Rare Critter at Work: Model 40 Burro Rebuilds a Crossing
In the summer of 2020 I had the opportunity to see a Model 40 Burro Crane, one of the last of its kind, replacing a railroad crossing in Barrington IL.
Filmed over two weeks, you’ll see an incredibly rare look at an antique Burro Crane in the hands of an expert operator; lifting concrete panels and chunks of roadway, traveling at speed, and shoving with all its might against two to three train cars.

Gyralight in the Night
Просмотров 10 тыс.4 года назад
Filmed on March 22, 2020 When Mars Lights were first invented in the 1930's to make an approaching train more visible, they were said to look like a light from Mars. To me they still hold that same sense of fascination and wonder. I've been wanting to film a video like this for years. When I was a young kid, I saw a scene similar to what you see between 5:04 and 5:24 in the video, with the swir...
Straining Grand Trunk Local Train (2018)
Просмотров 2,6 тыс.4 года назад
Filmed on April 4, 2018 These local trains are a rare and exciting catch among the many larger mainline freight trains that CN runs on this line. This is the longest local yet at 11 cars, and you can hear this old Grand Trunk GP38-2 straining with the load as it accelerates from a dead stop, northbound at the Barrington diamond. (This is the old EJ&E line). I could hear the sound of the engine ...
Loaded Flat Rack Container (2018)
Просмотров 6 тыс.4 года назад
Filmed on March 5, 2018 A Stack Train of the Future! When I first saw one of these back in 2016, I was told it was called a “Flat Rack” container. Here’s one with a load! (3:10).These are used for loads that must be lowered in from the top or from the side and can’t be loaded from the end, where the doors are on a standard container. This is the intermodal industry modernizing and expanding bey...
Ghostly Metra Horn (2018)
Просмотров 9 тыс.4 года назад
Filmed on February 9, 2018 On the evening of February 8, a winter storm dumped almost a foot of snow overnight. That morning I got up early and went out in the cold to film some trains in the fresh, blowing snow. It seems the horn on cabcar # 8573 must have gotten some snow in it because it sounded just like a steam whistle. Turn up the volume just after the first train passes. Despite the titl...
Crossing Malfunction: Train on the Diamond (2017)
Просмотров 1,9 тыс.4 года назад
Filmed on December 9, 2017 It was the first snow of the season. We'd had a bit of a warm fall, but on December 9, the temperature finally plunged below freezing and the first snow fell. I was driving along when the gates went down, and decided to pull over and film the train. By the time I stopped the car and started the camera rolling, the train should have already come. I kept looking back an...
Lowboy and Other Neat Rolling Stock (2017)
Просмотров 1,7 тыс.4 года назад
Filmed on October 30, 2017 at 4:15pm Sometimes you just have to get excited. Look what came northbound through Barrington Illinois. I love mixed freights for exactly this reason. 1:52 "Lowboy" flatcar used to carry extra tall or heavy loads. Then: Some MOW (Maintenance of Way) flatcars with (very uneven) track on them, used to transport repair equipment. The last one has a folded-up ramp for lo...
Lone Local Loco (2017)
Просмотров 1,3 тыс.4 года назад
Filmed on October 30, 2017 at 8:20am In between the big mainline freights, sometimes around 2 miles long, it's always a rare and funny sight to see these local trains. They travel the route of the old EJ&E, a C shape around Chicago. The Elgin Joliet & Eastern Railroad ran only local trains on this line, only a few times a week, serving some industries north of the city. In 2009 the EJ&E was bou...
Missing CN Logo (2017)
Просмотров 1,8 тыс.4 года назад
Filmed October 2017 The logo seems to have disappeared from the side of this engine (CN 2020). What's up with that? Where did it go? I found some pictures of this engine on railpictures.net, some taken not too long before this video, and they show "CN" on the side, as it should be. But maybe that was the other side? One possibility is it's being sold to another railroad, but then why leave the ...
Orange Intermodal Structure (2017)
Просмотров 1 тыс.4 года назад
Filmed August 2017 After seeing many, many "standard" shipping containers with sides, ends, and a roof, I was surprised to see this come southbound through Barrington Illinois. I'm curious what this carries. It has to be something long and narrow, but small at one end and larger at the other. Any ideas? Has anyone seen this with a load? Also on this train is an old-style 5 pack from before stac...
Empty Sand Train Flies Off the Starting Line (2017)

Filmed on July 26, 2019 The 4-8-8-4 Big Boy is the largest steam engine ever built. Union Pacific Railroad recently spent two and a half years rebuilding and restoring 4014, so now one of them is operational! Immediately following restoration, it travelled to Utah to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the first transcontinental railroad's completion. Shortly afterward it went on a trip all acro...
Fixing a Broken Gate
Просмотров 90 тыс.5 лет назад
Filmed on July 25, 2019 Three people work to fix a broken gate at the Route 59 crossing in Barrington Illinois. Quite interesting and not something you see everyday. This all took place during morning rush hour (albeit towards the end) which adds a level of urgency to the task. Metra trains are coming by fairly frequently, and a line of traffic is trying to get across the track. I happened to h...

Filmed on July 26, 2019 The 4-8-8-4 "Big Boy" is the largest steam engine ever built. Now that number 4014 has been restored, one of them is operational. As a side note, the Metra announcement near the beginning of the video is the funniest I've heard. I...
The ArroWedge Container
Просмотров 8 тыс.6 лет назад
Footage From Summer 2017 The Union Pacific Railroad has been experimenting with a new way to save fuel: replacing the first stack container of a stack train with a special one that has a sloped front. This will in theory make the train more aerodynamic. The first time I saw one and found out what it was, it didn't seem to make sense. What about all those gaps between the cars, especially the pi...

What work it takes to keep the railroad running!! The use of different methods, materials and equipment to justify having a great network of rails to keep everything moving! It is a fact that the Union Pacific is Building America! You are amazing, love the UNION PACIFIC RAILROAD!!!!

Let me tell ya, when I worked the railroad, we did it by hand. There we're no machine to pull out or put in, we used our hands with body strength. But I'm glad they got machine to do it We used to see how many times one can strike a spike into the plate tie. Usually it took 3 hits. Some ties were softer and nail it twice into. It was competition between us . But usually just doing it could take 4 or 5 hits into. We made a game outta it, while working, and getting paid ...

Rules of thumb: put the camera on a tripod and leave it there! And take your finger off the zoom button! Good grief, I miss the days when people actually knew how to properly shoot train videos…..before the advent of camera phones.

I grew up in Dolton from 1970-1987. The big railroad yards were two blocks south of where I lived, the tracks with the cars with white hot slag coming from the steel mills was about 5 blocks east and the Chicago city limits were 4 blocks north.

It's been rebuilt. Note the 1960s cab/low nose and more modern roof fans. Not original in any sense. The Canadian National was formed in the 1920s as a merger of the Canadian Northern and Grand Trunk as a Crown Corporation owned by the Canadian gov't, so the CN did not purchase the GT, It got married.
