Great video
Thanks Craig Cheers Denis
What kind of stone guard have you got? The one before ya got the stomper?? Ps nice vid. Thanks👍
Hi Brad, I had the standard mesh guard that sat on the draw bar with mud flaps hanging off it. The van was still being peppered on the rough stuff. With the Stone Stomper there's pretty much 0 damage now.
Great uploads, mate. Informative and good fun.
That thing is a weapon!
You know you can detach the cable from the dish itself for easy pass through on Small holes? You’re passing through using the wrong end.
Yeah sure do but I found it to be a pain in the @ss to feed the entire length from the inside everytime 👍
Dennis - a great video ! Thanks for your expert advice💕
Another bloody awesome video!!!! It's now 3am and i should be in hed, but found your channel and loving it!!! Thanks so much for such thorough and easy to follow videos!!! We've been quoted $460 to get our van serviced before we head off on our Lap. Im now thinking that I might watch this anotjer 10 times or ao, take some notes, put my big girl panties on and have a crack myself! What bearings do you advise using? I know zilch about bearings!!!
G'day Charlie, thanks for your awesome message. I would 100% recommend only the best wheel bearings you can find (something like Timken). Ask your local bearing shop for the best they have as it's a smart investment 🙂 I just replaced all mine and i shot a video that i still have to edit and post. Keep an eye out. Cheers
Great video, thank you!! I am about to order a Stone Stomper, to go with my 2018 FX4. I was planning to get the mount that clamps around the hitch, but might actually go the same route you have now, for under my DO35. I noted in the video that you have the FoMoCo towbar and tongue combo, and it also rattles, as did mine. I was advised to get an anti-rattle clamp or a shim set, to correct the infamous slop in the Ford Factory receiver. I opted for the clamp, as it can just be loosened and stay on the tongue shank when I remove it. I got mine from a trailer place in Bundaberg, when I travelled from Toowoomba to Calliope to have my poorly installed suspension fixed by a mate who is one of the R and D guys for the manufacturer. Below is some links for the 2 products, both of which can be found locally to you in Ipswich (I also spied the Bremer Ford plate surround 😂). Removing the slop in the hitch receiver prevents the stretching of the receiver over time, that the factory receiver is unfortunately known for ☹️ This will help reduce/eliminate excess movement that can contribute to porpoising between the van and car. trailerspartsandrepairs.com.au/product/mister-hitches-anti-rattle-shim-kit/ www.roofracksgalore.com.au/mister-hitches-anti-rattle-hitch-bracket-suits-hollow-and-solid-shanks-mharhb-mharhb Happy vanning!
Great feedback Charlie and i'll check out the links. I'm really happy with the mount under the DO35 and works perfect for my setup. My van has a fair bit of ball weight and tends to sit nicely most of the the time (except on a real bumpy track) Cheers
Hey mate, just wanted to say that was a really great video, heaps of detail to help me do my van bearings
Hey Jason, thanks for your kind words. I just shot another video on the whole bearing and cup replacement process as well. I just have to get around editing and uploading but will be after we do our upcoming desert trip. If you’re subscribed you’ll get a message when it’s up Cheers Denis
man your grip strength is god level cutting that size split pin with the normal size sidecutters is crazy....unless they are made of a softer metal than what im used to. Thanks for the tutorial
Haha, God level - love it 🙂
Hi mate great video just a couple of questions with the brake adjustment once the wheel stops rotating how many turns do you normally go to loosen off and should you get one whee rotation once adjusted? Also what spray did you use to line up the components matey
Hey Adam, I just back off the brake adjuster so the wheel spins freely. It's ok to have a little resistance but not too much. Sorry mate but can you elaborate on your spray questions?
@@vanontheback4419I think he means the aerosol spray you used? I'd like to know too please 👌🏻
Great video Dennis - much appreciated!
My knob better not fall off lol
😂😂😂
Wonderful video Sherri. You are an inspiration to other single Explorer owners. 👍😀
Hey mate was that price a promotional offer or full price? cheers
Great video thanks so much
@@rtarrant1 thanks Robert, glad you enjoyed. Cheers Denis
Wont help with legalities for the rear axle load rating, but definately make it tow better..
@@Retiredroamers yeah every kg makes a difference. I keep the canopy as empty as possible and no fuel Jerry’s or water over rear axle. I move gear from the van to canopy for trips without the van and is a bit of a pain (can’t afford a bigger tow rig yet 😁)
If im dealing with potholes and corrugated tracks would a lift be of any benefit? Not looking for any hardcore 4x4 tracks. Ill be looking at getting front bar but keeping fairly stock and will be towing a van with about 320 tbw.
Great uploads, mate.
Hey guys, just wondering what your total length from hitch to spare wheel and what is your total caravan weight full of water? Waiting for your next episode to drop, luv them
Hi Justin, our van is 8.5m front to back. Regarding weight, i;ve been very weight conscious and only take what we need. We try and pack light gear right down to cups, plates etc. Fully loaded with 200L of water we are around 3150kgs but i only take 1 tank of water normally.
Great informative video. cheers
Great video. I've been considering ETB canopies as well, so appreciate the info 👍
Thanks Darren, i'm very happy with the canopy so far. We will be doing the big test in Sep and heading across the Simpson Desert, Strezlecki, Oodnadatta and Birdsville Tracks. I'll do another update after but I'm very confident all will be great
Mate, thanks for sharing this. You're a legend!
Great video mate
Doesn't get any clearer than that. Great job with no faff.
'promo sm' 🤔
Any idea what the Bunnings plate with the membrane is called? Tried the bins today to no avail. Cheers.
