    Hey- few questions for you all. Love the vids. 1) do you have a weed barrier underneath the mulch you have down for the walking areas? 2) do you all have a tractor or did you build the beds out by hand? 3) did you design the garden from the first or did you just have a few beds and it morphed into this long term? 4) how do you get your jalapeno plants so big? I have two and they haven’t exceeded 2ft tall. Do you leave the roots in and just cut back the stalk? I’ve replanted 6in plants each year 5) do you start everything from seeds? So far I haven’t ventured into starting from seeds but it seems like the most economical approach?

    • @homeright
      @homeright 12 дней назад

      Thanks so much for watching. 1- We put a layer of cardboard down beneath the mulch. We get a few weeds, but very little. The mulch thickness was about 5 inches to start, and then we just top dress each year. 2- Wish we had a tractor. Everything done by hand and pushing wheel barrels. 3- Garden design is probably our biggest flaw. At first we just wanted a small garden and when we planned it out late fall, the sun was best in the first area we made, which was 4 raised beds. Our love for gardening and desire for fruit trees, berries, etc created the expansion. We moved fence lines, water lines, and beds. A lot more work than if I had a solid plan, but enjoying the journey. Even this year, we will be replacing wood beds with metal ones and adding more fruit trees. 4- Our jalapeno's are new plants from seed each year. 5- 99% of our plants are from seed. Initial investment for seed trays, lights and racks were higher than buying plants from the nursery, but we now save a ton starting from seed. Also starting from seed allows us to buy different varieties and more disease resistant plants that work better in our growing zone. Thanks again for watching and hope these answers were of help

      @@homeright Awesome, thanks for all the responses! I just have 4 raised beds (here in atlanta) that i planted this past late-spring. it was my first time gardening, and given my preference for fruit over veggies, i mainly tried to grow easy fruit. that is actually how i found your channel - from the navaho blackberry video. I got that from my nursery and it yielded me a few cups of blue berries this first year. Very cool to hear about the seeds, i think that i will dive into that this year. i am not in a pinch for money so its no problem for me to buy plants at the store, but i think seeds would just make more sense and are the natural next step for me here. I went through your video and saw you have quite a few, so i will spend time watching those. Last question: Do you have a preferred place you buy seeds from? and how have you all learned all your garden knowledge? books or just the internet?

    • @homeright
      @homeright 12 дней назад

      Seeds are from a variety of places, pending on what were looking for. Some main suppliers are Hoss, jung seed, and true leaf for specific varieties. Basic ones are purchased at either seed geeks or at big box stores. We also harvest seeds from some of the flowers and vegetables we grow to use the following year. We are constantly learning as we go. Many things were trial and error in the beginning, but we have found what works for us in our environment. The internet, mostly youtube, has been a great source for us. Feel free to reach out to us with any further questions.

    Thanks for doing this. The Feit lights in Canada are $60, in comparison you can get 4 4ft T8 LEDs for the same price. $60 is too much for a 19w light that can barely light up an area the same size of its physical footprint.

    Those don't even look ripe. Wouldn't they be sweeter raisins if you let them ripen more? I've my harvested cherries sitting in a box in a cool space and they get sweeter every day.

    • @homeright
      @homeright Месяц назад

      I agree some are more ripe than others. We keep them on the counter and over the course of a week some are sweeter than others. We will batch dehydrate once the bowl is full. Pending the season, that can be anywhere from 2 days to over a week. As raisins, we find all levels of ripeness create a very sweet taste, but when eating them fresh, there is a huge difference in the taste between fully ripe and still slightly green. Thanks so much for watching

    Many thanks for the demo! Do you adjust the shelf maximum temperature or times when doing basil? tip: Basils turn black from an enzyme. To preserve color when adding to recipes, add the dried/freeze dried basil to very hot, simmering sauces, etc. Heat denatures the enzymes,

    • @homeright
      @homeright Месяц назад

      Hi, thanks for sharing the tip. We do not need to adjust the temperature or times in the freeze dryer. Before we load the trays of basil, the freeze dryer takes 15 minutes to start the freezing process in the chamber, and then we load the trays with the fresh basil. Our basil has never turned black from using the freeze dryer. The basil has always maintained a nice color, it maintains a better color then when we used a dehydrator. We have experienced the basil turning black when we make our basil tea, if you do not cover the basil completely with the hot water (immediately)...those leaves turn black.

