EPCOT Norway Movie: As seen in the closed Maelstrom pavilion on the last day at Disney EPCOT Norway The final part of the Maelstrom ride at EPCOT was a movie about Norway. Iconic scenes from the Vikings to North Sea oil exploration, arts, technology and the lifestyle. Great music and cinematography made it a great finale to the ride and I'm sure it enticed many to visit Norway. The ride closed ...

Thanks for watching. This pavilion was a perfect example of intelligent entertainment that was what made the original EPCOT so good. Horizons was another example and our favorite. It was a great disappointment when they replaced that.

I remember there was some kind of display that had coiled copper pipes twisted together into a pillar and one pipe had cold water running through it and the other warm water. When you grabbed them with your hand the effect made your hand feel like it was either burning hot or freezing cold or even both at the same time.

You know, still to this day I can not figure out if the Wonders of Life Pavillion was a good attraction or a bad one. It was definitely memorable, I'll give it that, but just maybe not for the reasons Disney wanted. The Body Wars ride was obviously a highlight for being pretty much EPCOT'S only thrill ride. Man, that ride both fascinated me and freaked me out at the same time. Cranium Command was an interesting idea, but maybe not one of Disney's better shows. I never saw 'The Making of Me' show but I was curious to see what it was like. I was at the age where I knew where babies came from, but thought it would be awkward to watch something like that with my mother! The only other thing that stood out to me was the 'Room with a Scew' thing. That was fun. So despite having some memorable moments, I honestly don't think it's a big loss to the Disney Parks.

If you think about it, Body Wars was pretty much the main reason Wonders of Life had to close. When it opened it was ground breaking despite the fact that it was a super rough ride. However once Star Tours opened at Hollywood Studios, the inferior Body Wars really lost the ability to draw people to the pavilion. And other then the Cranium Command and Making of Me shows, there wasn't really anything else to do. One of my first memories of Disney was going to Epcot for the first time in 1989 when I was 6, I remember being super excited to ride Body Wars. When I got off I remember feeling sick and not so thrilled.

Body Wars reminds me of the episode of the Iron Man animated series from the 90s where Iron Man goes inside Hawkeye to repair his spinal injury. I wouldn't be surprised if the guy we go inside was played by the same guy who voiced Hawkeye.

I wish I could've seen this pavilion (darn parents, having me in 1999 instead of earlier), I absolutely love how it looks, reminds me of mall aesthetic from the 80s and 90s, which has this strange psychological connection to me, since my mom took me to the 2 local malls (one of which still looks remarkably similar to this) all the time when I was super young. That, plus growing up watching 70s-90s movies that my parents loved, puts this pavilion and its attractions in the same part of my mind as prehistoric earth, Vaporwave, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and 90s SEGA.

I have sorta the opposite problem: I _did_ get to see EPCOT in the early ‘80s…and to this day, it remains my favorite theme park experience…! but alas, it was so _early_ in the ‘80s that The Seas and The Wonders of Life pavilions hadn’t even opened yet - plus Spaceship Earth had been struck by lightning when we visited, and wasn’t operating for the day - so I never experienced those rides! But Journey into Imagination was great - my jaded 11-year-old self even happily and willingly got my picture taken with Dreamfinder and Figment! - the Energy pavilion remains the single most awe-inspiring ride I’ve ever been on, and after Kitchen Kabaret, to this day I can’t fix food without humming “veggie veggie, fruit fruit” to myself. I’m glad that version of EPCOT Center still lives on on RUclips at least. Maybe someday Disney will have a visionary CEO again who’ll return EPCOT to its original mission. Not everything has to be “synergies” and “vertical integration” and “product placement” - there’s a need in the world for a visionary, utopian theme park, which a restored EPCOT Center could once again fill.

    • @sambow3452

Sara McConnell the Wonders Of Life pavilion was all about teaching guests about the body. The focus on the whole pavilion wasn't just to eat healthy. There were parts in the pavilion that talked about eating healthy and exercising but they were there just there to help guests understand how eating healthy and exercising is beneficial to the body.

Back when Epcot opened, WDW had a healthy food initiative. There wasn't so much sugar and barely any alcohol being served. I remember the healthy restaurant that used to be in WOL. The ideas were misguided at the time (low fat), but it was still better than the stuff all over WDW now, such as boozy cookie shakes being served at snack bars on all the walkways.
