I started learning English when I was 24, back in 2004. I read books with my friend, he is 91 now, that way I could practice my pronunciation. He introduced me to English Literature. We read Aztec and Aztec Autumn and we both liked the books . I also read Aztec in Spanish. I'm from Chiapas Mexico, at school we studied the Aztec pantheon and all the gods so I'm very familiar with what Jennings says in is books. I come from a Mayan area. Growing up I found so many pieces and figurines of clay in a creek that run through the ranch we were working in, I was 8, we lived there 5 years. My father also found and axe stone and something that looked like a danger made out of obsidian, obsidian was everywhere. Many pieces came up after we plowed the earth to plant corn or something else. Unfortunately all the clay figurines and the obsidian were given to some other people. Unfortunately we did not know the treasure we had. Aztec is also one of my favorites together with Don Quijote De La Mancha. I named my daughter Zyanya, she'll be 2 next month, after finding the name in the Aztec book. I love going to my local library for a good bargain book . I remember being there not long ago, I usually go for the Spanish books, but this time I did not find anything so I started checking the books in English and there it was another book of Jennings, The Journeyer, well preserved and I just paid one dollar. After I left the library I decided to go to goodwill, 10 minutes away form the library. As soon as I get to Goodwill I walked toward the book shelves and there, like waiting for , was another book of Jennings Aztec Blood. I looked around to see if it was a joke I even called another friend and asked him if he was following me. I could not believe it. I thought: maybe the same god that helped me find the clay figurines when I was barefooted running in the fields when I was 8 is helping me again, is giving me another chance. That's me just being silly. Anyway that's how I found about Jennings and came to love his books. I still can believe he only finished high school.

Just started reading spangle (even tho ive read both journeyer and raptor), and theyve just got into Italy and met autumn. I get what you mean about jennings call backs to earlier in the book and the ability to put youninto the story and im excited to keep reading. Im a little suprised by your rating (if only because so many other gary jennings readers have saidnuts their favorite) butnglad u enjoyed overall ❤

I read this book years ago. It is my favorite book ever! I almost cried when the book was over! I would just open the book wherever and read from there! There was not a single part of the book that wasn’t fantastic! So well written and historically accurate. It’s been a few years since I’ve read it. Will be reading it again soon!

Thanks for the refresher. I'm about to start the 2nd book. I read Aztec while doing night watches on my navy ship, lol. Aztec is the "gateway" novel for non-fiction guys... and not only that. I just learned the guy was born 3 hours away from where I was born/live😅😅😅. Cheers! And I'm a memoirist about to launch my 2 books. So I know book two will be crazy, it's deeply intriguing so far. But man... Great review, I had forgotten much about it. Gotta buy another book 1 copy. Okay, I think I'm done, lol.

Dude, you need to check out RAPTOR also by Gary Jennings! I bought a copy about 25 years ago, haven't been able to find another copy. I thought it interesting that everything you said about AZTEC is also true about RAPTOR. It takes place about 1000 years ago and takes you from Eastern Europe to all these crazy places. If you find it, I'd love to hear what you think. And what's most interesting is the person whose point of view it's from! You are going to love this one!🎉

Glad to see this video. Aztec is an amazing and awe-inspiring book. So entertaining and witty. Also incredibly tragic. Descriptive enough and still weeded with so much story. This book was an emotional one for me to finish. It was definitely long. The characters make it worthwhile though with a great plot. Bottom line is that it gives us a first hand glimpse into the spanish conquests as it met with an amazing civilization and ultimately destroyed it. That in and of itself is epic. However, there is so much that garry jenkins has his character do. This book is like james Cameron titanic but for books. On a side note. One thing that really threw me off was Mixtlis relationship with Bea. It was so obvious she loved him and he treated her so horribly for his own insecurities. This behavior coming from a character who has been with so many women made little sense to me and was sad to see bea get hurt repeatedly by Mixtli. At the end the character realizes that she really loved him, but i thought it was just too late. I think Miztli and Bea, after everything they went through, deserved a happy ending.

I went to the Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City a few weeks ago --- so many of the artefacts I saw there turn up in one way or another in Aztec, Jennings certainly did his research. I think you're right, some shocking scenes and events --- but not unrealistic.

You echo so exactly how I feel about this book!!! It had the same effect on me. With my first trip to visit Mexico City, I knew EXACTLY where I was as we moved around the city. As a historian, I was literally "enraptured" with the details presented in this story. (Do you remember him describing the feathered flags flying above the merchants' houses? As they flapped in the wind, they made no sound!!!!!) I tried The Journeyer and Raptor but just wasn't as entralled by them. The author, Gary Jennings, died in 1999 so some of the books were not totally written by him, but 'co-authored'. Any time I tell stories of my trips to Mexico City, I speak about this book!!! Thanks for your review....and sharing your enthusiasm for my favorite book as well!

Oh yeah Raptor is an enveloping tale!

Dude! Aztec Blood is insane too. Aztec Rage is incredible. Aztec Fire is great. The 2012 Codex is garbage. The Journeyer is epic and crazy. Spangle is a story you feel could be true. The main theme in all of the stories is that you become attached to the main characters, in such a way, that you feel their victories and their defeats. Gary Jennings is the best. RIP I’m looking forward to more reviews.
