    I can see both sides of the argument in the section bringing up how Rap music only belongs to one cultural group of people. (This is me rambling to try and understand your view in the way I'm initially interpreting it, so correct me if I'm off LOL) Similar things can be seen in each group. I'm Chicana, and can see how annoying it is with how the music styling of how a group of people who may have historically and even today trash talk said style while also trying to use it. I see it a lot with Mariachi music and how in a non-Mexican/Mexican-American context is used in a comedic sense because it sounds goofy to others. Meanwhile myself and all the other Chicanos and Mexicans grew up listening to the music in contexts of celebrations, high emotions, dancing. Personally I hear it a lot at weddings to express how powerful the love of two people are, or at fairs/festivals to get people hyped for the festivities of the day. Not saying that Mariachi cant be used in a comedic sense, but like Id love for people to know just how beautiful the music is. A lot of Mexican culture tends to get meme'd on and shrugged off, so it's a bit awkward for me to see it used in tv shows or movies when its only shown as being a funny-goofy-silly song. (Movies like Rango do a great job with the usage of Mariachi in how it's used for story telling/narration and following a protagonist.) I do have a question on your thoughts on people who use rap styles in their own native contexts? (i.e. DAOKO rapping in Japanese or Bloodywood occasionally rapping in both Hindi and English in some of their music that combines Heavy Metal with what I think is North Indian sounds/instruments/vocals)

    I really think In The Heights works so much better and, while Hamilton was a great experiment and I'm really happy it brought new attention to Broadway, I agree that the form of a rap musical doesn't sit well with the content of 18th c. enslavers. In the heights uses the context of Washington Heights and makes the place feel like a character through the music and Hamilton... doesn't.

  • @janettewong9900
    @janettewong9900 11 месяцев назад

    So I’m a major 80s/90s British Invasion Sir Andy pop writing-type and Hamilton is so overrated BUT it all being sung is a stylistic choice and he’s not the first one to do it. Demy’s “Umbrellas of Cherbourg” is an example of this. It’s really up to whether or not you can suspend your disbelief and that’s a hard sell I actually dislike a lot of LMM’s work precisely because post Hamilton, he does this very watered down rap that just isn’t very good. Moana, Encanto, The Little Mermaid: NOT EVERYTHING NEEDS A RAP VERSE/SONG, especially that last one. His first work that put him on Broadway and was based on his own life, “In The Heights” is honestly so much better but being so New York-centric, wasn’t as easy to appeal to a wider audience. There’s rap in that too so you might not like it but it’s the story of a kid growing up in 80s/90s Washington Heights, not the story of colonizers You’d probably enjoy Lindsay Ellis’ video essay on the topic of you haven’t seen it yet. Cheers

    It always raises alarm when someone says they "hate" a piece of work, because the majority of people educated enough to appreciate various artforms would at least say they "dislike" or "don't prefer" a work. "Hate" is a word reflective of juvenile ignorance, but I suppose it generates views.

    • @awkwardmations
      @awkwardmations 11 месяцев назад

      It's really just a strong word for me! Believe it or not this video is exaggerated to some degree for entertainment purposes and this musical doesn't consume my every waking thought. That aside I do find it odd that you'd come onto a video wherein a black woman outlines the racism present in a work and then claim she is juvenile for feeling a great disdain for said work. But I suppose hate is a silly immature word💖

  • @lizamoonblooded4196
    @lizamoonblooded4196 11 месяцев назад

    I was about to agree with you, then you bring politics in musical art and analysis. Broadway is one of the most expensive theaters out there. Not only is Hamilton expensive, but every show on Broadway is. Beetlejuice lowered prices for middle class audiences and it couldn't stay on Broadway even though it was probably more loved than Hamilton. It being in all music and songs is a deliberate choice. Many great shows do that. Take Les Mis and Cats for example. Les Mis has to be in all songs because the story is so complex. And Cats. It’s a musical of poems and there is a story, but even if there wasn’t one, it's still a fun experience. I mention these two in particular because Hamilton both has a very complex story and it's very fun. The story structure is very well done and Miranda(even though he doesn’t get everything right) he still makes the effort to make it incredibly simple, but well researched. Which is very important for a story that spans over 50 years of Hamilton's life. Actually there are a few times that the musical pauses and breathes. Even though it is all songs, the slower paced songs allow you to breathe a little. Then, it's back into the fast paced songs. Like how Schuyler Sisters follows Story of Tonight. A Winter's Ball starts slow, then picks up speed at the lyric "ladies". You'll Be Back is followed up by Right Hand Man. Slow song then fast song. This repeats for the entire show. I know you probably won't read this, but I wanted to put facts into your flimsy arguments. Thank you.

