    I've applied to have a student teacher for years! We are a big district and there are only so many student teachers. I do mentor new teachers every year, though.

    I have a question about the chairs. I used chairs last year and the kids were constantly rocking on them, moving them, or sometimes would hide under them. It was a constant annoyance everyday reminding them we dont do these things. Do you think it would be easier if thet just sat on the carpet using sit dots?

    • @tiffanycurry7003
      @tiffanycurry7003 5 месяцев назад

      My mentor teacher has her students sit on the carpet. She was K-6. The only time we had chairs was for recorder and ukulele and that was 4th and 6th grade. They were able to get them out and put them back.

      Great questions. I've seen it done many ways. Chairs, poly spots, carpet squares, etc... Do what works best for you. The setup doesn't have to be the same as anyone else. Find a way to get the most out of your room for you and your students.

      @tiffanycurry7003 That is another good way to do it. One of things that is so fun about having your own music room is discovering what works best for you.

    What program do you use for the music?

    • @teachingmusicwithsusan7729
      @teachingmusicwithsusan7729 4 месяца назад

      The notation software that I used is called MuseScore. It's free. The actual songs that I use in class come from a couple of places. Pearson music products like Making Music and Interactive Music as well as Music K8 by Plank Road Publishing.

    Do you have a video about your musical rewards? I have a hard time thinking of ones that would be different enough from our regular activities to seem like a reward (other than freeze dance).

    • @teachingmusicwithsusan7729
      @teachingmusicwithsusan7729 9 месяцев назад

      I do not but, I will tell you what I do. So, they get an extra music activity. They have their favorites (a 2nd playing piece or an extra dance), But, I don't let them choose. I have 5 categories and they cannot repeat a category until they have done all of them. (Silly song, Body percussion, instrument playing, dance, and story book.) If that doesn't sound like it work for your students, maybe find out what they think would be a good reward. They might give you some great ideas. I hope this helps.

    I recently switched to public schools. Who supervises the students behind the curtain or classes that are waiting (where)? At my old school (private) classroom teachers had attending concerts in their contracts. They had to sit with classes before/after they performed.

      If a student only gets to play one type of instrument in music. They can get really bored. However, if they get to play many different ones, it will be more exciting to them.

    omg i wish my music teacher in elementary did this. all she did was make up clap some beats every class throughout the whole class time. My first year of middle school my school still required to take music and she yelled at the class for no reason and threw her shoes at us. Last year they let us choose our electives and i will never choose any of her’s because of how rude she was to me and my class

    I'd like to give another alternative rest position, which is pretty standard when you get into higher grades (or even professional contexts). Chest/stomach. I.e., holding the instrument straight up and down, but dropping it down against your chest. Like your "chin rest" (which I also hate), but lower. It's useful for anyone who ends up playing clarinet, sax, oboe, or similar woodwinds (not necessarily brasswinds) in middle or high school. And even brasswinds, while not the same, have a somewhat similar rest position.

    So... that zero with the slash is called "null". Anyway... O...M...G. I loved this video. I could geek out on assessments all day long. Not a music teacher... I'm an english (EFL) teacher. But... wow. I've seen (and have tried to correct) some absolutely terrible assessment rubrics. I knew you were legit when I saw actual numbers. I do the same thing. 0 mistakes, 1-2 mistakes, 3-5 mistakes, etc. I think the most important thing I learned in my Uni assessments course was that, given a rubric, 10 different teachers should all come up with the exact same grade. So, you know, no subjectivity whatsoever. That said, quick shout-out that I came from another of your videos. In my free periods, if a music class is scheduled, I often sit in on the class. As a musician, I love helping kids with music, so I really appreciate your videos. I'm currently teaching at elementary schools (overseas), so I'm excited about trying to learn more about early childhood music pedagogy. I even bought a soprano recorder so I could follow along with the lessons. You have a new subscriber!

      Thank you so much for the compliments! Also, thanks for the info on null... I'm glad I know what to call it now. So glad you are having fun with the recorder. There are some great RUclips videos out there for kids that start with BAG. I think you will enjoy those. Also, thanks for watching even though this isn't your discipline. What a nice thing!

      @aradia1379 2 года назад

      @@teachingmusicwithsusan7729 The third and fourth graders I've worked with have gone a bit beyond BAG (I actually had a student ask me how to play the high C (LH 2nd finger thumb) and high D (LH 2nd finger no thumb) before they were taught in class), but it's really been fun learning and teaching them at the same time! We've been slowly working our way up to playing Sakura Sakura (I teach in Japan), but I've seen problems with some other students WRT rhythm (dotted quarter notes, etc), so it was really nice to see a music teacher's perspective on teaching rhythm and melody etc. I'll keep watching your videos and I hope to learn a bit more about how to help my students in their music classes. =)
