Agreed! Fascinating in the 3rd mvt to hear a reworking of material from the 4th piano Suite’s opening Toccata. Skalkottas must have felt a particular affection for the piece, as have several prominent pianists since (Rudolf Serkin judged Skalkottas a genius on the strength of it, and George Hadjinikos said it was the first Skalkottas he came across in 1952, and that he was immediately enthralled: “here finally is the composer to put Greece on the musical map” was his reaction.)

@@paulgalbraith8032 I remember he was one of Hans Keller’s “five greatest composers of the 20th century”, the others being (I think) Schoenberg, Stravinsky, Shostakovich and Britten.

Yes, I vaguely remember reading Keller opining the ‘3 Ss’ of the 20th century - referencing Hans von Bullow’s famous ‘3 Bs’ quote in (highest) praise of Brahms - were Stravinsky, Schoenberg & Skalkottas - except Skalkottas’s time had yet to come. And your quote rings true, knowing how highly Keller esteemed Britten & Shostakovich. (Franz Schmidt would probably have also been on Keller’s pick-6)