    • @awkwardmations
      @awkwardmations 11 месяцев назад

      Hey thanks for commenting! I know broadway is expensive, I thought I talked about that with my wicked story (We would've gotten dinner and gone home if we didn't win those tickets) I was just saying that at the time of writing this vid Hamilton got expensive even by broadway standards not that broadway is affordable. I just felt like that was extra insulting cuz of all the yt supremacy. Also yeah! the beetlejuice thing is cool! I acknowledge that broadway does do things to be accessible to less fortunate people, y'know like the ticket raffle thing I talked about. I also have no problem with musicals that sing all the way through. Idk if you read the edit I made but I did make a correction to the structure section that acknowledges that Hamilton is not the only one to employ this technique, and I actually like other musicals that do this! My major qualm was that when I first engaged with Hamilton as a TEENAGER the only musicals I'd engaged with was wicked and tv musicals none of which share hamilton's structure so it was kind of a shock to me that after watching all those animatics I wouldn't be getting any new content. Anyway while I appreciate your analysis of the song structure, I fear you may be expecting a bit too much from an 11 minute video especially considering the fact that I admitted I only watched the musical one time. A thorough analysis would require at least two rewatches imo. (so if my arguments are flimsy that's probably why lmao) That being said, I don't care how well researched it was. Or what sort of fantasy land allows you divorce politics from art analysis considering art is a reflection of life and politics are an inherent part of life especially for me as a black woman. And THIS piece of art is literally a distorted reflection of the past that softens the legacies of the white supremacist slave owning founders of this country. Thank you💖

    rap music isn't just for black people, it's a genre of music like any other. it was made by black people and now it's used by everyone. why are you acting like that's a bad thing? i would be glad to share my culture like that with the whole world. also, you fail to realise that this is this still a musical, the writers didn't want the rap to be eminem level of good (notice that eminem is white lmao), because musicals have to be understood by everyone and that's why it has to have a level of limitation. you might ask, well why didn't they just scrap the rap songs then? because they just want songs like that to be in their musical put simply. i hate the concept of "cultural appropriation" that americans have, literally no one else in the world is that a thing, i only started hearing some small people say it in my country because of AMERICAN influence. also, another thing you fail to understand is that the characters live in the late 1700, OF COURSE they are going to sing about how good washington was, because they're not from our generation. crazy right? it's almost as if the period and context of musicals matter. and i said all of this while not even liking hamilton myself because history musicals aren't my type (see how i called it a history musical, because it talks about the history and everything?). i hope you see this, but if you don't then i hope you just come to these conclusions yourself. also nice animation.

    • @awkwardmations
      @awkwardmations 11 месяцев назад

      Hey bud, thanks for commenting/the compliment! Let's get into it: People and cultures are allowed to have boundaries! Even if it's something small or over reasons you don't understand. These boundaries will exist even when cultures are willingly shared- which happens everyday all around the world! These boundaries become even more important when you consider the dynamics of oppression and racism, which exists all around the world, not just America. I find it interesting that you like all other white & non black rap enthusiasts hail eminem as a good rapper despite him standing side by side with Lin in my book and the books of many other black rap fans. It's bizarre to maintain that a white man is the best of a genre invented and continually perfected by black people. eminem's not all that and never has been. He's just another poor imitation and he's not even currently relevant I Have to assume you either don't rlly like rap or chose that example as a gotcha bro there's no way lmao It's totally possible to incorporate rap into musical theatre and I think that'd be such a cool concept. idk what sort of rap you listen to if eminem is ur standard but loads of rap is intelligible upon first listen. Like I said about Meg if you listen to her stuff for the first time, like listening to an average song you may not be able to sing/rap along but you can understand what she's saying. Like I said in the video, rap is a vast genre. Cultural appropriation can happen in any country bro idk what to tell you. And it's been happening and the poc in ur country have likely been speaking up about it with different language. Either way, not my fault. I'm American, I have absolutely no clue why you expect me to adhere to a culture that isn't mine when you clearly wouldn't do the same. Hell! You should love this term being shared across borders, isn't that the cultural sharing you adore? It's not hurting me in any way and I'm happy to share such language it's like the exact opposite of cultural appropriation. Anyway last thing I promise: These characters are not real, and I'm not talking to them! No one involved in this musical's writing was born or raised in the 1700s so they have no excuse! They no better than to write that sort of thing without critique. I'm not saying the characters have to have modern awareness (i mean they could it'd prolly make a decent comedy) but the narrative overall should probably critique a majority of the characters now that we know the dept of the horrors committed. I mean they literally brush over the slavery as a whole that's wild. Anyway that's it for me. If you have any problems with what I said just know I won't be going back and forth with you so don't worry bout anymore essays lmao bye💖