Hey, this is what i used -DETA White Brush Wall Cover Plate, model no. 6519B
@@vanontheback4419 thanks heaps! Appreciate it. Cheers.
Oooooh I like the look of the $10 doovalackey 🤔😆
$10.40 to be exact :-). DETA White Brush Wall Cover Plate, model no. 6519B
thanks for taking the time to add this one !!!
My pleasure!
G'day How much did you cut off the U bolt and did you have to do it on both sides?
Hey Geoff, apologies for the late reply. If i recall correctly i lined everything up and took measurements from the bottom of the u bolt before i cut. Sorry but cant remember the actual measurement.
Thank you so much .. your explanation of everything was so helpful for this first time caravan owner at 67 years young .. Bit nervous getting out there… cheers
Just do it Benny, you only live once mate :-)
The backing plate has keyhole shaped slots that the unit fits into and slides down to alight the final two mounting screws. Which I cannot get to slide once the backing plate is screwed into the wall.
Did you back off the screws a bit to allow for a little movement in case the screws weren't aligned perfectly?
@@vanontheback4419 No, and thanks for the tip, obvious now you mention it.
You make hard work of it.
Which bit?
Great vid. Just curious what you do with the dust bushes. Thanks.
Hi Phil, which dust bushes are you referring to?
Thanks Dennis. A very comprehensive video of all the preventative maintenance steps we should be doing more often than not. Really glad you showed the handbrake adjustment screw mechanism whilst the drum assembly was removed. Makes it a lot easier to understand what you're doing when adjusting it when it's been reassembled. I guess the only thing better than packing bearings by hand is refilling a grease gun! 🙂
Thanks Anthony. It’s amazing how much difference a brake adjustment makes, not to mention the safety benefits and reduced workload on the tow vehicle.
Should've used brake cleaner or hot water to clean shoes and not air blower
I know Robert, it comes from my mechanical days back in the 80's and I should have learnt from then.... There was asbestos in the brake components and we had no idea of the implications.
@@vanontheback4419 I worked with a guy who instead of using hot water to pour over battery terminals to clean the acid he used the air blower, let's just say we all went running and he thought he wasn't doing anything wrong lol
@@robertstojcevski1098 imagine that smacking you in the eyes. OUCH
@@vanontheback4419 tell me bout it lol
How do you stop water getting into the valves at water crossings
Hi Jason, the valves are sealed and have dust caps so no water can get in.
@@vanontheback4419 thanks, I wondered about that
Great vid mate ... cheers👌 what do you use to protect your pvc pipework underneath? Gotta do the same on my van....
Hi Mate, I used foam insulations that tradies use on water pipes. I've also seen pool noodles being used as well. Good idea if you want to colour code your van :-)
I used conveyer belt rubber on my PVC pipes- about 2-3mm thick and cut into sections and zip tied on. I found out the hard way that if you have ANY gaps, rocks will fins them.... Sourced from a mob called Belt Rubber Mart in Toowoomba. More hard wearing than the foam insulation or pool noodles, which I initially used. I had rocks punch through on the way to Birdsville 3yrs ago, so replaced before our second trip out there. For the John Guest water pipes and all electrical wiring, split conduit is great. I add zip ties as insurance.
For future reference, there is a great free camp on the way to the dinosaur museum on the left only 5-10 from Winton.
Thanks Darren :-)
Another boring channel
Thanks legend
Where's your channel M8?
Best video I've seen on this. Great presentation. I just got our new (used) van service by a professional. Mobile service and he was only at our place for 45min. Reckons he did all the bearings and brake adjustments. $570. Not bad rates for a brain surgeon. Many years ago I used to do my own on all my old trailers and caravan and will go back to doing it so great to get tips from you.
Thanks Damian. Mmmmmm 45 minutes would hardly cover the time for a basic inspection let alone a complete service imo. I always carry spare bearings and seals when travelling as well as all all the tools for any situation. Cheers Denis
What a beautiful part of the country!
It certainly is and we will be back there
Great video, Air bag guys should follow you, Why have 2 air valves? If 1 leaks won"t car be lop sided? I remember in young days with pump up shockers on the HR there was only 1 valve for even lift, My semi trailer air bags only have 1 auto adjuster controlling all air bags for same equal ride height and same pressure. Your thoughts?
Hey Bullbar, my understanding is that if only 1 valve is fitted then the air will flow from one to the other which may result in a "tipping" effect. ie going around a corner or over rough terrain, the air from the pressurised side will move to less pressurised side and create more lift which is not ideal. Maybe your truck has some type of valve to stop this happening. That's my understanding but have been wrong before haha
Good vid mate. I lived in Ravens hoe for a few years when my wife got transferred to teach up there
Thanks Dicko, we’ll spend more time up there exploring next time
Great video guys good to see you out and about again
Thanks Lyndon, how’s your photography journey going? You are creating some great content mate.
Great info. Have you ever considered fitting a Oz Glide hitch? They are a bit pricey, but would be interested in your thoughts. Cheers
Hey Michael, i haven't used one but i will definitely do some research
Love the back yard
Thank you!!!
Great video mate. Thanks. Regarding the Fire Extinguisher, just give them a shake each time as well as the powder settles on one side and if left can cause it not to work 👍
Thanks @1000adstar I’ll definitely be doing that and thanks for the tip 👍
Thanks for this tip too!
Fantastic video I'm heading up sept 2024 great inspiration. 😊
Well done, worth watching.
Is it worth the drive out there … doesn’t look much different to any other part of the cape York which is easier to access
It sure is worth the drive. Great place to hang out for a few days or so.
