Let me tell ya, when I worked the railroad, we did it by hand. There we're no machine to pull out or put in, we used our hands with body strength. But I'm glad they got machine to do it We used to see how many times one can strike a spike into the plate tie. Usually it took 3 hits. Some ties were softer and nail it twice into. It was competition between us . But usually just doing it could take 4 or 5 hits into. We made a game outta it, while working, and getting paid ...

Rules of thumb: put the camera on a tripod and leave it there! And take your finger off the zoom button! Good grief, I miss the days when people actually knew how to properly shoot train videos…..before the advent of camera phones.

I love these. I just bought 13 roadrailers from Swift, BNSF Ice Cold Express, and Triple Crown (and one unpainted one)

That's a rebuilt engine-- a GPR9-- with a 645 engine.

I grew up in Dolton from 1970-1987. The big railroad yards were two blocks south of where I lived, the tracks with the cars with white hot slag coming from the steel mills was about 5 blocks east and the Chicago city limits were 4 blocks north.

These things, the ROAD-RAILER,are on their way out, for whatever reason. They were pretty damn neat to see!

Nice video and a good reference for someone like me who is thinking of visiting the area.

lava train, those capped ones sparkle, they are so hot, amazing had no idea that the bottles are made of metal that has a higher melting point, which I did not know there were metals that need to be more than 3000 degrees to melt, wow.

It would be interesting to see what the machine operators see when they are doing their operations on the tracks.

Very informative, excellent camera, clear annotions - Thank you! All that gear for about what, 1/4 mile of track? Yikes! Tho I guess 1/4 mi or 40 miles just means more/less days & diesel.

They need to start putting some dangerous chemicals in those safety tanks to make it more realistic.

It's been rebuilt. Note the 1960s cab/low nose and more modern roof fans. Not original in any sense. The Canadian National was formed in the 1920s as a merger of the Canadian Northern and Grand Trunk as a Crown Corporation owned by the Canadian gov't, so the CN did not purchase the GT, It got married.

These were one of the most unstable consists of all time due to the lack of structural integrity of the trailers. They were never designed to be hauled like this.
