How and why ?
Not really. Tribalism is a very real component of human existence because it is directly linked to survival. We don't have sharp claws or long fangs to defend ourselves and we aren't fast enough to outrun any major predator. An individual human being is prey. But a group of humans working cooperatively are the deadliest predators the planet has ever seen. Belonging to a group means the difference between life and death. Those who do not belong to our group are a potential threat to our access to resources. So we, as a species, have always been sensitive to "others." In times of hardship when there is little to go around, we take care of our own first because the survival of my group is directly tied to my survival as an individual. Is all that "racist," or is it just human instinct? If I tell you I don't have anything to share with you because you are not a part of my group, you may feel I am being "racist" yet my motivations have nothing to do with your race. They have to do with the fact you aren't a member of my group and therefor are not a priority. "Racism" is in the eye of the beholder, isn't it? You can call someone "a racist" all you like, but that doesn't make you right. It usually means you are just clueless and have no idea what is really going on.