      @@vvvolato No, I'm not! There are loads of wealthy and even middle class black people around the world and some of them are american. But it is overwhelmingly evident that a lot of black americans struggle financially due to the effects of chattel slavery, babe. And listen, I'M middle class & couldn't afford to see hamilton or most broadway plays and do silly things like get an education. Ok, I more or less agree with some of your points, but I'm confused on one in particular. Why can't white people rap? I mean, I've never really seen anyone have that point of view, at least not to that extreme. I thought music is a way to express life in general? Gatekeeping that because of the color of my skin feels... strange? Like, imagine if a white guy tried to gatekeep black people from being a classical composer because he claims it was his culture's music and no one else's, that's what it kinda sounds like? Like, I want music to be a way to unite people, not divide them. But, then again, I haven't been in your shoes before, so i guess it's just something that I have more difficulty understanding. Like, I've always enjoyed rap music, even though I'm white, and that's because it touched me on a human level, like I'm sure it does to you as well. Like, it's good in so many ways. There's the more party rap if you just want to, well, party, and there's the emotional rap that rips into the heart. Plus, while there are definitely crap white rappers (looking at you G Eazy), can you really say that people like Mac Miller or the white members of Brockhampton were awful? I'm just genuinely curious why you believe all white people can't rap?

    • @awkwardmations
      @awkwardmations 11 месяцев назад

And yes gatekeeping due to skin color would seem strange if we lived in a vacuum but when white people can violate boundaries and dominate a genre built by the people they oppress you can see why we might not want you doing that! Also I don't have to imagine a white composer gatekeeping black people from classical music- They did do that! and in some subtler ways they still do. The difference between that sort of gatekeeping and mine is that white people have structural power to enforce their gatekeeping and do it on the basis of superiority. My "Gatekeeping" is a personal boundary that I wish all white people who seek to work toward anti racism to respect. As shown from the examples listed above I have no power to stop white people from pursuing a rap career(even if i did that's mad work i aint doin all that lmao) I have no problems with white people listening tho i couldn't care less. Also yeah I don't really care for any of those white rappers babe, they just don't compare lol But like I said it's just my opinion, if you wanna find a black person who's cool with white rap you won't have much trouble but you won't find her in me💖

      @@awkwardmations ok, thank you for clearing up some things. While I don’t agree with your opinion on white rap, I can understand where they come from. America definitely has a problematic history with racism, and still does today. Obviously with slavery, but also with things like redlining that still affects people today. It’s a history hard to reconcile for many. This also extends to music. The genres of blues and rock started out in black American culture but because of a multitude of factors(most prominently racism) those black voices were soon mostly drowned out. So, I understand where your thought process is coming from, however… Music, above all else, is meant to connect with people. And rap music is something I could connect with and even relate to. For instance, one of my favorite rappers when I was younger was Kid Cudi. Many of his songs talk about subjects such as mental health, depression, and grief. As someone who, without getting too much into it, has been through those kind of troubles, I can deeply connect to it. Now, you might be wondering why I bring this up? Because it goes to show that music, any kind of music, can connect to basically anyone. Now, I mentioned Mac Miller earlier. His music also touched on similar themes. Though obliviously different in experiences, Mac Miller and Kid Cudi were both people who used their experiences and their troubles as fuel for their music that many people of many backgrounds could relate to, and I would say, imo, they both did it well. Now, this isn’t an attack. This isn’t me trying to tell you what to think. This is all just from my own, biased mind. I’m willing to believe that I’m probably wrong about a lot I just said. Just my personal experience and opinions on some music subjects. You seem like a nice person who has an interesting art style. I hope to some some interesting projects from you in the future.

    Hi! As a person who loves Hamilton, I agree with a lot of your points. I am asian, so I won't comment on the rap bit, but I agree that most (if not all, I don't know I barely listen to rap) of the rap made my non-black creators sound like dOgshit. I agree that Hamilton is over glorifying slave owners. Thomas Jefferson in real life was a horrible person. Horrible isn't evemn the right word for him since he deserves so much more horrible words thrown at him. Let's leave it at that. It's very over rated, so that's why I waited until all the hype died down so I could see it without people screaming at me. I really do want to see it in person, thought the ticket prices are WAY TOO HIGH. Last time I checked, it was around 400 dollars? Like- huh?? Thats VERY overpriced. I think it's just that people have different music tastes, but I agree with most/all of your points! Also, I love how soft your art is! Very nice to look at :D (P.S., I also cringe hard when I see Lin's lipbiting photo like AAAA-)
