The music world of an evolutionary geneticist @UW-Madison, who is doing science to understand the past and future of life, and playing piano to understand this uncertain world and his own soul.
Camille Saint-Saëns: Le Carnaval des animaux: XIII. Le cygne, "The Swan"
A revisit to my old friend ‘The Swan’.
Compared to previous recordings, I especially like that the melody breathes more naturally and the LH chords are better accompanying than disturbing.
I think this recent improvement benefits especially from playing Chopin, and from more intentional wrist breathing that is essential for Chopin.

Bach Prelude in B minor, BWV 855a (Arr. Alexander Siloti)

My so-far favorite version of Bach Siloti. After spending a long time to tame the technical challenges, I can now bring up the speed over the baseline for the phrasing to be clear. Interestingly, I feel more emotional about music after a heavy load of workout tonight (I love leg days!), probably because some post-training hormones have boosted my sensitivity. That kind of sensitivity almost put...

A full recording of Bach Prelude in B minor BWV 855a (Arr. Alexander Siloti). Rolling chord is inspired by the recording by Yaroslavl Senyshyn. The way to arrange two repeats is also inspired by recordings of Khatia Buniatishvili, Emil Gilles, Vadim Chaimovich, and Vikingur Olafsson. Many more details to work on, and it is time to really enter the technical hell of rolling chords!
Bach Praeludium in C minor

My first recording of a two-voice Bach’s piece. It is fun to play this at a faster speed, but maybe I can have more details, such as more dramatic contrast and decent rests in this ‘non-stop’ style, if slow down a bit. Also could have avoided one mistake.

A third take on one of my favorite classical piece. Attempted to develop clearer voicing in the past two weeks. It is hard to keep track of up to four voices and to decide how they should go together, but hopefully I'll eventually get there at the normal speed!

The most recent take of The swan after having my first lesson with @Dariafortepiano . Some improvements are made from last month after paying more attention to weight transferring, octaves, and the heavy thumb. Thank you Daria! Although there is still a long way to go to really optimize those techniques and focus more on musicality. In the future, I would wish to play the the melody lines in a ...

A third attempt to record this beautiful piece. Added a bit more rubato to let out the emotions. Still need to work on the volume balance between left-hand chords and right-hand melody.

A Traditional Shaker Song. Although the melody may sound simple, as indicated by its name, I feel a deeper emotional depth can be reached, after improving the phrasing and other details, even the arrangements. Having that said, playing this song is already making me feel redeemed.

This is a second take of one of my favorite piece on piano, after 9 months of piano study. This updated version has a clearer melody line and logic behind dynamics, but I still need to figure out the 'dreamy' vibe. Will keep improving the musicality, knitting all four voice parts together, and some details.

I have to get my piano music back out and play again. I keep putting it off because I'm too busy. The way you play really inspires me to want to play again. I will someday. Thanks again for sharing.
@@SteveOostdyk Hey Steve! I really appreciate your sincere words! And I am so happy that this music delivers some good things. Since I only started piano a year ago, I feel it’s never too late to restart your journey on keyboards. Actually I’m recently inspired by a gorgeous vocalist and pianist @ChelseaGuoMusic, and I think you can build a unique path like hers, since you’re a great vocalist too:)
Thanks for sharing your talent. Nice phrasing. Enjoyed this very much!
I really like your playing! Thanks again for sharing.