    Hello. New subscriber here enjoying your channel. I use the Barinna lights to start my seeds. I continually have a problem with my brassicas. They all seem to sprout really well but later on all slowly die. Not a soil or watering issue. The only thing left are the lights. Could it be that my lights are too close to the new seedlings? Discouraged. Thank you for feedback and recommendations.

    • @homeright
      @homeright 2 месяца назад

      Thanks so much for watching and subscribing. Greatly appreciated. Our struggle with brassicas is that we have to allow about 2-3 more weeks of indoor growth over what the seed packets suggest. We keep our lights about 2-3 inches away from the plants ( closer to 2" when they first start to keep them from getting leggy). These lights are on for about 12-14 hours/day. Since you have eliminated it being a soil or water issue, my only other thought would be temperature being too warm. Also not sure what your humidity levels are. Ours fluctuate pending the season, but typically around 45%. Final thought might be to add a small fan to the young plants just to move air around.

    So ive been pciking them when the husks are brownish but the fruits themsevles are still green, only a hit of yellow/orange. They arent ripe ajd i dokt know why. Maybe they need watered more?

    • @homeright
      @homeright 2 месяца назад

      We have had that happen as well. I usually wait for them to drop instead of picking, but we also leave the ground cherries on the counter in their husks for about a week. Not all will ripen, but that does help. Watering and fertilizer could be an issue as these seem to be our first plants that show signs of stress in our garden during dry spells and high heat. These plants typically receive twice as much water versus our other tomato plants. Thanks so much for watching

    That stuff is pretty good and I've used it a punch. I like seven dust for white flies, it works plus kills most insects. My lizards and I have hundreds in my garden do most of the heavy lifting. Funny thing was I watched your first video went right out into my garden and what do you know...white flies on my squash plants...lol timing is everything. Best of luck with your channel. Fyi my biggest battle ROOT KNOT NEMATODES.....little bastards killed most of my in ground tomatoes and there is no easy or quick fix.... its alway going to by something. They even hurt my fig tree. Oh well what dosnt kill you makes you a Gardener.

      we have not had to deal with the nematodes yet, but would not be surprised to see it in our future. Our goal is to continue to learn what it is we can do now to prevent pests and problems in the future. As frustrating as day to day gardening can be, we absolutely love it. Thanks so much for watching

      @@homeright well if you ever have a plant that looks ok maybe even great and then starts to look wilted and no matter what you do it continues to die . So when you pull the plant up and see what looks like rope knots or just dieing roots you got them. They can easily be transferred threw out your garden if not very careful. Move one pole from one area to another without cleaning it off ....done. 5 years of gardening and never heard of them until this year. Now I'm in full salvation mode...trying to save what I can . Frustrating....I'm doing it all alone and pushing that positive button is a daily...lol

    May I ask what are you using to spray the white flies, and when are you spraying the white flies?

    • @homeright
      @homeright 3 месяца назад

      I have tried a few things. First was just neem oil, with little success. Next I did a combination of neem oil and dish soap ( 1.5 tablespoon of each) diluted in a one gallon sprayer with some luck. Over the past couple of days, I have used castile soap ( 1/4 cup diluted with water in one gallon sprayer). This seems to be the best solution for me so far and pleased with the results we are getting. We also use yellow sticky traps, which help. Thanks so much for watching

    Good video! Really nicely done! Just filled my first Vego Garden bed - I decide to cut out my grass & applied landscaping fabric ( DeWitt) , 2 years worth of cardboard , yard waste then good soil. A few more to fill. My soil is rock heaven- little ones, big ones, boulders & tree roots paradise-trees cut down over 20 years ago! You are sooo correct . This way of gardening is an investment- For me 3 years in the making!

      Thanks so much for watching and glad you liked the video. We have had a lot of success this year with our Vego Garden beds. In our area (zone 8a), we thought these metal raised beds would dry out faster than our traditional wood raised beds, but it has been the exact opposite. I feel that is partially due to the wood branches and deteriorating logs we placed at the bottom. We find the same success with all of our grow bags. We add about 1/2" of fine wood chips at the bottom of each bag. This way the bags don't dry out too fast. As we both agree, these are an investment, but we are very pleased with the results.

      From our experience, in NC, they do best between Oct-Apr when temps range on average from 45-75 and low humidity. I think they could do well in a greenhouse if you are able to control humidity. I also think they would work outside in your area if you covered them with plastic or frost cloth.
