cleaning-solution?_pos=1&_sid=2129e9f4c&_ss=r
I’d love to see how all the nibs draw/write to understand which ones I might want.
Great idea. Noted for a future video!
I now own two, definitely coming back for more. Very nice pens. Just received pro flex studio...wow wonderful writer and perfect flow. It can with spare G nib, but I've no idea how I'd change out the old one from the feed housing. I could suggest one thing to improve on the pen it would be to texture the grip. My fingers thanks to years of hands in the bunsen have very little sensitivity, and hardly any fingerprint for gripping so fingers slide. Believe it or not powder coating, to me, is more difficult to hold, and slippier than mirror finish metal/resin, as powder coating/brushed metal finishes reduce cohesive function of natural oils/sweat. I have a question about the pen body and gold button on the cap. Are either engravable? And by what technique? So I ask for the right method and placement. I definitely want my name /intitials on this pen, to ward off the envious pen pinchers. 😊
Hi, thanks so much for your message and sorry for the slow reply. Great to hear you've been enjoying our pens, thanks so much for letting us know. Are you still having trouble changing the old nib from the feed housing? And really helpful feedback re grip. Noted! We do now offer engraving on many of our pens, specifically the Lumos (all sizes), the Studio Pocket Fountain Pen and our Studio Fountain Pen. You can see how this will appear by going to the relevant product page on our website, and having a play with the engraving option. I hope that helps! Engraving is done by a super special and awesome laser.
I've just received my pen. I've been looking for ages for a ef proflex that doesn't stop working and has consistent flow. I believe I've found it AT LAST! Like I said I've just received so we'll see, as osprey school pen started out good. I do have a question. The pen came with a spare ef G nib, but no instruction on how to old remove nib and feed from housing and position new nibs onto the feed and replace. Could you do a video on that please?
Oh good idea. If you're still having problems, please do email hello@tomsstudio.co.uk and the team can provide you personal instructions to make sure everything is working perfectly. Thanks!
Hello, can I fit a kakimori brass nib on the straight holder? Thank you
Not so sure about that. We have recently launched a brand new Tom's Studio One Dip Nib which may be of interest - tomsstudio.com/products/one-dip-nib
Can the nib be installed up side down for use by a Left-handed person?
Today I got my Sunrise with a pro flex today! The nip is amazing and pen looks beautiful! I‘m learning copperplate and with the pro flex nip you can write like with a pointed nip for a penholder. Impressive!
The nib holder will not unscrew and my pen is useless
me too :(
I am having the same problem. Were you ever able to get it out?
I had to use the silicone sleeve and a small pair of pliers to very very carefully unscrew the nib holder.
@@clelierich3736 I tried EVERYTHING and nothing worked. Worse still was the company’s failure to respond. Lousy company, lousy product.
Me too! Should have a better tool to unscrew. Has to use pliers.
That Staedtler Fineliner pen actually is refillable! You can take off the metal nib from where it meets the plastic and refill the body with a dropper!
id love to see a comparison to you ef flex nib and the pro flex ?
Good idea. Noted!
Tom you never showed us about filling the barrel with ink 😢
Really wanting to try one of these pens out! Very beautiful.
I’m really considering this pen! I love your work. How much ink does it hold when used as an eyedropper?
Ordered one and looking forward to receiving it. Thanks!
How much for the fine liner? It’s the one that has the same tip as a mont blanc starwalker fine liner.
Hi! Thanks for the message and sorry for the delayed reply. I believe you're referring to our Lumos pen, an infinitely refillable fine line, which comes with 11 different Japanese tips. For pricing information, please take a look here: tomsstudio.com/collections/lumos I hope that helps!
