Yeltsin wasn't Gorbachev's successor on an equitable level. Firstly he sold out the newly democratic USSR. The result was a commonwealth of autocratic states who shared power and the wealth with organized crime, not the people. Yeltsin was an alcoholic trainwreck of a leader who ruined the country. The republics descended into wars with each other. Now they are proxy wars between the West and China.

I honestly think the Jeffrey Dahmer shock that summer of 1991 and the leadup to his February 1992 conviction sucked a lot of attention away from the news of this. I'm still shocked that we really weren't taught much about the Cold War growing up. It literally was everything!!! Korea, Vietnam, the Cuban Missile Crisis. There just wasn't much understanding or enough emphasis put on exactly what it was. I understand it now, but it sure wasn't explained well in school.
