    Ed has taught every class he has this way since the inception of institute of grappling. I believe you even came to a class and disagreed with this approach to teaching as there was no drilling.

      @Bradley9967 Месяц назад

      Not only was Ed well ahead, but here they lacked the follow-up. They don't understand the ecological approach. It's poor to simply copy and paste games. Rather, you have to look at your room, ask what behaviour is emerging, and adapt the game with constraints accordingly.

      @grapplecollective I'm sure you know that I haven't. (I'd love to give it ago, by the way) Can we also agree based on my other comment on this video that I'm talking authoritatively? I'd be happy to elaborate should you wish, I'm just not seeking out an argument. I'm going off of what you said.

    • @grapplecollective

      @@Bradley9967you should come and train sometime. For you to be asserting that I don’t understand eco or CLA when you’ve never been to my classes is wrong. You claim I don’t adapt constraints based on what I see in the room which is just plain wrong. If you were present in the class clipped for the video, you would have even seen this. I’m assuming that this comes from a place of respect for what Ed has been doing, as opposed to malice towards me so no hard feelings my side. But obviously you have more knowledge on how Ed has been teaching classes over the years. But in fairness the point of the video was not about us being first, hence why it is not mentioned at all in the video itself. Happy to change the title though.

      @@grapplecollective we all have the greatest respect for you as a coach and as a competitive athlete. You were very welcoming of me at London grapple even though it’s not your gym and was kind enough to offer a roll. The point of people pointing out your not the first ecological gym in London is that we feel the credit should go to the person who genuinely opened the doors in London to this approach to training and out of respect to ed

    Ah man. 100% not the first, doesn't mean not a great place but Hendon is london right? and Finchley? coz institute of grappling been training this way for years long before it was a buzz word. give credit where credits due please.

    • @grapplecollective
      @grapplecollective Месяц назад

      Ed is a great coach! From our understanding he’s been using a variety of training methods, our claim was to be the first gym to teach all classes under the constraints led approach only (which we have been doing since early last year). I always tell people that Ed is one of the only people I know in the UK who has been using these methods for years

    • @jordanlittle6628
      @jordanlittle6628 Месяц назад

      @@grapplecollectivehe teaches all classes under this approach and has done for years and years. Ed spent more time researching these techniques (he is a super geek deep down and an academic) reading reading reading evolving and had all the academic knowledge to back up what he developed as a great technique to teach, then done a few interviews, let's anyone train with him gets flown around the world to show other people, and beciase he is an introvert everyone else is dinning out and taking credit away from him. Everyone should be crediting him for this and there not. the guy is a genius that have people travelling 3 hours to 8 hours daily to train with him but due to his introvert nature he doesn't get credit. it's just not cool in my opinion.

    • @Bradley9967
      @Bradley9967 Месяц назад

      @jordanlittle6628 He really is ahead of his time. I'd often argue something with him, I'd always conclude that he's right all along. When I started with him, I asked him multiple times that I was worried that I was going too hard. He would always say, "That's something that I'd have to figure out over time." In other words,"ecological"the environment would teach this. He understands a lot of things other coaches don't, such as the fact that being with someone of high skill can overwhelm and come across as if the higher belt is spazzy. Most coaches don't understand that it comes down to perception and implicit learning. It's about repeated exposure with live resistance. Techniques (teaching IP) are just a representation of once upon a time and put your focus in the wrong place. If you look into his car, he often has another book on ecological learning.

    How is this "the first ecological gym in London"? What about the "institute of grappling"?

    • @grapplecollective
      @grapplecollective Месяц назад

      It was my understanding that Ed has been using a variety of different methods in his classes, including CLA for quite some time. The claim was to be the first standalone gym to implement a full timetable using CLA only (we did this early last year). Happy to be informed otherwise. In any case, I regard Ed as a pioneering coach in UK grappling.

    • @Bradley9967
      @Bradley9967 Месяц назад

      @grapplecollective I wish you a lot of success, so do forgive me in advance. I'm telling you this to protect you. Do you mean ecological, or do you mean CLA? There's a difference. What's your definition of "ecological"? Would you give a student advice, especially if asked? If so, you can't say you teach 100% ecologically. Would you ever film a student and then show it back to that student. If so, that's not 100% ecological. Whatever you meant by what you said, we can only go by the claim you said. Ed has a background in nuro science, so he's able to read the research papers and apply that research. This is what's necessary to be able to apply the ecological approach. He's regularly adjusting "constraints" even mid flow if he doesn't like what he sees. It's an art. He may tell me I'm no longer allowed to use my hands or not allowed to get on my side. Using the ecological approach isn't simply putting together games like Kit Dale does. Especially not using the approach well, every student is different, and this approach has to be adjusted to that student. I'm not sure how you can have a 'syllabus' whilst adjusting to each individual student. I'm in love with the ecological approach, and as an eco warrior, we get upset when we feel that something we love is being robbed of meaning. I wish you every success, and it's only natural that mistakes will be made. That's life!

Probably never gonna come to London, but if I am there someday - I'll definitely be interested in visiting this place. Kind of a newbie in the BJJ world here (1 year of training, 2 stripes) - but the community you have on your hands is something special and you look just like the guy to lead this whole shebang. I ran a full time MA school here in Nova Scotia from 1994 to 2020 with various arts as well as BJJ from 2011. So many highs and lows and seeing students develop from young children to adults and still train is so worth it. The last eight years of my school I had a staff of 12 instructors and over time that lead to many different issues and problems and then the pandemic hit and I close down for four months and realized how much stress I was under so decided to close permanently. 2021 my friend built a 2000sft gym just 2min form my house so I am there teaching six a days a week ( I have a full time job) and help him make his gym grow. Also I have no financial responsibility lol. I wish you the best of luck with your journey and any advice I would give is make sure you are the one in charge at all times, your club, your name, nothing else ( just my opinion) also having been in the arts for almost 50 years I have learned ……The most dedicated student you will ever have is yourself.

I'll put my coaching capacity against most black belts because I've spent years studying coaching and how people learn. The Art of Learning would be a great book to start with. CLA and Ecological Dynamics are what I'm leaning into now. Hope you make it happen.
